Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:OOOh, tough one! How old is she?
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:15 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:Tradition calls for white or ivory, classics she can wear for sweet 16, and her wedding day.
Rose pearls are very soft feminine & romantic.
The Brighter colors are for the young at heart, fresh & fun.
What is her personaliy?
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:22 pm #
KPJEWELS says:She is five and she is a very happy bubbly child. She is very friendly but also a little shy at times. When her and I are home alone she never stops talking or giggling. We always have a great day together.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:24 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:Softer colors would probably serve her well for a long time. The brights are great, but not necessarily personality suited?
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:25 pm #
KPJEWELS says:Sorry, I forgot to say thanks. I was thinking about the angel skin pink. She is a girly, girly. Loves dressing up to go out, especially when I take her to church. Everyone makes such a time over her.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:27 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:Oh, I think that would be very nice!
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:31 pm #
KPJEWELS says:I’ve never made a pearl set yet and am wondering if I should add something with the pearls. I have a SS clasp along with the pearls and ten thousand other beads. Gotta stop buying beads. That BGBM is addictive along with the fresh picks. he, he.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:The trick is sizing. I think the method we talked about earlier, where we string a certain amount and then end by crimping onto a jump ring would work well. End by attaching a toggle clasp, etc. Then the piece can be lengthened by addition of chain or a few jump rings, as she gets older. Also agree that white, or ivory are good choices for the long term use you are envisioning.
I gave a strand of pearls to each of my 2 great-nieces when they were about to graduate high school. I was pleased when they each chose to wear that gift for their special day.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:37 pm #
Happy Chick aka Harriet says:3K Chick, I think it is a good idea to put small crystals of smooth spacers between the pearls. Keep the spacer bead small, since you want to highlight the pearls. I often use 10 ought good quality beads in between. It keeps the design delicate for a small girl, and prevents the pearls from rubbing against each other, wearing off the nacre layer. Hope this helps.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:Correction: small crystals OR small spacers
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:41 pm #
KPJEWELS says:Wow, thanks Harriet. Beadfx has Miyuki and Delicas on sale this week if I can’t find crystals in my stash. Would they work?
On Jun 07, 2009 at 5:52 pm #
Happy Chick aka Harriet says:The delicas are what I often use, especially with small pearls. The scale just seems right to me. Have fun!
If you have Hobby Lobby, and need the delicas quickly, I have found nice ones there. I try to take a few pearls on a crimped strand, so they know it is my own stuff. Then I can hold them next to the beads in order to see if I like AB’s or clear ones, etc, with the pearls I am using. Some AB’s, especially, have a tint, like more pink or blue, etc, and I like to compare against the pearls for best look.
Some Michael’s carry these sizes, too.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:Forgot to say you are welcome, any time. I enjoy talking with you, and get in such a hurry to reply that I can forget my manners.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:Going to bead now. Bye ladies.

KPJEWELS says:Bye Harriet and thanks again.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 6:20 pm #
Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:3K, if I’m not too late, I agree with Harriet about the spacer beads. Delicas are very good quality, and come in so many colors.
Count my vote with the soft colors too. Angel pink is beautiful, and white or ivory would look great with it too.
I like to finish “adjustable” pieces with a lobster claw & chain, personally. There are many pretty lobster claws available now, and lots of decorative chain, too. I like the security & smaller size of the lc clasp.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 8:35 pm #
Happy Chick aka Harriet says:Good point about the lobster claw clasp, Lori. Just checked back in and saw your note.

Very easy to add an extender chain with the lc and I like to put a matching stone (pearl here) at the end of the ex.chain on a wrapped loop with one little delica at the bottom.. Looks pretty and dressy, altho’ it can be harder to fit a pearl on a head pin. If that’s a problem, just go with matching crystal bead instead. The lc is probably the most secure clasp to use for a child.
One more thing, and you probably know this, 3K, but check to be sure the lobster claw opens and closes easily before going to the trouble of attaching it. I used to tell my classes that, because, once in a while, there is a broken spring or something else wrong with the lc. OK?

KPJEWELS says:Gee, thanks all you chicks for the wonderful advice. I am going to try and make this set for her for Christmas since her birthday has already gone by. A million thanks everyone. Sure appreciate all the tips and advice.
On Jun 07, 2009 at 9:28 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:Good luck. I am sure it will be beautiful!
On Jun 07, 2009 at 9:30 pm #
KPJEWELS says:If I ever accomplish it, I will try to post a pic. But don’t wait on it. I could be six months getting it done. he,he.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:Nite ladies.
On Jun 08, 2009 at 1:40 am #
Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:What great advice! Everything I’ve thought to suggest has already been mentioned. You definitely don’t want pearls to rub against each other, so spacers are a must. The lobster clasp with an extender chain is a good idea, too. Like Harriet, I always add a small dangle to mine that matches the piece. I love the angel pink pearls, creamy white, or white for a young girl. Can’t wait to see the finished result, Evelyn! She’ll treasure it always!
On Jun 09, 2009 at 12:18 am #
Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:Harriet, thanks for adding on the extra tips! I have learned to check the clasp too, after making some that just don’t open & close too easily. And I’m glad you remembered the finishing touch, too! It does make a nice little addition, plus something to hang on to when putting it on!
3K, I won’t hold my breath! I’m like that too with “deadlines”!
On Jun 09, 2009 at 8:35 pm #
KPJEWELS says:Thanks Lynn and Lori. This is the greatest place to get advice and assistance when a problem occurs. Thanks again everybody.
On Jun 09, 2009 at 8:38 pm #
Happy Chick aka Harriet says:We are here for each other. Beaders are good people!
On Jun 09, 2009 at 9:10 pm #
KPJEWELS says:Well, I have never had anyone that I could talk to like I can the chicks. This is great for me because I don’t hear very well and it can get embarassing at times. Because of my hearing I don’t socialize much so this has been a great thing for me when I discoverd LB and the chicks.
