Description from B Hughes: It all starts with that cast iron skillet that has been handed down for generations--is used only for cornbread--and is NEVER washed! Some cornmeal, egg, buttermilk, a pinch of sugar, and some hot oil (or lard for the purists) and there you have it--beautiful southern cornbread with a crisp brown crust and a tender inside that you slather with a hunk of butter. YUM!

And now I want to pull out my cast iron skillet, that was my mother’s … and make some yummy cornbread !!! You are so right, about it being best in a well used cast iron skillet !!!!! Oh, and I’ll have to make some beans to go with it… beans and cornbread… good comfort food !!!

MoonBell says:I got some cast iron finally, now I’m inspired! Have yet to try cornbread in it, though. I make sweet cornbread, but instead of milk, I double the eggs and use plain yogurt, my husband won’t eat anybody else’s cornbread now (and it comes out every time even up here at 7500 feet).
