“Seattle Breezes.........”

Description from Smoky Rose: Joyce inspired this without even knowing it - I pulled out a few items to talk with her about and these landed on the table next to me - my fluorite is a little paler (ala Michael's, not LB) - looks funny here - but I'm diggin it in person....

Thank you!…. a happy accident. my rosy white has been sitting since it arrived – too pretty to let sit. I may have found its home.

Sounds like a winner!!! Yup, I have toooo many gorgeous beads to just let sit around too!!!

Sometimes I wonder if I am becoming a bead collector! Hard to find time to work with all my “pets.”

Like this pick, Smoky Rose, and I know what you mean about color differences between LB and some chain stores.
Btw. Are you really a blonde?

  6. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

yes, I’m really a blonde – dark blonde, dishwater, whatever you wanna call it – but yup. (I call it dead mouse brown, myself…..;) )

  7. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Funny that I was picturing you as brunette. Maybe a little projection there since I started out brunette and feel close to you. :-)
Of course, now my hair is more silver than anything, altho’ my 6 yr. old grandaughter says I am blonde. So I guess we are both some shade of blonde. ;)

  8. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

oh, Harriet – I don’t want to lose our bond!!!!! pulled back, like in my wedding pix (and the wedding pix were indoors, it looks darker) – check out this picture from my brother’s wedding…..
My dad was a brunette and I have a lot of his features…. mine is getting darker by the year, so it’ll be fun to see which wins grey or brunette! ;)

Lovely! Why do you call yourself gawky? You are tall and trim and lovely! (And a knockput in that dress!)

  10. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Sorry, sorry, sorry! I meant KNOCKOUT, not knockput. :-)

  11. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

gawky, clumsy, yeah…… mom sent me to ballet class as a young girl, because the docs told her that I would be above avg height, but….. I didn’t gleen as much grace as any of us hoped… I’m sorry, you ladies told me to graciously accept a compliment and in doing so, I respect your opinion. Thank you – thank you much! :) we’re still bonded, even though I have dirty blonde hair, right? ;)

  12. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

with green eyes, although they look brown here. funny – my coworker took the pix in the blue dress at a hospital function – when he gave it to me a few weeks later, I stared at it and stared at it – something haunted me about it, but I did not know what – hit me weeks later, with it propped up against my pencil cup, I was looking at my dad – with my hair looking darker, my eyes looking brown – that nose, that forehead…. I am my father’s daughter.

  13. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Absolutely! Besides, I just thought it looked like a dark honey blonde. Somehow that sounds a lot nicer for your self image, don’t you think?
My wedding pics show me w/short dark hair, and my husband w/dark hair and clean shaven. My kids were not too sure, when they were little, who that beardless man was standing next to me. :-)

  14. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Yes, dark honey blonde is better than dead mouse brown… you’re right. I always go for the cheap giggle… Thank you!

  15. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

do you have any of your wedding pix on line?

  16. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

I’m the one who looks most like my mom. When in high school, if she had to come pick me up for some appointment, kids who never met her before would say, “Harriet, there’s your mom.” She was a very pretty lady, but at 16, I was SO embarassed to look so much like my MOTHER!

  17. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

No pics right now, but Amy said she would help me learn to do that. I’m pretty computer illiterate.

  18. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

of course, at that age – that is sweet.

My aunt says I have my dad’s laugh too – there is a comfort in those similarities with him gone… my little brother, the groom in the wedding pix is nearly a dead ringer for him… he in his wedding pix looks nearly just like my dad in my folks wedding pix, but Mark wears glasses… otherwise, you’d look twice for sure.

  19. Smoky Rose

Mary I am so glad you shared a more recent photo. Now I’ll know who to look for!
    And as Harriet said -”knockout”!

  21. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

    oh thank you!!
I am sorry, I don’t mean to not appreciate the compliments. I’m 6’0″ and in high school was 115lbs w/bad, bad acne – at that age….. it hurt my self-esteem, but I’m trying. Thank you! Yes, Jeanne – this is very recent – I look just like this.

  22. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

hair is a whisker lighter in real life than it appears here, otherwise, you’ll know me to see me – and as the time gets closer, I’ll tell you what I plan on wearing.

  23. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Dirty Dishwater Blonde? Me, too! I really did think your were brunette!! Do you color it at all? Mine is so very dark ash – not complementary to my complexion – L’oreal has me fixed up, though! :)

Love the pick! the lilac-y purples are pretty with the Rosy Ocean Jasper! I don’t have any of that – wish list!!!

  24. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

hey you! you did? yeah, it shows up darker in pix than real life – and oddly, on a rainy day there are red highlights that don’t usually otherwise appear.
I don’t color yet, because of the length -once I’m ready to go shorter, I will to cover some grey and perk up the honey blonde a bit, but at this length (just below my waist, nope, it’s natural)
    Thank you, Shannon!!!!

  25. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

The hair dresser told me Tuesday that if mine gets any longer it’ll be “stringy” – didn’t that make me feel happy?! She took off 1/4” and charged me $45! Yep, just happy, happy… ;)

  26. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

oh yeah, mine’s stringy! :) I got some long layers cut into it last weekend – hair cuttery $15! I’m sure I could find something more flattering, but at this age, can’t pull off the long toooo much longer, so enjoyin’ a bit longer and then I’ll get rid of some length and ‘stringiness’…… It’s been long my whole life, more or less – it’s gonna be a transition – you all will have to walk me thru that drama! ;)

  27. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Just a thought, if you want to lighten up a bit – mix the juice of a lemon and a cup or so of water and spritz your hair before sun exposure (like before your run) – or you can blow dry on high – adds just a touch of lightness and shine! I do this as the color starts to fade out since I don’t like to treat it every other month! :)

  28. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

sounds good! every weekend has been rainy – but sooner or later, the sun will come out (is that a song…) and I’ll get out there and hand wash the car, clean her up some in and out, and I will try that! It could stand a little perking up – and with the blonde, the greys hide a bit – or that’s what I tell myself ;) thank you for that tip!

  29. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

That would be hard for me, too! You don’t have to go whole hog, as it were! just a few inches at the time! And enjoy your hair as long as you like – no rules!!! It really is becoming on you – I have a little mouse face and long hair does not improve the picture. But, I’m enjoying pony tails for the first time since I was a teenager – so long it stays!!

  30. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Grays add a little sparkle to blonde hair! Yep, I’m convinced! Does hubby like it long?

  31. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

that’s twice today I’ve been called a hog! ;) we have baby ground hogs visiting our front yard….. so precious! A mouse face!?!! don’t recall seeing that in your picture… No wonder we’re friends – I’m a groundhog with dead mouse brown hair and you have a mouse face!!!
yeah, when the time comes, I’ll bring it up little by litte. I worked with a pharmacist years ago. his wife had long hair like mine and cut it all off in one swoop – and got soooo depressed afterward. oh my, I’m not risking that – Lord knows! maybe that’s why it’s still long! ;)

  32. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

My hair is below my shoulders too. My hubby likes it longish, and it is easy to pull back for gardening, cooking, etc., or just because of hot weather.
No, I don’t want it long and unkempt, but as long as it is neat, shiney clean and groomed, I don’t worry about other people’s “rules.”
I’m 58 and at my age, I’m pretty much going to do what makes me happy. Some of this just falls into the “Life Is Too Short” column. As in, life is too short to let others tell me what to wear, how to think or what to feel.

I’m going to have to read all this and catch up with you all later. My brother stopped over unexpectedly. Makin’ coffee now.

  34. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

See ya later Jeanne, my hubby wants me to do an errand.

  35. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

I like that way of thinking, Harriet! I have seen ladies with long-ish grey hair, and you’re exactly right – kept in great shape, with a good clean cut and good shampoo, etc to keep it healthy, is a classic, elegant look… maybe that’s where mine will end up – my mom always used to wear a page boy, and I loved that for the clean lines and elegant, everyday elegant look to that.
    Pulling it back is key!!!!!!
Hubby says he likes it long – was startled last weekend when I said I was going for a trim – but at the same time showed me a picture of super short, a little longer than a boy cut, bleach blonde and said mine would look good like that a) no, it would not b) no, it would not c) ain’t happening…… so, I dunno..

  36. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Just popped in briefly: I did the whole “hog” haircut and felt bereft! (20′s)
Kept it shorter for years while kids were little, and had no time.
I have not regretted letting it grow back out. I get compliments frequently; and I know that very short hair was not as flattering to me as longer hair is now. I think we need to do what is right for us.

  37. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Kinda scary – I don’t picture you with the Billy Idol look! Maybe he was just kidding ya? You should go out and get a super short bleached out wig and “surprise” him with it one night – might want to have the ambulance on standby!! :)

  38. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

ok, Harriet, once Amy helps you, wanna see a picture of you currently and your beautiful silver hair, too!!! :) picture – picture – picture! Shannon, jump in here and help me! :)

  39. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

yeah, no billy idol hair here…..

  40. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

coffee, Jeanne? oh, I could go a cup, anybody else? I’ll put on some fresh!

  41. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

oh – meant to ask Harriet if the new baby is nearby enough for her to go see at the hospital….

  42. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Happy – Bet your hair is beautiful – Let’s face it, hair is our own renewable resource – do with it as you like – Have fun – it’ll do what hair does! But huge changes can be a real mental stressor – Years ago my mother colored hers black (she had med brown hair) and was totally horrified!

  43. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

wow, I’ll bet – that’s a big jump. black hair is beautiful, that’s a jump.

  44. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

what did she do, Shannon? lighten it up again or live with it?

  45. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

I’m with Smoky! Pic, Pics, Pics and the sooner the better!

I put a cup of coffee on hold this am for later – if everyone else is having one, guess I’ll join in – I have some Godiva liqueur – can I offer anyone a sippie?

  46. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Smoky, she couldn’t get to the hair dresser fast enough – according to daddy, she just sat in front of the mirror looking all “who is that in the mirror?” – very ‘cracker factory, here I come’! Funny now – then, not so much!!!

  47. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

that’s what that pharmacist Bob told me about his wife – she said, who is that I’m looking at…. oh, well, at least she didn’t have to live with it like that – best she fixed it quickly!

  48. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

any lovers of strong, bold coffee, I highly recommend this Folger’s Black Silk – wow. Just tried for the first time today – my store was out of my regular – oh my gosh! good.

  49. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Hey, have you made your nest necklace yet? I can’t wait for you to try it – it really is easy and so cute – I know you’ll enjoy it! I’ve made four – and I so want you to make one for yourself – it’d look great on a long necklace with chips like you described on one of your earlier picks!!

  50. Shannon aka Silly Chick

Put some Godiva Liqueur in it and I’m there!!!

  51. Smoky Rose

  52. Smoky Rose

I just happen to have some of that – received as a hostess gift, c’mon over, Shannon!

  53. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Me, too! I like Godiva and good coffee!
Just got back. We were checking into availability of water storage tanks to conserve rain water for our yard use.Turns out that they are so bulky, shipping will probably be very high. Going to check w/some local suppliers instead.
Shannon, I totally get your mom’s reaction, only for me it was a bad perm. I don’t do those anymore. Only choice was let it grow out and hope it would elax some from the really tight curls. I just tried not to look at my hair for about 2 weeks!
Smoky, baby Alex is about a 7 hr. drive away so I won’t get to see him anytime soon. I’m hoping for pictures from my nephew or brother. It is so hard to think of the nephew I heald as an infant being a grandparent now himself!
I am not happy w/the 3 nest necklaces I have made so far; OK but nothing special. Does anyone remember the site where we talked about other instructions that were clearer?…I can’t recall whose Pick it was on. :-)

  54. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

OOOOOO…sooooo wish I could! Would love to see your hedgehog!! Are you really out in the country? I’d love to see the PA country-side, upstate New York, Maine and Vermont – I have a romantic notion of apple picking, maple tapping, crab fishing (not eating!) in quaint little villages…A bed ‘n breakfast kind of vaca!

  55. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Shannon, are you way out west, too? I think of everything up in that area as lush and green.

Harriet, you’re right, not worth it with the s&h. we have em, got em locally – they’re the best, that’s all we use for watering, etc! – there’s screens to put on top, so you don’t have a mosquito farm – do you have tractor supply stores where you are? I think that’s where hubby got ours

Happy, Why weren’t you pleased with the necklaces? Mine weren’t as cute as some I’ve seen, but they’re fun to play with! I remember that Southern Chick was the one who asked about them…but don’t think it was one of her picks…I’ll try to find it…

  62. Shannon aka Silly Chick

Boy, am I behind the curve or what? Must type faster….

Happy, I down here in TN – Memphis!!! Very green and wet these days! :)

  63. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

me, Shannon? I’m semi-rural/suburban rural – about 32 miles N of the Philly border. A small, old, old factory town, all but abandon, and now coming back to life. It is very green and lush, we get a lot of rain, a lot of humidity – helps keep everything green and beautiful all summer. the babies are beautiful….. just a little more than a handful ea – there are 3. we’ve been throwing them baby carrots and cut up apples.

  64. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

I think I have a bad case of nest envy! I went back and re-read that whole entry. Thanks again for helping me find it. I think mine are OK, but I loved the looser look of some others and wanted to try that approach. I have a hard time working loose with wire, or even when painting. I actually like detail stuff, but admire what others do as well.

  65. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

I hear ya, Harriet, me too! I’m more acrylic and oil than watercolor!!!!

  66. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Actually Smoky, I suspect that I may be into torturing myself…My favorite IS very detailed watercolor. ;)

  67. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

you’re kidding, watercolor with a non-loose style? you are into torturing yourself – wow! you go!

  68. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

I just enjoy it so much! I once did an exercise in a photorealistic style of a hummingbird (about 6×8″ with wings spread) just to see how it would work. Had to use ink for some of the finest feather details, took forever, but it hangs in my living room today. And Now I BEAD!

  69. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

good for you – I like that style, have tried to emulate that style, but…. I don’t know that I have in the case of watercolor, the confidence, because there’s no going back – that’s why I like oil, acrylic, wiggle room, if you make a mistake or want to make a change… I bow to you – very cool!

  72. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

I am so jealous – you guys paint? No wonder your picks are so artistic! What talent! I quilt, knit, cross stitch, punch needle – the textile arts – HAHA! But I’ve always thought painting was the one true ‘art’! My grandmother painted and I remember sitting and watching her at her easel while she painted…she’d ask my sister and me what we’d want in our woods -we’d ask her to put in a squirrel or some deer or an owl in a tree…like magic, there it would appear!!

I can’t draw, but I always have color pencils (and the water color ones) at my work table to piddle with – joyful!! :)

  73. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

I haven’t done a ton of it since I got married – not a lot of time with the commute….(I spend a min of 15 hours ea week in the car) and I don’t have a space to do it in, in this house…. :( after the attic is done, I’ll be able to set up in one of the 2nd floor bedrooms, but…
I think, Shannon, that is what brought me to jewelry, was the NEED for creative escape – and only need for a small space (part of dining room table) to do it on… Thank you for your compliments – and right back at’cha, sister! creativity is creativity.

  74. Shannon aka Silly Chick

    hi smoky,

I’m jmst catching up w/ this way lovely Pick, the title caught my eye, hah… and oooohh what do I see but fluorite??? along w/ that rosy white ocean jasper, silver and wild orchid pearls, way gorgeous!!!! :)

thanks also for sharing pics of yourself again, you do look wonderful! I know what you mean about being tall, cuz I towered over my other classmates growing up in Hawaii. No I”m not quiat as tall as you are, and also weighed more than my classmates too, not so easy in a state in which Asian American women are usually fairly short and petite!

Been missing Picks chat, I’ve got my “residency” classes this weekend, always busy. I’m also working this weekend too, something I normally don’t on a school weekend. Well, sure is easy too, to spend $$ on beads, I went to a bead shop not far from where I live to pick up some more beads for that “waves” bracelet, and whoa – they have 30% off on gemstone strands till next Wednesday, NOT good for my wallet :)

at some point I too want to try making those “birds nest” pendants, they sure look adorable, thanks for posting instructons again little chicky!

Shannon I know what you mean about the other creative talents – creativity is more than doing some arts such as painting, creativity can be in so much that we do, whether it’s cooking or gardening… believe me, I hear myself in what you said about others’ sense of color, it does take some practice to develop a sense of your own color style. a few years ago I took an excellent workshop on color by a woman who creates colorful bead mixes w/ fun names such as “Green Tea” or “abundance”, she taught us that everyone has her own color sense depending on where we grew up… and to really do whatever makes sense to develop it like maybe keeping a color journal… which I’ve been meaning to do… :)

Joyce Yee, I haven’t been on for a couple of days…and I think I’ve missed a lot!! What is the “Waves Bracelet”?
