“Answer my question please!”

Description from Orchid Betty: I posted this question in my wire, but nobody seems to notice it. So I created this pick with my favorite stones maybe I have better luck this time.
Here is my question:
Are there any real differences between the various craft wires: Artistic Wire, Parawire, Zebra Wire, beadery craft wire and others? I like to know if there is difference in quality and durability between the different brands. And when they say permanent colored copper wire does that mean it is durable and not like plated wire that will come out with time. I’ll appreciate any help, I want a high quality craft wire and I’m confused between the brands and don’t know what to order.

There are differences. For me I can mostly tell by the way it bends. Some I try to bend and they won’t stay in shape. My personal preference is Zebra Wire…since it stays in shape once bent! You’ll just have to experiment to see which one you like best.

Nicole, I agree…everyone has their own favorite.
Betty, I will use almost anything I can get my hands on…but if I dont like the wire- it goes in my practice bin so when I want to try something i use the practice wire before i make it for real w/ the wire I like (can you follow that?)

There are differences. Find the one you like best for you purposes and stick with it. If I am not sure I will ask the shop owner if I can buy a scrap of wire from her say 1 -2 feet to get a feel if I like it. I like artistic wire which I use for crocheting necklaces. To be honest I have not had the oppertunity to try zebra wire yet. Sometimes it is a color choice.

I buy inexpensive copper wire from the hardware store to practice on and then once I feel I have mastered my project I move on to my chosen wire such as silver.

    Hope this helps.

Hello Betty! I’ve tried Artistic and craft wire. I was satisfied with the product. I’m not familiar with the others you mentioned. I like Dawn’s idea of buying small quantities to try out to see if you like it. Good luck to you on your wire search.

Thanks Little chick, Lorrie, Dawn and Martha that was helpful
I don’t have craft stores where I live and I need to order the wire online, I usually use sterling silver, but sometimes I need to do cheaper jewelry but not by compromising the quality, so I also would like to know about the permanency of color, because I don’t want to create something using silver colored wire then with time the cooper will appear destroying the design! thanks again for all your help!

I’ve not had color problems with the Zebra Wire! I’ve tried aluminum wire before and the color always chips off though :( !!!

Thank you for asking the question Betty! I’m interested in knowing the differences too.
I have tried Zebra Wire (only in copper) and I like it. I have also tried “Wrap-it” in copper and nickle silver. Not sure I like the nickle silver, the color is not as bright and clear as artistic wire.
Little Chick, have you tried it yet?
If you have, what do you think of it?

Thanks Mary for sharing! About “Wrap-it” does it stay in shape after bending or is it only for wrapping around other wire or stone?

I tried the beadery craft wire and I liked working with it but still don’t know the effect of time on it!

I’ve tried so many types of wire (including craft wire) but I keep going back to Zebra Wire…though it’s hard to get cause it’s almost always out of stock :( Wrap-it works as long as you make sure you “wrap it” really tight otherwise it usually isn’t secure… :D

Thank you Nicole for commenting on the Wrap-it. I wasn’t sure how to answer Betty’s question about using it for uses other than wrapping stones. I’m guessing that means Zebra Wire is a harder wire than Wrap-it. And yes, Zebra is almost always out of stock!!! :-(

Someone ordered a long necklace that you can wrap around your neck twice and I was out of the zebra wire…and of course it was out of stock!!! I decided to wait a bit to see if it would come back in stock soon…but it didn’t. Then I bought craft wire…had a hard time with the wire…got the necklace done…checked online and it was IN stock again!!!!!! I decided not to redo it though….

Yes…thank you ladies!! Like Betty, I have been confused too and didn’t want to use bad wire on expensive gems, But by the sounds of it, Zebra wire is by far the best…that’s probably why it’s out of stock a lot!! :-D
    Beautiful pick, Betty!!

Thanks!! I’ve been super confused as well! Unfortunately, I have to work in my limited price range. Checked my local hardware stores and all they had was braided copper wire, cased copper wire, and both regular, and electrical fencing wire :(

Oooooh, jewelry made with electrical fencing wire could be interesting, Ravin!!! LOL

Thanks you ladies, you make my choice easier! It seems that the winner is Zebra wire! Thanks again!
