Breezy Chick aka Bree says:Sure am a fan… they are just the most beautiful little mesmerizing insects. Here a few little facts that I found very interesting…. Dragonfly nymphs (the first stage after hatching) live in the water for about a year.
When they have matured to airborne insects, they catch mosquitoes and gnats (again…. don’t ask me what a gnat is) in mid-air before devouring them.
While they are underwater they eat mosquito nymphs, tiny fish, and pollywogs. Don’t ask me what a pollywog is though
After leaving the water and becoming flying insects, they only live for about a month.
I’ve never connected the dots before… I’ve always seen dragonflies near creeks and water sources but never out in the middle of nowhere. Now I know why:-) Not only are they beautiful to look at, they also eat those pesky mosquitoes.
Oh yeah… they can also loop-the-loop, hover, and fly backwards.

I have seen them a lot away from water too but you are right about the water. Pollywogs—-ooooo I had fun with those as a child too. I think they are the same as a tadpole??? that are frogs in their infant type state. We had a big waterhole in our back yard and we could swim in it when the water level was right and that is where I remember a lot of the wonderful creatures that fascinated me.
