More About Petoskey Stone
Petoskey stone was formed by the fossilization of an ancient coral species called hexagonaria percarinata. This coral lived in warm shallow seas that covered Michigan during Devonian time, about 350 million years ago. During this period of time, what is now Michigan was near the equator! The area was covered by a warm shallow sea which was an ideal habitat for marine life.
