On May 14, 2009 at 2:01 pm #
Fashion Chick aka SC says:Smoky Rose
I was hoping for stones and silver, but I just placed an order that should be here today so that will have to satisfy me. Maybe next week!
On May 14, 2009 at 2:05 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Thanks! Smoky Rose, yeah I’m a little disappointed too, but I’m glad they got the clasps
I’m sure there will be new beads next week! (I’m still jealous about Anita getting all those beads)…
On May 14, 2009 at 2:06 pm #
Smoky Rose says:I know……. I just always like fresh stones for Picks……. I’m sure we’ll get some next week…..
what did you order, Fashion Chick?
On May 14, 2009 at 2:07 pm #
Smoky Rose says:did she? I knew she was going. What did she get? she said it was good, yeah?
On May 14, 2009 at 2:10 pm #
Fashion Chick aka SC says:Well, Smoky I’m getting Tiger Eye sticks, Turquoise sticks, Brioche Agate Tumbled Nuggets, Blue Opal 6mm Rounds, Brown Zebra Jasper Tumbled Nuggets and my FREE Black Tree Agate 4mm Rounds from the puzzle. I think I forgot one stone. Oh well……

Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Some of the Beads
On May 14, 2009 at 2:57 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Does anyone have any idea of what type of wire is the strongest, most flexible, relatively thin, (and of course not too expensive)? I’m using Beadalon 7 strand .015” now, but I was wondering if there’s anything better.
On May 14, 2009 at 3:09 pm #
Mary S - Sweet Chick says:Little Chick, the only wire I’ve ever used is Accu-flex 49 strand so I can’t really give you a comparison on price or quality.
You can get it in many different sizes and strengths. 7, 19, 21 and 49 strand.
Sizes come in .012, .014, .019, and .024 diameter.
You, I know are familiar with FMG. (Don’t kick me out LB!)So you probably already know this. You may just have to shop around and do a price comparison with other brands.
Anybody else know what to tell Little Chick about wire?
On May 14, 2009 at 3:14 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Is the 49 strand strong?
On May 14, 2009 at 3:16 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Little Chick, I was using what you are now – because that’s what my teacher used. I had the MOST embarassing situation when a heavish piece of my own broke right off my neck… you can imagine. I was telling the story over the weekend and Harriet and Shannon both suggested 49 strand! Ran RIGHT out to Michaels and grabbed some. It is a little more costly, but….. not enough, I don’t think to worry about it when your pride and reputation are on the line, with a heavier piece, of course – for little light weight things, I would imagine that I’ll still use the other.
On May 14, 2009 at 3:16 pm #
Smoky Rose says:according to Shannon, not toooooo much thicker – may have an issue with getting it thru pearls, but a ton stronger!
On May 14, 2009 at 3:17 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Yeah, I was thinking about that huge free bronzite bead…I’d hate for something to break.
On May 14, 2009 at 3:18 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:I have trouble even getting FW pearls through what I use now…(so I use SWC pearls)
On May 14, 2009 at 3:23 pm #
Smoky Rose says:what’s swc? I know…. pearls are a bear sometimes… have you ever used a reamer, to make the hole a little wider? If/when you do – use much caution not to breathe any of the dust – or your animals – not ridiculous to wear a mask – and then clean up the dust with a damp papertowel, so that it does not blow into the air.
On May 14, 2009 at 3:24 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Swarovski crystal pearls! I got a reamer from FMG and it didn’t work
so I’m sending it back! Is beadalon or accu-flex better?
On May 14, 2009 at 3:29 pm #
Smoky Rose says:ooooooh! yeah Swarovski. oh – that I don’t know, Little Chick. Sweet Mary! Calling Sweet Mary!
or CAS! CAS, you there?!?
On May 14, 2009 at 3:32 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:The SWC pearls are perfectly round and I think have the base of a SW crystal…they’re also drilled with a bigger hole.
On May 14, 2009 at 3:33 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:but not huge!
On May 14, 2009 at 3:33 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Harriet! Sweet Mary! CAS! Little Chick needs wire advice, please
On May 14, 2009 at 3:34 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:I sure do!
On May 14, 2009 at 3:36 pm #
Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:Hey girls! Smoky, I have a question, too: that necklace that broke, what type of wire were you using and how heavy was the necklace? Cuz almost all of my designs are chunky and HEAVY gemstone pieces and I DO NOT want that to happen to me! You must have been mortified!!
On May 14, 2009 at 3:43 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Where did everyone go?
On May 14, 2009 at 3:58 pm #
CAS says:1st Rule of Thumb for wire : the greater the number of strands the stronger the wire. Think of it this way; if you’re using 7-strand, and a strand breaks you have 6 left holding your wire together, if you’re using 49-strand, and a strand breaks you have 48 holding it together. The strands in a 49-strand are alot thinner than in a 7-strand, but there are alot more of them.
2nd Rule of Thumb for wire: the greater the number of strands the more flexible the wire. 7-strand wire is alot stiffer than 49-strand, so you get a better drape with 49-strand.
3rd Rule of Thumb for wire: check the diameter and “test” weight. Most wires, no matter the brand, come in a variety of diameters. You’ll want the smallest diameter for things like FWP, and a larger diameter for stones. The reason is the “test” weight, larger diameters have a higher “test” weight. What is “test” weight you ask? “Test” weight is the amount of weight a piece of wire can hold before breaking, the higher the “test” the stronger the wire.
I don’t think that there is a huge difference in brands, it depends on what you like and what you are using it for.
On May 14, 2009 at 4:02 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Ivy, I would actually like to weigh it – it was/is 40″ of rutilated quartz nuggets! heavy! – dummy was using 7 strand – was gonna double the wire right from the get go, but two wires would not fit thru the pearls…
On May 14, 2009 at 4:05 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Ivy, I wanted to crawl under the table – I was sooooo embarassed. I think too, that my loop of wire into the jumpring may have been too tight – that has always been my style, right, wrong, or otherwise… just me – and with a light piece probably wouldn’t have made nearly the difference as with something so heavy.
It was embarassing to tell the girls – but darn it, dontcha know, like with everything else here @ LB, you learn so much from sharing, it is incredible!!!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:06 pm #
J Yee smart chick says:hey chickies,
sure do know what you’re all talking about, it’s SO horrible to have a necklace strand break while you’re weariing it…. little chicky and smoky, I too have had to rethink what I use and how I string, since I love to use gemstone beads and lots of ‘em in my creations!
CAS, your advice on the different aspects of what to use in terms of beading wire is great, sure appreciate it!!!!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:06 pm #
Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:Thanks Smoky. Glad you survived the incident and weren’t discouraged! lol CAS, thanks for the info!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:07 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Ivy, Harriet also had a tremendous suggestion, to put a little note into the package, when you sell a piece – now, I remember yours are on consignment at a boutique… not sure how’d we’d do that – but… a note saying to the effect, if anything happens to this piece, to please allow me to repair it – as wear and tear that comes from lovingly wearing it, shows me how much you enjoy it. I liked that idea.
On May 14, 2009 at 4:09 pm #
CAS says:Aaaaaahhhhh …. my poor Mare … it happens to all of us, I’ve had to restring a few things myself (a few things more than once). Embarassing, maybe, but a learning experience for sure. Hugs baby!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:09 pm #
Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:Yup, that’s a GREAT idea! Thanks Smoky/Harriet!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:12 pm #
Smoky Rose says:Thank you CAS!!! I haven’t had a hug all day! Hugs to you too! I know, I know, I learned and in retrospect, I’m glad it happened – embarassment aside (we’re talking about a 6’0″ clutz who trips on her own shadow…I’ve survived embarassment, plenty!) if it had not happened – all this dialogue last Sat and this afternoon may not have happened – so I, and we have learned. So glad for you ladies!!! Hugs CAS!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:16 pm #
CAS says:Mare, thanks so much for the hug. Now I feel all warm and fuzzy, which is great on a cold, VERY windy, rainy day. Here’s another hug
for you, just cuz!
PS: NO HUGS FOR POLAR BEAR!
On May 14, 2009 at 4:52 pm #
Smoky Rose says:no, no polar bear hugs – that thing is grabby, if you know what I mean?
On May 14, 2009 at 4:54 pm #
J Yee smart chick says:hugs to you smoky, I’ve also had my own necklaces (lariats) come apart on me while I was wearing ‘em…
CAS, no hugs for mr polar bear???? aaawwww…
On May 14, 2009 at 5:04 pm #
CAS says:He had an attitude today, and didn’t buy the milk & eggs, only $60 worth of shrimp. Now what’s Smoky Rose gonna do with all that shrimp, Polar Bear probablly didn’t even bring back any change.
On May 14, 2009 at 5:04 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Great suggestions! Thanks! Well, I guess maybe I should use new wire for necklaces (I might stick to the wire I’m using for the bracelets because I recently bought a lot of it)…
On May 14, 2009 at 5:16 pm #
seashellsally says:Just a note: wouldn’t recommend reaming anything swarovski, don’t know if the pearls have the same lead crystal, but I wouldn’t take a chance. Lead is a health hazard and when in a fine dust will go everywhere.
Reaming fails mostly because they forget to tell you to ream with water. I have an electric bead reamer that I love. It takes off the rough spots around the holes so that there is less chance for abrasion on the wire and I can enlarge holes when needed, to a point.
CAS’s rules of the thumb are spot on. I use 49 strand exclusively. I pick the size based on the design. I use a size that will fit through the smallest hole (don’t forget your crimps and you go through twice, with larger stones, larger wire and bigger crimps). If the test weight of the wire is not sufficient for the weight of the design, I will go for the larger sized (diameter) wire, and change the design. Or, if it is practical, I will ream the smaller stones. With practice, you will learn to think of this up front and not purchase items if too difficult, or time consuming for a ‘work around’. However, there are those items that I have fallen in love with and I will do anything to ‘make it work’. I use mostly freshwater pearls but have used the swarovski. I use 0.018 and 0.024 exclusively (Beadalon, but Accuflex is fine), there is also a Griffin(?) brand as well that I used in the past. Having a resale license, I obtain wholesale and if you buy in bulk, you can save a little $$.
I hope this helps.
Luv your picks Luv to Bead. Keep at it.

Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Thanks for those tips Seashellsally! That helps a lot!
On May 14, 2009 at 5:23 pm #
Luv2bead - Little Chick says:Well, night Chicks! Talk to you tomorrow!
On May 14, 2009 at 7:07 pm #
Mary S - Sweet Chick says:Ditto to everything CAS said about the wire. And like Seashellsally, I use 49 strand exclusively.
Since the concensus is that most brands are comparable to each other, I may start looking at several to see which are less expensive.
Seashellsally, thank you for the tips on reaming beads. Like Little Chick, I had purchased one and it didn’t work for me either. also a BIG THANK YOU about reaming crystal. Never would have occured to me about the lead content.

seashellsally says:Happy to help anytime.
Mommykat has a good suggestion.
Personally, I haven’t found a magazine that covers everything I am interested in on a regular basis. What I do, cruise the magazine section of the market, also art supply stores and some book stores. I rationalize that it is OK since I do purchase single copies if something looks good.
In the current ‘Bead & Button Special: Crystal Jewelry 2′ there is a 15% Michaels coupon to clip (entire jewelry purchse) good to July 31st. Also in the same issue there is a new line of wife by ‘BeadSmith’ called Flex-rite. Haven’t tried it but looks interesting with 24K plated and the brass in addition to the standard stuff. Comes in 49 strand and 7 diameters.
Try ‘Rings & Things’, Washington State wholesale who will sale retail at this time. Their Beadalon is comparably priced, link: http://rings-things.com/
Hope this helps.

Happy Chick aka Harriet says:All really good info. Sorry I was out of it for a while, but feeling much better now.
Little Chick & Smoky, I read this really long bunch of notes, and I am amazed what knowledgeable and experienced people we have contributing.
One last entry: If You have Hobby Lobby where you live, they run weekly sales, (info. they will e-mail you) with good coupons. Often, they have a 40% off coupon, for any not otherwise on sale item. I have often used that to buy my beading wire. Sure helps stretch the $$$!
