Description from Elis Mom: This is the story of the Gasparilla Pirate's Festival, held every year in downtown Tampa and Ybor City. The festival(AKA party), is loosely based on the legend of Capt. Jose Gaspar, who was a pirate who operated in Southern Florida. The whole thing begins with the 169 foot pirate ship "Jose Gaspar" sailing into Tampa Bay with the escort of hundreds of other boats. The ship is sailed by the "Mystic Krewe of Jose Gaspar". The Krewe is made up of Tampa Bay citizens, and is quite a prestigeous position to have. During the festival, the mayor of Tampa "lends" the key to the city to the Pirates, and a parade and festival ensues. The Krewes toss beads and candy along the parade route thru downtown Tampa along the waterfront, and it resembles Mardi Gras to an extent. There is plenty of drinking and revelry involved. Many years ago, the festival began with a Naval ship entering Tampa Bay, which soon came under "attack" by the Ybor City Navy, who accosted the ship by throwing loaves of Cuban bread and vats of black bean soup at it. The Navy responded with water cannon, but would "succomb" to the "attack". The Captain would "surrender" to the Alcalde of Ybor City, and the sailors would be treated to a night on the town. Unfortuntely, this tradition ended after 9/11, but, I sure would have liked to see a ship being bombarded with Cuban bread and black bean soup!
