Thank you for you kind thoughts. My mother was a polio survivor of the last epidemic in Minnesota in 1952. While it didn’t kill her, it left her right leg completely useless, her left leg about 30% so. For years she walked with Kenny sticks, living a relatively normal life. Never having driven a car, she took driving lessons with the hand-controls installed in the family car. She received a 98 on her behind-the-wheel test!
Having started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil, she became an illustrator for a few children’s magazines and started a little children’s magazine of her own. While she was young she was also an accomplished and highly talented dancer, to the point her instructor wanted Mom to quit school and turn professional. My grandmother put the brakes on that notion.
As I mentioned earlier, the polio did not kill her in 1952 but the ramifications of the damage caused by the disease did in the end. She kept having frontal-lobe micro strokes, which caused her memory to fail during the past year. I stopped seeing her in June as my visits just caused her terrible turmoil and a disruption of her schedule but I knew she was safe in her room at a splendid local care facility.
Although she would have turned 91 on 1 February, she may have continued along as she was for some years as the women in her family live forever but the polio did win after all. She suffered a spontaneous fracture of her right hip when that foot fell off her wheelchair foot rest; 36 hours she was dead and I wasn’t there.
I did get back to make arrangements and clean out her room.
Now someone else lives there and I can’t visit her anymore.

Guess I needed to tell someone her story. My apologies for the length of this comment.

P.S. She began taking oil painting classes in 1965 and ended up painting and teaching for over 30 years, becoming well-known for her birch trees.

Your mother was obviously an amazing and talented woman, and my heart and thoughts are with you as you come to terms with her loss. This is such a lovely pick in her memory…maybe you could create a necklace from it and wear it to keep her close. Thank you for sharing your memories with us, and you will be in the prayers of many, myself included.

Dear Chicky Red Haired Grammy – What a wonderful story and a great tribute to your Mum. I am so sorry that you lost her so recently. It is always good to talk about these things and I want you to know that my heart is with you. I lost my mother a little over 3 years ago and she was almost 93. It is always difficult and I still have days that I miss her. Also, I recently lost my younger sister to cancer. She was my only sibling. So, I am still dealing with that loss. If ever you need to talk to a friend, please don’t hesitate to say hello and send me a message.

    Kindest regards, Harriet M.
