“A Happy Mom”

Description from Little Round Chick: We are a very patriotic family with many members who have been or are in the military. I just received a phone call from my son who is in the Navy. He called from Valparaiso, Chile. The old slogan "Join the Navy and see the World" has really been true for him. Seems like he has been every where except Europe.

Go Navy! My older brother is a (recently retired) Navy Commander. My mum’s family is almost entirely military (she had one cousin who was in Civil Service, but every other male relative of hers was or is a military officer, mostly Navy). One thing I’m teaching my daughters is that when they meet someone who is or was in the military, to say to them, “thank you for your service”. We’ve met vets from Vietnam who said, “no-one has ever said that to me before”. I think it’s an important gesture to practice-we thank your son for his service!

Great pick, Nancy! So wonderful what your son is doing — please tell him how grateful we are for his service!

Just curious — did you pick gems from Africa, Madagascar, and the Pacific because he’s been to those places?

What a lovely pick LRC for such a patriotic family. There a re not many in my family who have served in the military. I lost a cousin during the war and I had an uncle who was in the navy and I was in the army. My dad was not allowed to serve because he was flat footed. I tried to get my children interest6ed but they had too many other activities on the go and now they’re too old to join. BTW, Helen, I think you are doing a wonderful thing with your girls. I know it would be a very welcome gesture to a lot of vets. Thanks.

Helen, I think that’s a wonderful lesson you’re teaching your children. We need to appreciate what our military people have done/are doing for us to keep us free, even in peace times.

When I did the pick I was looking for colors and really didn’t pay attention to where they originated.

I’ll be sure to pass you thanks along to my son. Luckily he is not in a front line job. He works with maintenance and repair of aviation electronics.

LRC, when I worked in Civil Service at Grissom Air Base here in Indiana, I was the Administrative Assistant for the Deputy Commander of Maintenance. The aviation electronics section fell under his command. It was right across the hall from our offices and I got to tour their area a couple of times. It was fascinating! :D

Later when the base was restructured, the Colonel I worked for became the Support Group Commander and I transferred to that area as his Admin. Asst. I thought both areas were very interesting and I learned a lot. :D

This is a wonderful pick to salute our men and women in the armed forces. I believe that all military, both past and present, deserve our everlasting thanks for protecting all that we hold dear. I agree about thanking every vet you encounter. My husband was and “Army Brat”, my father served in the Navy, and my brother retired from the Air Force several years ago. Our whole family belongs to the American Legion, where we proudly serve our veterans, and raise funds to help them and their families. Even my young grandchildren (ages 8 & 4) pitch in whenever we have a veteran’s function! God Bless the USA!!!

Beautiful Pick, and great sentiment! :-)

We also have a tradition of military service in my family, esp. in WW II. We need to remember that “Freedom isn’t free!”

Thank you all for you kind words. I would expect nothing less from such a great group. I am sooooo glad I found this group.

Some years ago my husband and I decided we would see when the first of either of our families had served in the military. We discovered that between us we have had family involved in every major conflict starting with the Revolutionary War. The only exception is the Spanish American War.

Apparently we have been big flag wavers for a long time and proud of it.

Wow, LRC, that’s incredible! Hope your families fought on the same side in the Civil War. LOL ;-)

I’m not sure, Lynn. Probably they did.
