“Girl's Day Out - HELP!”

Description from Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick: I have the opportunity to exhibit at an event in my town. It appears to be the kind of upscale shopping event I've been looking for. The problem is the vendor fee is quite high. ($650) My husband thinks I'm totally nuts to even consider it. Please check out their website and tell me what you think.
It's in "The Hamptons" this Saturday.

thank you so much!

If you can swing the fee, I say go for it! :D Best of luck to you! Your designs are beautiful and they will sell like hotcakes!

That is steep to get in! I would say if you are okay with not making the entrance fee up should the sales not cover the difference so that you can break even with supplies and fees go for it. If you can’t afford to take a loss then attend the show and scope out out for a future event. Also keep- in mind you could have the loss made up to you later if people don’t buy. Alot of times though if they don’t buy at the show they may or may not buy later. It may be more important to make contacts. This is the accountant in me, I can’t tell you what to do, do what you feel is right for you!

Hey, Jeanne! :D Great pick for your dilemma!

I checked out the website after we talked yesterday — WOW — so exciting!!! 8O It IS a lot of money — Dawn is right, though, you might make a lot of contacts and/or get custom orders from the show.

I told Bob about it and since he does a lot of stuff with shows, he said to be sure to check on the total number of venders, number of venders selling similar products (jewelry), the lighting; also, could you share a table with someone else and split the fee? I told him I didn’t know about that last one, since you were specifically asked to participate.

Looking foward to hearing your decision and how it goes on Saturday. See — I’m already assuming you’re going to do this! 8) Best of Chicky luck to you, Jeanne! Sending tons of hugs your way!!!

Thank you so much Dawn, Martha and Lynn for your input. This is such a tough decision that I have to make now! My husband and my daughter are telling me no, my friend, who does not bead, is saying go for it and has offered to stop by and “spell” me. They’ll give me 20 tickets for staff and friends. (but no goody bag) I really have to decide.

It is indeed a dilemma… You are the only person who can decide. If it was me, I wouldn’t do it (yet). You need to sell a lot to recuperate the entrance fee and I think that is difficult. I would go for sure but this year, to do some prospecting: who is there, what are they selling, what are their prices, checking out the “competition”. I would make sure to take along some business cards and try to make contacts. If this is an annual event, I would try to participate next year :-) But I know that it sounds like fun and if money isn’t an issue, I would go for it as well :-)

I love this pick, Jeanne…beautiful color combo! :D I know if I were you, I’d really want to participate, but that fee really is steep, and I think for many of us it all comes down to cash flow. In my case, I wouldn’t be in a position to do that right now, but I do agree that you should if you can. If not, attend just to see what it’s all about, make contacts, and gather info. Either way, I wish you the best!!!

Thank you Sarah and Deb for your input!
I agonized over this all day. my decision came down to a few things. Lynn -I hope you’re not dissapointed, but I just can’t do it this year. I really don’t have enough inventory – I sold a lot the last 2 weeks of school and had to take a break for my family. And I need silly little things like crimp tubes and organza bags and clasps. Which of course you don’t get at the same stores. And I don’t think my display is professional enough yet for this kind of event. and I do have a life, which just doesn’t leave me enough time to do or get what I need before Saturday.
Yes I’m a tad disappointed, but have to be realistic.
I asked the “client strategist” to keep me in mind for next year. And she offered me a comp pass for Saturday! And with any luck we’ll get the thunderstorms they’re predicting and I won’t feel so bad. LOL

    Daisy Chick - Dawn says:

Jeanne, I just thought of something. If you attend the show to observe, it will give you and idea of what type of “booth” you may want to set up with. Also if you see what the comptition has now you can offer what they don’t. Spend time reasearching what is unique about you. Maybe you are willing to do bridal tiara something that can be a PITA if you know what I mean. Perhaps yu will repair any piece for the first 6 months w/reciept what ever that can make you stand out. Watch to see what people are buying and you need to think about who attends, what is thier age group. A teens taste is totally different than a 40 something plus so are budgets. Food for thought for you.

Jeanne, it sounds as though you made the right decision for you this year. I’m only disappointed that I don’t live close enough to attend this fab event with you! :D Dawn gave lots of great advice — same things I was thinking of suggesting — great minds…..LOL

ynn – I would’ve brought you in a heartbeat. My good friend, Gail, gets my other free ticket. She had offered to come sit at my booth so I could get a break.
Dawn – Thank you so much for your suggestions. I just might bring a notebook with me. Their target group is the 21 – 39 year old professional woman with a minimum. They must be 21 because there are 4 bars on the premises with complimentary drinks.

I’ll let you all know just what it is. Wonder if I can sneak some photos???

I would be careful Jeanne with a camera, they might toss you out and you need to worry about copywrite infringements as a possibility. You might descretely sketch something, also remember 21 and 22 yr olds are still in college with a “Not quite your Professional lack of experience age”. What are the clothing stores, that will be featuring items, that should be a tip off for you.

Sounds like you have this all figured out by the time I read it. I think it’s a great idea to go and check it out! Maybe they’ll have a bead booth! Any way…Great pick, your jewelry is fantastic and I’m sure it will sell at any time.

    Boston Lady says:

I got a free pass this year to a gem show. I saw a lot of women there, walking around with all their jewelry on. Not me. I walked around like I didn’t know what day it was to feel the place out. When asked, I acted like I just came because I got a free pass. Take a lot of mental notes and see how venders there carry themselves and interact with customers. Check out the goods they are selling and the prices they are asking for things. Look at dispays, business cards, table cloths, etc. As tempting as it might be to go to the show as a vender, go as a spectator this year and see what’s what. You may benefit by it immensely. Just my thoughts on it.

P.S. Love your pick. I really love the colors together. I would have never thought of it myself. Great inspiration.

Boston Lady – I’ve used the aquamarine with the stormy blue pearls. They’re gorgeous together! I’m definitely going to have to try it with garnet!

ok – so I did go to the event on Saturday – as a spectator. I definitely need to upgrade my display for something like this. Foam board covered with felt and ribbon is fine for the church fair, but not at Shecky’s. My price point is right on target. The ladies were there to shop and they were looking for bargains. One or two vendors said they wouldn’t come back because their items were too expensive for the crowd. And my designs were different from the other jewelry booths.
I did collect business cards and will be busy checking out websites. I’ll have to think about the NYC event or next summer’s out here.

    Boston Lady says:

Good Morning! I’m so glad that things worked out for you. See, now you know what to expect and how to design your display, etc. I think you made the right choice. Also, now, you can work your inventory up gradually and not have to overtax yourself. Thanks for responding back. Have a great day!
