“Event Horizon”

Description from Sarah aka iamhydrogen: Just ordered some of the new onyx cabs! I'll be using them in a bead-embroidery bracelet about black holes.

An event horizon is a space-time boundary that surrounds a black hole; once an object crosses the event horizon, its passage through time and movement through physical space appear to happen at equal rates. This phenomenon creates an illusion of infinity within the black hole.

What can I say? I'm a huge nerd. :)

Oh yeah, i forgot to add in my description that the colored stones are supposed to represent the light and gasses that are found around a black hole. kind of like this:

What a gorgeous photograph! Such an ethereal quality – and then I try to take my brain to the huge scale of what’s pictured, and my brain doesn’t quite have the capacity to completely compute . . .

That’s actually a painting. :) We can’t really photograph black holes; most of the images out there are either pure illustrations (like the one above), computer-generated simulations, or compilations of x-rays taken by deep-space telescopes. This is the closest thing we can get to a real image:

A bit a of a nerd myself but without much of the knowledge. This stuff has always fascinated me. It’s a beautiful and mysterious universe!
