Description from Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick: I have been asked to make a very long necklace for one of my husband's clients. I just had to add Medusa because on Wednesday morning she wanted pink opal, matte black...
8 am Thursday it was changed to "something to go with" her emerald ring so she could have a coordinated look. By very long, she means wrapped around her neck so there's two strands, down to her stomach. I was thinking wrapped links and chain. Oh yeah - she'd love white gold - apparently silver doesn't carry enough status. Wonder if argentium would be ok.
Any thoughts on the whole thing????

Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:Hmm, maybe use matte black seed beads as the bulk of the necklace and add pink opal nuggets surrounded by little emerald beads on either side? Or vice versa? Or, you could tell her to look through your bead box and pick out her own darn design and you just string it! LOL Good luck!
On Feb 19, 2010 at 1:54 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:I like the way you think Ivy!
That’s how I felt Thursday morning. I had a lovely design all planned in my mind with faceted pink opal.
Now she doesn’t want pink opal or matte black. but a totally different color scheme to go with the emerald ring. That’s why I’m considering malachite. She says money is no object – that’s nice for a change.
On Feb 19, 2010 at 2:07 pm #
Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:Then make the entire thing out of the highest-quality faceted emerald you can find and put the Medusa pendant on the end. Ha ha!
On Feb 19, 2010 at 2:08 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:big help, Ivy! LOL
I don’t think her budget’s that big.

grama rose aka stormy says:Hope she has alot of money..did you discuss price..maybe before you start then she might change her mind and come back down to earth!!!!
On Feb 19, 2010 at 2:33 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:You have a good point, Stormy Chick – I’m thinking a price point around $200 – which totally freaks me out. I’m going to chat more with her before investing in any beads or wire because I can’t just lay out that kind of money on spec at the moment.
On Feb 19, 2010 at 3:00 pm #
Mary S - Sweet Chick says:May I suggest a down payment from her?
I’ve had special orders from folks, made them and then have the customer change their mind.
With the kind of $ you have involved, sounds like a chat with her would be wise!
On Feb 19, 2010 at 3:04 pm #
Harmony on Strings says:Absolutely make price clear ahead of time, or if that is awkward since she a clint of your husbands, only use or buy things that you would want to use anyway. Tell her how pleased you are she asked and you would like to make just what she wants so you would like her to sit down with you and look at some design ideas and the items you might use. Give her suggestions for alternates./…I can make this with good quality silver plate instead of sterling, etc. Be in charge, you are the designer but she is the customer and you want to please her. I don’t know her circumstance but even $200.00 in not a lot to pay for a nice custom piece. Tell her if you know her price range you can show her what options she has. I do several pieces a year for people in just this fashion. Good luck, I know it will be beautiful.
On Feb 19, 2010 at 3:14 pm #
Harmony on Strings says:PS you have lot’s of lovely designs posted so show her pictures and see if there is something she particularly likes that you can build on
On Feb 19, 2010 at 3:23 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Thank you Mary and Harmony for your input. I’m definitely going to sit with her and look at options for stones and metals. Harmony – you are so sweet with your compliments. I had thought to show her some of my designs too.
On Feb 19, 2010 at 4:53 pm #
Eeka Mouse says:If she wants components you don’t have in stock, definitely get a downpayment from her before you order. Don’t feel squeemish about doing this – it is the professional thing to do, so just treat it as the way things are done. (most of my custom order clients offer on their own to pay in advance)
Having a monetary stake in the design will help settle indecisive customers, too.
On Feb 19, 2010 at 4:54 pm #

Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:good advice, MERchick!
Thanks for the photos, Nicole – That’s what I have in mind with less chain, more gems.
I’ve just sent Katie some of my photos and asked to meet to discuss stones, metal, $, etc.
I appreciate everyone’s input!

Daisy Chick - Dawn says:I would not hesitate to ask for a deposit to cover the cost of materials. I sometimes ask to see what type of dress, clothing preferences/situation the piece is intended for. You don’t want to make something too casual/formal. wire-wrapping is time consuming. Don’t be afraid to say no to making the piece if the client is unsure. You will save both of you time, money and dissapointment.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:09 am #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Oh my lord -she’s changed her mind again.
Sheltie Mom – I just told my daughter that I’m ready to tell her I can’t do it. She’s started searching websites. I’m definitely going to have to have a heart to heart tomorrow.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:12 am #
Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:YIKES!!! I just came on and read all the comments and was going to add my own — now I am at a loss as to what to say, Jeanne!!! I do think, as the designer, that you have to have that heart-to-heart with Katie about this. She can’t keep changing her mind, especially once the materials have been purchased. I also agree about getting a deposit. Just tell her you need part of the money up front to purchase the materials and that the deposit is non-refundable. Good luck!!!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:17 am #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Thanks Lynn- thhis is the woman Larry drives in Manhattan each week with her 2 little dogs. At first I think it was all about the bling and status. She loves the piece we gave her for Christmas last year and tells everyone it was from her designer on Long Island. But she’s a bit eccentric and needy. Still pushing for white gold. Finally found a supplier for that!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:24 am #
Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:Whoa! Me too, Lynn – saw the comments and had to see what’s up! The lady isn’t named Sybill is she?
My only suggestion? RUN!!!
She really sounds like a piece of work, and if it were me, I would save myself a good bit of grief and find a graceful way out of working with her. I think it will only end in a lot of frustration on your end.
Sorry to be so gloom & doom, but I believe sometimes you just have to go with your gut.
Good luck!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:24 am #
Daisy Chick - Dawn says:Gosh at this point I think I would bow out of this one. And I thought Brides were hard to please.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:25 am #
Vampire Chickie Ravin says:You are soooooo much more patient the n I! I agree with what everyone else has said, especially about the addition of the medusa pendant ::snicker:: DEFINITELY get a deposit, non refundable if possible. Me…heck, I’d of used all the chain on hand and wrung her neck!!!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:27 am #
Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:Funny Ravin!!! Bet they’d NEVER figure out who did that!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:28 am #
Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:Jeanne, I recognized Katie’s name from your previous design for her. This piece isn’t for one of her dogs, is it? ROTFLOL They might be easier to please…..
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:34 am #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:I can’t strangle her, Ravin! She’s a guaranteed cash job for my husband every week. I will talk to her tomorrow. she’s asked about some manufacture stone on a tv shopping website, moonstone, and the latest was smoky quartz. which she thought was 4.50 per 8mm oval (irregular). silly me (no stupid me)clued her in that it was per strand.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:37 am #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:are you kidding Lynn – she’d probably be even more difficult for the dogs. You should have seen their matching sweaters the other day.
(no offense to any of you who dress your dogs)
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:43 am #
Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:Oops, don’t let her know you could make matching collars for them!

Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Thanks Lorrie – just waiting to hear what’s on her mind today.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 11:53 am #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:LOL! What you should do, is make something you could sell without her snooty self; and see what she thinks. I would maybe make a strand or two (tests) and say this is the options I’ve come up with. (like book mark length, just temp strung for her to view)
Say something like You have such wonderful ideas this is what I think you are asking for. Great taste (blah, blah) I love your ideas…which of these 2 /3 is the best choice?
On Feb 20, 2010 at 11:54 am #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:Kind of steer her along, and praise her while ‘nudging’ her foreward! LOL
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:04 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:oooh – I like the idea of a prototype.
Just got an email – todays thought is (and I quote) “THE SMOKY QUARTZ I’M THINKING IS POSSIBLY EGG SHAPED AS LARGE AS A GOOD SIZE RAISIN. STRUNG LIKE PEARLS, BUT WITH A BIT OF WHITE GOLD IN BETWEEN. LONG SO I CAN WRAP AROUND TWO TIMES”
wish LB had rice shape in stock. – but I just might have to get the faceted coins and rounds. I’ll always use those. I do have faceted nuggets – hmmmmm – Lorrie – I think you’re on to something.
ps – I am having fun picking out beads for someone else, thought – lol
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:07 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:oh and “strung like pearls” just ain’t gonna happen – I don’t do knots!
(excuse my grammar – it goes with my mood)
On Feb 20, 2010 at 12:35 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:oooh, shuddering here! knotting pearls is not for me either. I have tried it, and did not like the results. It was hard work, and difficult. When i work w. pearls I often use delica seed beads as spacers to avoid scratching so I do not have to knot.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 1:21 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:here we go – no knots! smoky nuggets, ss rounds and bali.
These nuggets are too large, but maybe it will give here and idea.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 1:21 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:“give her an idea”
I really need to proofread before I submit.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 1:27 pm #
Mommykat Bubbly Chick says:I hope when she sees this… she bows before your talent & declares you a mind reader. I can hear her now. ‘Oh Jeanne- Yes darling, just what I thought. I have exceptional taste. No this is not to big at all. You dont need to buy more beads, what you have is perfect!’ POSITIVE THINKING!
or at the very least hope she doesn’y hate it!
On Feb 20, 2010 at 1:37 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Thanks Lorrie – I’m sure it can’t be that easier. That took less than 30 minutes with pictures. I’m not ready to email her just yet. maybe in another hour. lol
Now I can get back to my aquamarine – I’m doing several birthstone pieces for March. – gotta create my own market. when they see them people will realize they need them.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 1:57 pm #
Cj w aka Slacker Chick says:I thought I was having a bad week. You could ask to see a few of her favorite pieces she wears. I would also do what Lorrie says to nudge her along. Also explain that the sooner she decides the sooner you can get it to her.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 2:25 pm #
Daisy Chick - Dawn says:What a nightmare this piece has turned out to be. I can’t wait to find out what happens. This is better than a mystery novel. Have you perhaps thought of a lariet? They are really long and it give you multiple ways of wearing it? She sounds so hard to please. How about getting flu……., no not really honesty is the best policy. Maybe tell her that you want her to be truly happy with the piece, but with all the changes she has made you won’t work on it until she is certain of what she wants. Tell her that you would feel bad if she didn’t love the necklace. Pearl knotting is hard, seed beads look like knots and are alot less work.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 2:48 pm #
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:Thanks Sheltie Mom and Cj. I was excited when Katie asked me to design something for her, but it has become way to dramatic. Seed beads just won’t do – they’re glass – don’t forget – she wants white gold at $3.50 per 3mm bead. and the jump rings at $2 each. If this wasn’t so funny it would be painful.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 2:55 pm #
Daisy Chick - Dawn says:Does she know how long we are talking? At least 48 inches or more for two strands wrapped arount your neck. Thats alot of 3mm beads at $3.50 a piece. Next she will want flawless emeralds and they better not be heat treated. Good luck to whatever you decide to do. Just listen to your inner-voice. If you make this piece you have got to post it for us to see.
On Feb 20, 2010 at 2:59 pm #
Daisy Chick - Dawn says:I just thought of something, can you get a Voo Doo doll in the image of this beast person to vent on?

KittyMom Linda says:Boy, don’t know how I missed out on this one. Reads like a soap opera/great novel. I feel guilty in saying I’m enjoying all this but it is great reading. A real nail-biter. In all honesty though, don’t let her ruin your real enjoyment. If you feel she would not be happy, just tell her that you want to wait until shows you some pics or even drawings of what she has in mind. Only problem, she changes her mind too often. Good luck and can’t wait to read the next chapter.

Theatrical Me – that’s the way my commissions have been until this one! I love the oohs and aahs. I get stopped in the school hallway they can show me what they’re wearing. I am so not used to this.
I just sent her an email with the photos above. I’ll let y’all know what she says.

Yorkie chick aka CC says:Gem Chick, you have wayyyyyyyy more patience than a saint. You could break it to her that the longer it takes to decide the more the price of gold goes up. Over $1100.00 and climbing which would definitely increase the cost of the necklace. I agree with the rest of the girls this would be hysterical if you weren’t having to go through it!
I’m with Harmony…..Run….quickly to the nearest chapel and pray for safety from this Demon Woman… LOL.

Sorry, I don’t mean to belittle your pain and suffering…..
You’ve received some great advice today — I’m especially liking what Lorrie had to offer you. Your photos/designs are great, too, Jeanne. Good luck!!! I’m shaking my pom-poms for you right now!!!

Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:So here’s the update
Can’t wait to see what MERchick names this one.
So I get a voicemail yesterday morning – she has another idea. When we finally connect – she’s decided the very long necklace she’s envisioned is going to be too pricey (do ya think… with $3 spacers!)
However, she has an old broken necklace that she absolutely loves and would love for me to re-work. It’s currently about 9 strands of seed pearls and too short for her taste.
She is so excited! hmmmmm
She’ll give my husband the necklace on Wednesday for me to look at.
On Feb 22, 2010 at 7:16 pm #
KittyMom Linda says:Oh, God Bless You dear friend. At this point I think I would be freaking out. Are these seed pearls knotted? Post a pic if you can. 9 STRANDS???? Oh my goodness, Can you charge by the pearl?

Faithful Chick aka Faith says:Wow this is maybe the 69th comment. I have missed a lot not being on here lately. Well, we had gypsies come into our retail store and rob the cash office. Got by the service desk no one new. Then there was the guy who pulled a knife on the store manager in shoes. A woman had a fight with her husband on the interstate came into the mall bought a can of terpentine at one end of the mall and set herself on fire in the ladies dressing room. Then we had the toilets break a pipe loose in the mens room the stock boy asked me to run get him towels. I said this is a retail store shut off the water and get a mop. Oh the hazards of working with the public.
On Feb 22, 2010 at 9:36 pm #
Faithful Chick aka Faith says:Well to get to the crux of this I feel for you. I’ll bet she changes her mind many more times. She just doesn’t know what she wants. Maybe if she can see the shorter version of the smokey quartz she might love it. You might at least get a better feel for where all this is going.
Good luck. May the force be with you. Chicky Hugs! You need them. Try not to stress too much (I know easy to say)
