“Decoration Day”

Description from OK Jacki: In the South (& Midwest), Memorial Day is still called "Decoration Day." Every year there is much prep and flurry to get things ready for this very important (and social) day of remembrance. When I was a little girl, I can remember, first we had Church under the arbor, then dinner (lunch) on the grounds, and then the 'decorating' began. Still a tradition that is held dear to my family's heart, but each year, there are fewer and fewer of the 'greatest generation.' Trying to train the young'uns the importance of this day of remembrance for both those who served their country, and the memory of our loved ones who have gone before us.

This is an excellent representation. It is very important that we remember the sacrifices made for our country and our freedom.

What a wonderful memory and way to remember those who have served. Great pick.

Lovely sentiment! Agree, most kids just see it as the start of the summer. They all need a lesson on Memorial Day’s history and purpose and they need to know that currently we are in a war. Too many really don’t realize it.

Pretty pick!! Yes, we called it “Decoration Day” here in SW Ohio, too, for a long time. I remember when my daughter, at about 6 or 7, asked what Memorial Day was about. I took her out to the VA grounds & we got to see some of the parades & ceremonies, and found markers for Civil War soldiers all the way up to (then) present day. All with flags. It was pretty cool.
