“At the Buffalo Run”

Description from Science Chick Runs Sibes: With the aid station set up and ready for the trailrunners, the four volunteers stood in the predawn light telling "war stories" of Ultramarathons past--the moose that almost got Karl, the Black Bear and her yearling cubs lurking just beyond the firelight drawn by the smell of cooking bacon, the baby-cry sound of nearby mountain lions. But, this island didn't have any of THOSE animals. The first blush of the unrisen sun painted the clouds in the dark grey sky above the mountains to the west with pale rosy pink and the first vermillion streaks.

As one the volunteers turned to look at the beauty of dawn's early light. Then, they let out a collective gasp. Three huge black silhouettes moved on the nearby ridge line. What...? The shapes took on form. They were three buffalo. "Don't stare at them," said one. Another breathed, "They won't notice us will they?" Frozen motionless, the four watched as the three huge bulls sauntered past within 15 feet of the aid station.

When they were safely past, I said, "Guess they wanted to make sure their namesake race is well organized."

Yes, Dawn, its best to view buffalo from a distance. Two years ago when I ran the 25K distance at the Buffalo Run, another woman and I were together as we approached a big (20-foot) water puddle in the trail, herd of young bulls considered us a threat to their hydration. The only thing that saved us from a charge was that they decided to duke it out amongst themselves for rights to take us out. As they jousted, we moved into high gear and got out of sight around a bend.

Gayle I think they are so majestic. I love to watch them. Love to watch elephants and giraffe too but have only been able to observe them in a zoo setting! Good think they decided to joust among themselves, you girls could have looked like ground beef.

Your beads are as beautiful together as the colors in an ethnic rug. Just as your description of the buffalo siting with your Sibes is strong and beautiful!

Lynn, Bonnie and Sunny–thanks for appreciating the story and the pick. The scene and its colors have been cooking in my design book since the event. This FP was my way of playing with colors and stones. I think I’ve got the concept and am amassing the materials. Hopefully, I’ll have a piece completed for my Valentine’s weekend show.
