“Camera help? Please!”

Description from Mary S - Sweet Chick: Help! I think it's time for me to find a new camera.
We have a Sony Super Steadyshot, with all the bells and whistles but it drains batteries like crazy! I think there a mechanical problem with it. I can never get the lighting right with either.

Can you all please let me know what make and model of cameras you like best? I hope to hear lots of comments from you chickies. There are some awesome photographers here at LB!

Ohhhh, I love this! Definitely a fav. Have you tried using rechargeable batteries? They seem to last much longer. As for the lighting, I’ve found the jewelry photos come out best when taken outside out of the direct sun. I also have a camera with all the bells and whistles but accidentally found that my iPad camera does a better job with the detail needed for jewelry. Odd, I know.

Gorgeous pick Mary! The abalone looks so good with this mixture of elements. As for the camera. I use my iPhone. Like Gail I found taking them outside in the natural light works the best.

    Thank you Gail and Wanda!
Unfortunately, no iPad, no iPhone.(I’m old fashioned I guess. So…..I need a new camera. Rechargeable batteries didn’t last either. :-(
I’ve tried taking outdoor pics as you suggest (with all kinds of setting changes) but have had no luck.
I’ve been using a light box with this particular camera and it’s better but I’m still not happy with them.

Anyone else have a favorite camera they’d like to suggest?

Great pick, Mary! Sorry, can’t help with the camera- I’m still using my hubby’s old Canon and not very successfully at times…

Loving the pick, Mary, don’t trow your camera it has good optics, I have a very old one, it was the very first digital Leica it belonged to my late husband who was the photographer in my family, I’m still struggling with it, some days it works, others not so much, but light is everything :D

Hi Mary! Does your camera have rechargable batteries? Mine dose, but I just use regular ones. Cameras DO drain batteries quickly. I get maybe 32 shots with my HP Photosmart, which is ages old, and only 3 megapixels, I think. My phone has an 8 MP camera with Hi Def that I sometimes use. I don’t know what kind of cell phone you have, but if you have Verizon as your carrier, you can probably upgrade to a cool smartphone for free. Right now the Droid Razor M in blue is available for free, and it’s the phone I have. You can upload pics from the phone to your computer.

As always, I use http://www.befunky.com to edit all my photos.

    Hope this helps!

Oh! I forgot to mention that for me, it’s best to take my photos in the AM, in a slightly shaded area. Needs to be before 10AM, or the light’s too bright. You’ll have to find a spot around your house that works. Mine is on the west facing side.
And, I can adjust brightness and contrast at befunky.com.

    Mary,
If you’d rather have a camera than a phone upgrade or whatever, the Canon 16 mp Power Shot is a decent inexpensive point and shoot. My daughter has one and I have grabbed it on occasion. The thing you want to pay attention to when purchasing a replacement is the mp. The higher the better for detail work.

    Gail Layne says:

Oops! Wrong camera! DON’T get the Canon. The one that worked well was the Nikon Coolpix 16.1 mp. The other one was the one we returned!

WOW on the pick!! Cant camera help. I use my phone. I do have a digital camera…its a Pentax Optio W90….waterproof. I haven’t used it for any jewelry yet but it takes awesome photos of tiny bugs & flowers & waves.
