“Dawn Redwood”

Description from Smoky Rose: Metasequoia glyptostroboides...
how could I have forgotten her when talking about the last of the fall color. Not a native species, but still a fav. You don't see too many around - just ornamental specimen trees in this area. The arboretum I drive past every day has one visible from the road - and it appears to glow, in the right light.

Your pick certainly represents this tree well. That is one draw back to living in FL. the pine trees are tall and the deciduous trees mostly just turn brown fast and drop their leaves. They sometimes have a big chunck of mistletoe stuck in the top of them just shouting out green. The golden raintree is an exception. In the fall it gett tiny yellow flowers with millions of bees. Then just as the flowers drop it gets little lantern seed pods that are a pink-turning creamy brown. When the seed pods drop it spreads the little trees everywhere. Pretty but listed on the invasive plant list.

that IS a pretty tree, Faith! have not seen of those in years. The only one I know of in the area is on Temple University’s suburban campus, where I went to school – those little lanterns in the fall are pretty & give a delicate feel to the tree. Thank you!

it’s beautiful, Mystic – it’s a deciduous (leaf dropping) conifer (cone bearing)- quite unique. in the summer, from a distance, you might think it’s an ‘evergreen’, but up close you can see how fine and feathery the leaves are – rather than needle-like. Yeah, I’m a tree nerd. Thanks!
