“Saving Baby”

Description from The Dud: This is for "Baby" the little black kitten with one white sock that we found in our backyard today. I think he is a week old at most, he still has the umbilical cord stump attached to his tummy and his eyes are still closed. Any suggestions on keeping this little one alive and well?

We found a one week old baby kitten in our backyard today. Eyes still closed and umbilical cord remnants still attached to his tummy. My mission is to keep “Baby” alive and well until he is able to eat on his own. I hope I can do it!

If you don’t have a decent pet store around, check with your vet, I’ll bet they keep kitty “formula” around.

Thanks, MoonBell. I stopped at the Humane Society and got some tips from them. I have formula that I am feeding him every 2 hours through an eyedropper and a heating pad under the nesting box that I have him in. I’ve never had to save a kitten this young before, so I’m a little nervous about this.

That is so sweet of you, trying to raise the little kitten. I find it strange that you “found” it in your back yard. Sounds to me like someone dumbed the poor kitten in the area… Hope I am wrong, but it so kind of you! :-) Hope you will be able to save it. Love this pick too!

Thanks, FaeryGoth Chick. Actually, we have a number of feral cats that come to our yard for food and shelter. We think mommy kitty either abandoned it, or was moving her kittens, we’re not sure. My husband found him crying and all by himself. We don’t know if mommy would have come back for him or not, but once my husband picked him up and brought him to me, I was afraid to put him back in the back yard by himself again. I’ve been feeding him every two hours and this last time I was able to get him to drink out of a bottle instead of an eyedropper. He’s so tiny!

Okay here goes, no experience with kitties but babie bunnies so….you need to keep baby warm. He has no littermates to cuddle with. You might want to go to the pet store and get kitty formula and a small doll bottle or some pet stores carry bottle for you. you will want to offer warm milk test on your wrist and the milk should drop, drop drop from the nipple. If it doesn’t carryfully get a very thin needle or straight pin (Silk ONes work great) heat it over a flame an enlarfe the nipple to the right size. Feed Baby every two hours and you need to rub them near the butt area to stimulate mama kitty helping them to “potty” and clean the babies. Leave the umbillical cord, it will fall off itself, just dab with alchol if it looks weepy or not like a giant scab. Hopefully all will go well but you have your work cut out for you. It may have been the runt so momma may not have fed this baby, but sounds like someone just left it? Oh and they sell micro/teddybears at the pet stores for puppies and kittens. You may want to check to make sure baby is maintaining body temp so you will need a theromoter! Good Luck!

Hope it goes well whit the little one! You have got really good advices here :) Just make sure he/she wee-wee and poo-poo as Dawn said use a pad whit some skin tempured water on and dabb, ‘lick movements’ like mommy cat would do. Another thing would be checking if someone has a cat that has a litter in the same age and see if she accept the little one! Al my good whishes to you, you do a awesome thing!

Awwwww….. how sweet this little one must be! When I lived at home our cat, Midnight, had kittens. Sadly, she was hit on the road and we had to feed and take care of them :( They were probably 3 or 4 weeks old, so they knew how to eat. We fed them with a baby bottle for a short time, and then showed them how to eat from a dish. They turned out fine. It was so sad that they lost their mama, though. But I have to say that Jen and I sure had a good time playing their mamas! Good luck with this little one. It sounds like you got great advice here and I’m sure it will do just fine. Keep us updated!!! We would love to see a picture ;)

What a wonderful pick to introduce us to your new fur baby!!! You sound like an amazing person to take this little one in and keep him alive! Prayers are with you for a happy ending. BTW, I believe this kitty was put/left behind in YOUR yard for a reason — others might not have cared enough to keep him alive. Blessings to you! :D

Would also love to see a photo when you have a free minute or two….. 8)

Oh! I can just hear that piercing baby kitten cry, and I get all mushy. Thank you for taking the little sweetie under you care. Is he/she pooping (with you assistance, as described by Frida?) This is crucial. Good luck!

Ditto Eeka Mouse’s and Dawn’s comments about manually helping the little one to pee/poop. I’ve used a moist rag over my fingertip to simulate Momma’s tongue.

It’s wonderful of you to save this guy. He’s so adorable.

I don’t know much about kittens but I had to hand feed 5 pups from 2 days old…keeping a heating pad under the blanket and feedin them often…it was a wonderful experience but alot of sleepless nights…no one to clean their bottoms had to stimulate with a wet cloth as moms do by their licking..to get tham to go…best of luck with your little one hope it comes out well…..

Baby Update! On Sunday we found mommy kitty and Baby’s two siblings’ hiding place (thanks to Molly our dog who was sniffing around them). While mommy was away we put Baby back with his siblings and all was well. But, on Monday after work when I checked on them, another kitten was left behind. I waited a couple of hours and mommy never came back for this kitten, so we took him in. I took him to work with me yesterday so I could feed him, etc. and, fortunately, found someone with a mommy kitty to take Baby 2 in! What a roller coaster ride trying to keep two babies alive and healthy – but with a happy ending! Here’s a picture of Baby 2.

After rescuing Baby and returning him to his mommy on August 9th, I have just now seen him for the first time since returning him to his mommy. Here is a picture I took of him this morning when I saw him in our yard. He’s all dressed up for Halloween with the cobwebs on his face! I was so happy to see him again after returning him to his real mommy!
