More About Boulder Opal

Precious opal consists of tiny, transparent spheres of hardened silica gel with water in the intervening spaces. Unless the silica spheres are precisely arranged and of the correct size, the color-play that is characteristic of precious opal cannot form -- making this material extremely rare. Boulder Opal is found in Queensland, Australia where thin veins of colorful precious opal forms in cracks and fissures within brown ironstone boulders.
