Very nice Downey…Has everybody gotten the birthday puzzle done for their free prize?

  2. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Thanks :) I sure hope so…mine’s tucked safely away in my cart (which of course means I’ll buy more beads!!)

  3. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Amen to that! I’ll looking for a new home if I can’t get this “addiction” under control! lol….I’m beading and selling as fast as I can, along with teaching school, so you know…I found my lb mail in the spam folder..that was why I hadn’t seen the notices from lb…

  4. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Heheh…I was more would end up in spam…then I wouldn’t be so tempted ;) …I need to get on this selling thing so I can justify all of this! Teaching isn’t keeping up with it…

  5. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

When does teaching keep up with anything in life?!?!

  6. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Downy, do you wear your jewelry to school? I’ve been making one item in the evening and I wear it to school and its been sold before I leave that afternoon. My problem is pricing…How do you decide what to charge? Is there a formula out there somewhere?

  7. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Too right! I’m so glad there are other teacher’s on this site, because no one else seems to understand that!!

  8. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Teachers are really creative aren’t we? What do you teach. I teach K in NC

  9. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I have been…and I actually just got a request for a nest necklace…so maybe this is the start of something…I hate the pricing thing…I read somewhere that you should charge for supplies and your “time,” which could be anything…I’ve seen necklaces online that are completely within my level that are selling for 150.00!! That to me is a little crazy…

  10. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I’ve got 9-12 up here in MA…the other end of the spectrum :)

  11. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

Girl, you are so BRAVE, teaching K. I get them for 1 hour at the end of the day, and I’m ready to leave for wal-mart as soon as I see them coming. We’ve got a very ROUGH group this year. Next year’s batch promises to be better, thank heavens!

I wear my jewelry to school, and everyone loves it. They won’t buy it, though, because there’s another teacher who sells jewelry dirt cheap. She buys it somewhere already made and sells it necklace and earrings set for $8–$10. I can’t match that. She sells bracelets for $4. Like I say, I can’t match that.

  12. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

BTW, it’s a BEAUTIFUL pick, Downy!

  13. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

I started teaching in middle school years ago,….talk about hormonal soup! I’m so glad that I don’t teach that group anymore. Little ones are cuter and easier is some ways…
Yeah, on the nest necklaces…sell, sell, sell….I sold my first ones for $45. It had tourmaline stones and a branch in it. I don’t know if that was a good price or not. I’ve seen them for $95 and up online.

  14. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Thanks Debra! That’s too bad about the other teacher…I’d much rather buy your handmade pieces!!

  15. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I started in middle school too…never again!! Awesome on your nests! Yeah, everything online is really expensive…you start to wonder–are you underselling yourself? But people are looking for a deal…

  16. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

Are those the chicky-nests you’re talking about?

  17. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Oh Debra…what is this other teacher making on her cheap stuff, if she’s selling it for that cheap? Doesn’t anyone want beauty and quality? I don’t like the feel of inexpensive things…Call me diva?!?!?!

  18. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

No clue. I think they just like cheap. Texas teachers are VERY poorly paid. LOL!

  19. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

I’ve made a couple of things for my best friend (a 1st grade teacher) to give to his wife. I would take a class, wear the finished product to school, and he would go crazy over it. Since he’s my best bud, I just charge him for the materials. Then he pays for the labor with vanilla vodka. A satisfactory arrangement all around.

  20. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Yeah, Debra…I’ve made 3 nests now. This last one is MINE…No selling it…I discovered the “joy” of stringing peridot chips….OMG I never did see the holes..It was stab and jab LOL Anyway, I’ll try to get another picture of this one…Its copper and green pearls and murano glass beads…

  21. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Oooh…nice payment there…I think I would like coconut rum….I think I may have to add that to my sales pitch…

  22. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Sounds nice! I love murano glass…can’t wait ’til LB gets it to us!!

  23. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Vanilla vodka and coconut rum…girls is there a beach party coming up nearby and soon?

  24. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

Oh, I would LOVE to see it!!!!!!! I took a class in Austin Tuesday night and picked up some copper wire to make nests. Then I forgot all about it.

I DID finish the first chain mail earring I was working on. Took a picture, then realized I’d left the usb cord at school. I’ll pick it up tomorrow and post it. It has over 90 jump rings in it. I just don’t know if I can make another one. I don’t know WHAT I was thinking signing up for that class. The pic in the class letter looked really cool…didn’t realize it had all those jump rings. It was a group of about 7 ladies, and we were all cussing up a-storm! Really funny.

  25. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

a party sounds good to me! I’m excited about the Murano glass, too! Love it!

  26. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I’ve seen all kinds of stuff on chain mail…looks really neat…can’t wait to see your photos Debra!

Oh goodness…sign me up for the beach…still over a month to go…my students may do me in before then!!

  27. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

How close are you to Austin, Debra? I have a penpal from the 4th grade who teaches in Austin. We’ve never met, but we talk to each other every couple of years. She was teaching 5th grade last time I talked to her. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if you knew her? Her name is Rita.

  28. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

I live about an hour north of Austin. Not too far to go to have a really good time beading with fellow beaders!

I’m excited about summer. There’s a group that likes to get together Tuesdays and Thursdays to bead and visit. I’ll be able to go when school is out. It will be fun!

  29. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

I have four weeks left of school too. We get 8 weeks off exactly…Seems like the summer is getting shorter and shorter. What happened to the 11 or 12 weeks we had when we were kids?

  30. CAS
    CAS says:

I haven’t sold anything yet (still too chicken, forgive the pun), but I’ve been told by reliable Chick sources that the formula for pricing is twice the cost of materials plus $25 to $30/hour for talent/design/creativity/time.

Pictures … show me pictures … of the beautiful Chicky Nest-laces. :)

  31. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

I don’t know, but I LONG for those summer days that just seemed to stretch endlessly on.

Our last day is June 3. I’m taking next Friday off to visit a friend in the Dallas area and go to my very 1st bead show while I’m there. Looking forward to it. Just hope the weather holds. It gets so stormy in May in Texas!

  32. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Our last day is June 19…with finals June 25…I have no idea where those three months we used to have went…of course, we had a pretty bad winter up here, but we still had fewer days off than any other school!

  33. Southern Chick
    Southern Chick says:

Well, I’m a beat chick! I had 17 moms in my room this am for “muffins for moms” in honor of mother’s day. The kids sang and we all had muffins and juice. Fun but exhausting! So night to you all. There’s a thunderstorm brewing up outside…Its actually going to drop down to the mid 70s next week..It’ll be nice to have it a bit cooler!

  34. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Night Southern Chick! I’m exhausted myself but wrestling with a project right now!

  35. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

You know, we used to do “muffins for mom”, and then the last principal we had didn’t want to do it sooooo, we didn’t.

It was 99 today. Next week is supposed to be cooler–mid 80′s.

  36. CAS
    CAS says:

Hey Downy Chick, where in MA do you teach? My sister-in-law teachs High School Social Studies here in NH.

  37. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

CAS! Didn’t even see you jump in here…I’m a bit chicken myself…gotten compliments, but I’m always afraid the piece will shatter the minute I give it away!

  38. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I teach Soc. Studies too! I’m in the central part of the state

  39. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

As they say…God Bless Texas…99 degrees! Wow Debra!

  40. CAS
    CAS says:

I’ve given alot of pieces away to my Mom, sisters, sister-in-law, Nana, aunt, neice, friends-so-close-to-be-like-family, and my best friend. I’ve just not gotten up the courage to sell yet.

  41. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

    Same…so far, they’ve all been gifts…

  42. CAS
    CAS says:

Well Downy Chick, I’ll likely be driving past you tomorrow on I91 to heading to CT for Mothers Day.

  43. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

I didn’t even realize it. Just glanced at the computer screen and saw the “99″. That’s kinda unusual for May. Thank heavens!

I wish I knew how to sell my stuff. I’m just not sure what people really want. Don’t know where to sell it, either.

  44. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I’m going to sound like a major girl right now…you may be driving past me, but (sadly, I know) I wouldn’t even know it…have no concept of routes, only landmarks…ridiculous, I know! (ok, I know Rt 2…)

We had a period when it went from about 40 to 80 in a day…the sudden change made it feel like it was about 180!

  45. CAS
    CAS says:

Hi Chicky D! I guess we should ask Little Chick or Bubbly Chick how they got started selling, since they both have shows this weekend.

  46. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Hi Chicks! Been trying to catch up with this chat for a bit!

Still trying to figure out where all of you live… I’m in south-central Kansas. 2 days of sun in a row – then rain on Sunday.

  47. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

It sounds like Little Chick really knows what she’s doing too…sounds like she sells quite a few pieces…

  48. CAS
    CAS says:

I91 goes from the Vermont border through Greenfield, Deerfield, Holyoke and Springfield to the CT border (to Hartford/New Haven). If that helps. I’m horrible with 1st time directions, I’m very much a “landmark” driver myself.

  49. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

Sounds good to me. I’m ready to find out. I’ve gotta figure out a way to finance this addiction! FAST!!

  50. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Hi Lori! I’m in central Mass…been raining all week!

  51. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Ohhhh…ok…I know where that is now…Deerfield’s about an hour west of me…but there’s the big Yankee Candle outlet which I LOVE there

  52. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Hi Downy! Are you Chicky D?

  53. CAS
    CAS says:

Good evening Dizzy Chick, nice to see you! I live in mid-western New Hampshire by the Connecticut River. I’ve never met someone from Kansas before, an honor.

  54. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Never mind. Brain dump. Hi Debra & Michelle!

  55. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Never been to or met anyone from NH, either! Pleasure is mine!

  56. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

lol….it’s ok Lori…it’s late (at least where I am) and has been a long week…all is forgiven :D

  57. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I’m in the “Non-Sellers” club too. Buy & hoard & create, but very little return on the “work”!

  58. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Thanks, Michelle! That much I’ve learned, we’re a forgiving bunch.

    You are up late!

  59. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Anybody try to string a piece that just doesn’t want to cooperate?! Argh!

You’re in the right place! We’re all tryint to figure out how to get into that return piece too :)

  60. CAS
    CAS says:

Now you’ve got it, we drive right past the Yankee Candle. It’s great in the summertime, because sometimes you can smell the candles when you have the car windows down. So Downy Chick, you’re more towards Wochester way?

  61. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Indeed…almost 1! I was going to go to bed and then started stringing something…now it won’t do what I want!

  62. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Cooperate how? Doesn’t look right or won’t string? Yes to both!!!

Up till the wee hours doing many of those!

  63. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I love that place…so great inside…have you even been? Tons of stuff…come to think of it, I think Deerfield has craft fairs…maybe that’s where we can start…hmmm…yep, I’m more out towards Worc., the lovely little place that it is!

  64. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Just won’t string…I’ve go this circular pearl thing going on and trying to attach it to something else…but it just doesn’t want to.

  65. CAS
    CAS says:

Michelle, they’re called “Demon beads” when they stop cooperating, I’ve wrestled with some myself. Sometimes it’s best to let them have their way, and come back at them another time (I also find the fingers stop working when I’m tired, and the furstration level rises).

  66. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Mmmmm, Yankee Candles! Used to burn those constantly till we got birds. I miss that.

We drive by cattle yards on occasion. Does that count?

Seriously, we’re not in feedlot central, more wheat, milo, corn & soy beans.

  67. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I agree with CAS. it’s too late to fight the thing. I never learn, but will fight to the finish, then decide to unstring it anyway.

  68. CAS
    CAS says:

“Cow” was the very first word I said according to my parents. :)

  69. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Such a good idea…I thought those little 2mm beads were the true demons…but this is much larger…a break may be indeed called for!

  70. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

I pass by this farm everyday with these adorable little goats…I always want to steal one and take it home with me!

  71. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Debra, you there? I read about your earrings. You’ve got to finish – or all that hard work will be lost. Unless you use it as a pendant.

  72. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

Y’all are brave souls…beading into the wee hours. I’m getting ready to go to bed. Don’t want to, but I have a meeting in Waco tomorrow morning.

    ‘night all…

  73. CAS
    CAS says:

Besides, sometimes when you’re sleeping Downy Chick, you dream of beads … ooooohhhh … and they give you an answer to your beading “problem”. Beads can be very wise in your dreams. Lol ;)

  74. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

I seriously considered the pendant idea but discarded. I will persevere and finish that dad-blamed other earring. Give me a couple of days to recover and do something fast and rewarding, first. I need a little instant gratification first. But I won’t let it wait more than a day or 2 OR I’ll never get around to finishing it. lol

  75. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

CAS, what a first word! Bet they made lots of jokes about that one!

Michelle, my sister had goats try to eat her clothes in a petting zoo & has been afraid ever since! But they are cute, someone owns some down the road from us. I love seeing the kids!

  76. ChickyD aka Debra
    ChickyD aka Debra says:

When I first started “pickin’”, I had a night that I dreamed about picks ALL NIGHT LONG. It was NOT fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! don’t know why, though…

  77. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

    Night Debra!

Oh God CAS…that reminds me…one night…no lie…I was so tired (up early and to bed late correcting papers) that while I was sleeping I was hallucinating that I was on the BGBM….how weird is that??

  78. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I know what you mean, procrastination makes me loose enthusiasm for a lot of things. I have so many partially strung necklaces & bracelets! It’s a crime.

  79. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

The kids are the cutest! That farm must have just had some born not to long ago because they’re the smallest little things!

  80. CAS
    CAS says:

Hey, it’s better than my next younger sister’s first word. Hers was “Bee”. Every single insect, animal, person was a “Bee”. I at least knew what a cow was.

I love little goats, a woman I used to work with raises them, and there’s a farm on the way to my brother’s that has some. Soooo cute!

  81. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

    Night, Debra!

  82. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I STILL get the urge to look for an egg every time I take a close-up look at a bead, especially the size chart! I was sure they would hide an egg in there & checked what seemed like hundreds!

  83. CAS
    CAS says:

    Night Debra!

  84. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

That egg hunt was crazy! can’t believe that stats they collected on that! We were out of control :)

  85. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

That’s the truth! I can’t believe the amount of time I put into finding those darn eggs! And then HAD to place an order!

  86. CAS
    CAS says:

Goes to show that “rabid beaders” will do anything for “free beads”. Of course I’m not saying we’re “rabid beaders”, we have self-control … don’t we, huh … don’t we …

  87. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Seriously! I could have sworn I went through every page…never did find all of those darn little eggs….think I gave up after 10…but I did find a lot of cool products I probably wouldn’t have…

  88. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

suuuuuure…self-control…you can call it that ;)

  89. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I read above someone’s formula for pricing. Was that from anyone still here?

  90. CAS
    CAS says:

    Me, Dizzy Chick.

  91. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

What’s self control? Seriously, it’s nice reading about people that have the same affliction I do. I got put on “probation” thru June, and I still have darn beads in my cart because of the puzzle giveaway!

  92. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

CAS, have you used that formula successfully?

It seems SO high for where I am. I’ve resorted to a 50% markup on materials. Period. But still don’t have the nerve to really get out there & “advertise”.

  93. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

That puzzle got me in so much trouble…I just got an order in today (placed Tuesday night)…and I’ve already got stuff in the cart again!

  94. CAS
    CAS says:

I haven’t sold anything yet, Lori. This is the formula the other “selling” Chicks gave me when I asked about what I should charge (when I finally do sell). The big thing they said is “don’t undervalue your talent and time”. Your pieces are unique, and took your time and talent to produce, people are not just paying for the beads (they could buy beads themselves), they are paying for your creativity and vision. As far as doubling material cost, think of it this way, the cost of replacing what you’ve used.

  95. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I am still fighting the urge to try to sneak an order in. Just one little order… but then to pay for shipping when it could be FREE…

  96. J Yee smart chick
    J Yee smart chick says:

what a lovely Pick, love the greens, blues and yellows… didn’t notice those fascinating african jade spears, such a lovely dark green/brown stone…

love the discussions about pricing – yep I’ve heard similar comments too… I’ve had an artist tell me I priced the pieces I tried to sell way too cheap, she told me she has seen lower quality stuff for higher prices… we women are used to undervaluing what we do I figure… I also really wanna see pics of the birds nest necklaces everyone’s making… Please please please… :)

  97. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Thanks Joyce! Some of us have posted pictures under my pick “A nest for the Chicks.”

Thanks also for your comments on the pricing…you’re right…we do undervalue our stuff…we never want to put anyone out perhaps…

  98. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

I suppose you’re right. I did get to take some of my jewelry to a dentist’s office a couple times (my mom wore some earrings the dentist liked, so I got an invite). I was doubling my materials at that point, and did okay. I was paying more at the time (hadn’t found Lima yet!)

But the current economy has put a big dent in what people will spend in our area.

It would be nice to break even but I don’t think that will ever happen!

  99. CAS
    CAS says:

Smart Chick, I think “LB” is sneaking “out of stock” beads back in again. I noticed the African Jade Spears too, also the African Brown Rhyolite & Brazilian Black Stone Donuts are back.

  100. J Yee smart chick
    J Yee smart chick says:

    downy chick,

yes I have seen the pics of the recently created “birds’ nest” necklaces come to think of it…

CAS, that L.B. staff sure is “sneaky lil’ devils”… I found a few weeks ago those mysterious lovely green iris coin pearls had gone BACK into stock, wish I had $54 for a strand of those lil’ sweeties… :)

  101. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Undervaluing is easy to do, I think. But I like the idea of someone getting something nice at a price they can afford.

I never thought this would be my job, just a fun hobby that I fell into. So break even or a little better would make me (and my husband) happy!

  102. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Agreed Lori…competitive pricing has its ups…I’ve seen stuff for 100+…not much sense paying that if you can buy it from someone else cheaper…

  103. CAS
    CAS says:

I guess it depends on if you view your pieces as “nice necklaces etc… that you can buy in a department store” or as “works of art”.

  104. Dizzy Chick Lori Z
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Smart Chick, I noticed the coin pearls too! Never saw those come in on a New or Back in Stock.

I dream of Prasiolite, Kunzite, & Charoite. Oh to have $$$$$…

  105. J Yee smart chick
    J Yee smart chick says:

    dizzy chick,

while I do agree I like folks to get something they like at a reasonable price, people often don’t know the value of what artists create… a dear friend of mine in northwest Florida who is a wonderful artist and painter sometimes gets asked to take family group pics and turn them into oil paintings – she said that people sometimes balked at the prices she would charge till she explained that she had to take each person in the photo and transfer the image onto canvas, then paint ALL of the folks into the whole… so sometimes they maybe expected to pay her – as just a comparison, $25 instead of $75 for a portrait w/ three people in it…

  106. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Well Chickies…this has been such a wonderful conversation, but now I must get myself to my much needed bed…have a great night :)

  107. CAS
    CAS says:

Nighty-nite Downy Chick, I’m off to bed too. Dream of beads my Chickys, dream of beads….

  108. J Yee smart chick

Yes, the price for art is very subjective. My mom (I’m old, just lucky enough to still have her around) is always telling me to start selling whatever it is that I’m into at the moment. But if/when I do, she says the price is too low.

I shift between the “pride” of creating something nice, and putting myself on the buyer’s end. I also tend to consider the “market”. Your painter friend has every right justify her prices! She’s providing a service & product that is very unique. I just don’t see what I do as comparable. Nice, but not so unique.

The flip side is the frustration of seeing poor quality or design going for big bucks!

Wow, a long reply that says very little! Sorry…

Plucky, yes there’s a blog. Hmmm, thinking of how to get you there. Movie Chick set it up, there’s her gmail address somewhere, I will find it & get back here.

Well, it is comparable and you have every right also to justify your prices. It is a talent that is just as unique, not everyone can do what we do. I read on the internet a while back that jewellery sold in stores is marked up anywhere from 600 to 1000%. I double the cost of my materials and add 10% for my jewellery and have no trouble selling at those prices. Hope this helps.

3K & Smart Chicks, I hope I haven’t given the impression that I don’t think there’s reason to take pride in the jewelry we make! I think time & materials ought to be taken into account, and craftsmanship has it’s own value to add too. Boy would I love to get what I think my jewelry is worth!

My problem is mental. :) I struggle to balance a “fair” price for the customer with a “fair” price for myself. I am a TERRIBLE sales person, and very lacking in self confidence! It’s too easy for me to worry myself into a lower price than to be tall & proud of what I do. What I need is a spokesperson to do the selling. Ha, right! Billy Mays here … for only 19.99… and if you buy now get a free…

it took a while to get through all these interesting comments.
Michelle – beatiful pick. I love the greens!!! It’s a shame you can’t sell at school. I left my pieces out in the staff room for a week and a half before mother’s day. Worked out quite well! And I have orders for 3 more pieces!

But I’m sure I’m underpriced. I’ve found that pieces over $50 don’t sell. Most of my earrings are $15 – 20. I know that’s cheap but for the most part my only expense on them is the ear wires. I have learned to base price on the full cost of materials even though I get most of my supplies on sale.
I’m not looking to make a huge profit off this – I just want to cover my expenses with a little extra.

CAS – your work is beautiful. You’ve got to bring some to work!!!

Wow! Great green oasis, and lovely beads!

Unbelievable amount of chat, and I enjoyed it very much as I read to catch up.
I agree that w/ the economy taking a beating, it is harder to set our prices in a way that is fair to us, and still marketable.
Went to a craft and antique show recently, and found so many jewelry booths.
There were high end nice products, and the ones that were selling for less than I could buy the materials and make the stuff. They were obviously mass produced, many of foreign origen, and not great quality. But WE see these things w/an educated eye.
I DID buy something, a lovely hand made ring–druzy qtz. w/rainbow finish–set in sterling. And sure, it cost more, but I went home w/something special!
I also decided that I do not want to participate in that craft fair when they do it again in October. Not my thing.
