“Open House (read)”

Description from Luv2bead - Little Chick: This Friday my aunt is hosting my 1st Open House for my jewelry. I'm hoping that some of her guests will sign up to host a party for me sometime too! I will be offering special rewards to the hostesses. Has anyone else ever done a Open House/Jewelry Party? How did it go?

Little Chick, this is a beautiful pick! Love the colors and the butterflies! :D

I haven’t had one yet, but I know that Jeanne/Gem Chick, Fashion Chick, Cotopaxi Chickie Sue, and Debbi/Sparkle Chick all have had successful home parties/open houses. :D

I’m so excited for you, Nicole!!! You’ll do great — I just know it! :D

Good for you! Yes Jill has. she would be the one to talk to! Good LucK!

I’ve done several Home Parties and they went very well. I have great friends and neighbors who have hosted them. I usually have a drawing for a special item as well as giving the hostess a gift. Good luck Little Chick. Sell it all and avoid the work of re-packing and transporting.

Congrats, Little Chick!! You will do just fine. I did mine with my sister who beads and we had such fun! My girlfriend hosted for us in her home and we each gave her a hostess gift. I have seen pics of your creations and feel that you have nothing to worry about! Be ready to receive praise for your creativity and enjoy the day!

    OOOH So gorgeous!! Love it!

I’m really excited for you Little Chick!
    I think you’ll do well!!!

Not sure I have the courage to have a home party yet.
When others try to sell other types of things at home parties around here (tupperware, Pampered Chef etc.) well… they’re just not that well attended.
Most are relatives and I don’t want them to feel like they have to buy something. You know what I mean? Maybe someday I’ll give it a try.

Hey Nicole! I’m so excited for you! You have a wonderful aunt to open her house to you. I had my first (andso far only) home show in my own home two weeks ago. Although only 6 people ended up coming, it was quite successful and I was pleased with my sales. One woman was starting her Christmas shopping early.

You’ll want to have a range of prices so that the person who feels obligated to buy will have a choice of less costly pieces – perhaps earrings or a stretchy bracelet.

I thought a sales pad would have been handy too. The kind that makes a duplicate receipt. That way later on you can compare it to your inventory.

Try to set up your jewelry in a high traffic area. For ex. in my house I had it on an l-shaped kitchen counter and a hutch that was between the food/beverages and my family room. Thanks to Debbi, I moved it there from my out of the way dining room.

Relax, enjoy the compliments and have fun!

I’ll be thinking of you Friday night. I’m sure you will do great!

    Cotopaxi Chickie Sue says:

Nicole, this is a fab pick!
I’ve done several home shows, always with great success. If you get a chance to talk to the ‘audience’ first, tell them the great thing about your home show is that they get to take their items home today, no shipping costs, like other home parties. I like to give them all a little item for attending, usually a silver polish cloth, and also have a door prize. Like Jeanne said, have a sales receipt book handy, so you can write up orders (which give you names and ph. numbers), plus you have a record to tally your sales for the day. Have a great time, and best wishes for a fab sale!

Oh I just remembered – I had some of Sam’s and my own personal pieces out for display only and I had the photos of my jewelry running as a slide show on my computer. Several of my friends from work were there and they had fun looking for familiar pieces. :)

Best of luck, Little Chick! I’ve attended lots of parties but never had one myself. People like games that involves prizes. You can try that. I hope your party is a huge success.

  16. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

Thanks girls!!!!!!!!!! I’m trying to think of a way to give prizes. I am for sure going to do “for every $50 you spend you get a free soap or candle” so I hope that will encourage more buying!!!!!

  17. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

You could also offer a free pair of matching earrings if someone buys a necklace and bracelet. :D

  18. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

You could limit the above suggestion to one per customer if you didn’t want to have to give away too many things.

  19. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

    That’s another possibility!

  20. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Be sure to have several hand mirrors around so your guests can admire themselves while trying on your lovely creations! You can often find nice, inexpensive ones at dollar stores. :D

  21. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

You’ve probably already thought of this, Nicole, but be sure to have your tools and extra findings on hand in case someone likes a pair of earrings, but doesn’t like the type of ear wire you used. I have one friend who can only wear the fish hook style and another who can only wear the leverback style. If you have these supplies handy, you could offer to make a quick switch to whatever they prefer. Also works for simple fasteners on necklaces and bracelets that don’t involve restringing. :D

  22. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

I do currently have one mirror. Do you think it’d be better if I had 2? I have taken supplies & tools to all my shows so far but I never thought of taking different styles of ear wires. I’ve taken different clasps though. Maybe I should buy some leverbacks (so far I’ve only used fish hook & sometimes post).

  25. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

It wouldn’t hurt to buy or borrow another mirror for the number of people you plan on having. A few leverbacks would be a good idea, too, just in case. :D

  26. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to order any leverbacks & still have them come on time but I’ll definitely have them for my show in November. I think I could probably find another mirror at my grandmas (more like I “know” I could) :D

  27. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

I wouldn’t worry about the leverbacks for this open house, Nicole. Just an idea for you in case it ever comes up. :D

    KarenDe-Challenge Chick says:

You also won’t be able to get these in time for this week’s party, but I’d recommend having a few gold and silver clip-on backs on hand, too. I’ve had several people who didn’t plan to buy, but were so happy to turn into customers when I told them that was a possibility.

  29. No Photo
Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says:

Good point Karen. I have one customer who bought the earrings that went with the necklace, but couldn’t wear them. Now I convert all of her earrings to clip on. Luckily I finally found a supplier where I can find the clip ons at a reasonable price.

Nicole – I hope we haven’t completely overwhelmed you. We’ve given you so many good ideas. Take your time to sort through them all. Pick one or two to implement. The best advice anyone gave me was to remember why you got into this in the first and to have fun.

  30. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Challenge Chick – that’s something I didn’t really think about! At the November craft show I see lots of women without pierced ears (who look at my jewelry) so I’ll definitely have to do that!!!!! Thanks! :D

Little Chick – I predict great sales for your Open House! You are so talented you would do well anywhere, but I think that having your aunt hostess your first show will be a tremendous thing!

You have received many excellent suggestions and ideas – Jeanne is right, sort through and use or adapt the ones that suit you. I do love the sugg. by Cotopaxi Sue about reminding your customers that there’s NO shipping involved! That’s a huge discount right there when you consider what most home parties charge.

Just remember us little folk when you hit it big, okay?

And… I LOVE this pick!!! Just gorgeous!

  39. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Sue’s suggestion is a very good one!!! By the time most companies (NOT LB) add on S & H, taxes, sometimes an ordering fee, it really adds up! Plus, most of us love the ability to take our newly aquired treasures home with us RIGHT AWAY!!! I am always so disappointed when I find out I have to wait anywhere from 2-4 weeks to get what I want NOW!!! It can also make a big difference if someone is shopping for a gift and they need it this weekend. :D

    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

Thanks girls!!! Dizzy Chick: I’ll ALWAYS remember you girls and hope to be here on a regular basis for the REST OF MY LIFE (I’d have a beaders block to often otherwise and wouldn’t smile so much)!!!!!!!! :D :D

  41. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Which reminds me, if someone is buying one of your items for a gift, maybe you could offer free gift wrapping. It wouldn’t take that long to do. Don’t offer it, though, if you wrap gifts the way a guy does — with the paper all wadded up and looking wrinkly! LOL Or if not wrapped, maybe in a nice looking, but inexpensive to you, gift bag. We buy ours at a local dollar store and they come in all sizes and colors. You could wrap your jewelry in its box in a piece of matching tissue (also sold there) and tuck it in the gift bag. If this would cut into your profits, you could offer it for an extra cost and a lot of people might be glad to get it for an extra couple of dollars. Saves them the time and effort of buying and bagging! :D

  42. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

You might print out a nice little sign stating that your earrings can be converted to non-pierced fasteners, in case you’re not standing near them when someone is looking at them. :D

  43. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

I was kinda thinking about offering a nice white box to go along with the jewelry if it’s a gift (and then maybe add some ribbon). I keep wanting to get lots of boxes so that I can put everything in a nice box instead of just a bag, but mom says to keep the packaging/display costs down!

I know what ya mean by “guy wrapping”! LOL (btw: I wrap “girl-style”!!!!!) :D

  44. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Do you have a brochure or info printed out about home parties/open houses, custom orders, etc.? Business cards to be put out near all your displays? Your portfolio for customers to look through? I know you have one — just didn’t want you to forget it!

I’m sure we’re mentioning things you’ve already thought of, Nicole. Also, as others have said, don’t let us overwhelm you with suggestions. Once you have one of these under your belt, you’ll know what to do/not to do next time! :D

  45. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

The boxes are a nice idea, too, Little Chick! Do whatever works best for you and doesn’t eat up all your profits! LOL

I suspected that you wrap “like a girl”! LOL ;-)

  46. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

I have the info printed out, custom order forms, business cards, and my aunt currently has my portfolio! Yep.
The only thing I’m waiting for is a fmg order that has some displays for me. However I ordered it last week and it says it’ll come this Friday (day of Open House). It’d better get here on time! My fingers are crossed! ;)

No, you aren’t overwhelming me at all!!!

  47. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Some other “around the house items” you could use for displays are mug racks, vases, an empty jewelry box with your items displayed in it. Did you see Little Round Chick’s idea in the Design Gallery for using an empty silverware chest?

  48. No Photo
    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Lynn, you are a fountain of great ideas, some of which I don’t think of till the moment of need arrives!

I love the white boxes – it looks very professional, I think. I also like the little gift bag idea for an economical alternative, saves time, tape, boxing etc. We have a couple shops that use either plain brown bags with raffia handles (can be had @ most discount stores) or translucent plastic bags (they have a name, but it escapes me) with colorful tissue paper inside. The jewelry can be wrapped up in a tissue pouch & placed inside. Or – the clear or patterned cello bags for kids birthday parties are very cheap, and can be stuffed with tissue & tied with ribbon.

And the store that uses brown bags has a little sticker they put on the bag with the business name/logo, phone #, etc.

  49. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

That’s a good idea, Lori, about adding a sticker with your info to the bags. I’ve ordered from Lynda/Diva Designs (she makes the beautiful polymer clay necklaces in the Design Gallery) and she puts one on the bottom of each of her gift boxes. She also includes her business card with all of her orders. :D

    Dizzy Chick Lori Z says:

Hey Lynn! Lucky you! I LOVE her pendants, and drool over them when I remember to check the Design Gallery! I really like her style of jewelry, but I covet those pendants!

I think the stickers are neat, and much cheaper than ordering custom bags!

  51. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

There are those little sheer drawstring pouches – can even be embellished with beads themselves. They make a nice gift bag!

Yes, they sell those at Hobby Lobby and Michael’s in the bridal section. :D

    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

I bought some at Michael’s recently. Very nice, 50 in a package for $19.99 reg. price, but I used a 40% off coupon. Came in a choice of white or ivory. They are 3″ x 4″, made of organza, and have a ribbon drawstring. :D

Meant to add that Hobby Lobby surely has the same thing. :D

  60. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

It really is and they are very nice looking, too! Everyone I’ve given or sold my jewelry to gets it tucked into one of those bags. If the jewelry is sterling silver, I seal it in a little plastic bag (like we get from LB) first. :D

  61. No Photo
    Luv2bead - Little Chick says:

I guess I’ll have to consider something like that!

  62. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
