We go to Highland Orchards each year… Pick everything from Strawberries to Apples and pears! Make pies, jam, applesauce, all kinds of things. :) Last year was blueberry/blackberry cobblers!

Fuuuun! I love strawberry picking!! It’s a good thing that they don’t weigh you going in and coming out and charge you for the difference!! LOL ;)

    Yummy pick!
We don’t get strawberries out here for a few more weeks. I love the local berries!

Whenever we get a new foster child, it is so much fun to take them to do this…. most have never been to see fields this big before! LOL! Shouldn’t laugh, But once we had a child from inner Philly and he was afraid to get out of our Van!

I know what you mean. It’s like that when we take our first grade classes to the beach. Some of the kids come from a tougher part of town and have never been to the beach (our school is literally 5 minutes from the bay on the south shore of Long Island) They are so excited to go on a ferry to Fire Island and take their shoes off to run through the sand.

Isn’t it so rewarding to watch them discovering things for the first time? I love hearing all the things you are doing with the school kids! :)

We had some inner city Richmond kids who went to camp for the first time at a local state park and they refused to leave the parking lot..It was funny/sad to see them pitch their tents along the edge of the parking lot…

our reading curriculum has become so rigid these days, that we really fight to keep the fun stuff in. They love learning about the sea animals. In their free time they devour that basket of books! This week we’re studying the different local shells and learning about what lived in them. Makes our field trip so much more meaningful.

I can see how it would be. It is very Strange how they act so tough, but you can see how frightened they are out of their element!

Jeanne, it can be very hard to keep children engaged in learning!

  16. Southern Chickie
    Southern Chick says:

It was such a heart breaker…They eventually ventured out a bit…I took some summer school kids to another park and took my shoes off to walk in a stream and they were absolutely terrified…The water was muddy, but not more than a foot deep. I taught them how to climb the big old trees too! Poor little things. We kind of skipped the “educational” building….oops!

Southern Chick, Sometimes we need to bend the rules a little, to help teach the kids! I so admire how hard teachers work!

Ooooooohhh I love this pick! Brings back happy memories of “berry picking” with my dad, sister, grandma, and grandpa!

I think you did educate them, Southern Chick, just a little differently.
Don’t you think it is sad people are becoming such strangers to the natural world?
As young parents, we took our little ones to lots of places, including national parks like Big Bend, &Yellow Stone. The Monahans Sand Hills, Guadalupe mountains, Red River NM, Estes Park Colorado, etc. were also fun trips.
I know that not all parents can do these vacations, but most cities have parks, that are hopefully still safe enough. I really believe kids NEED to have such opportunities.

Me too happy chick! I just got a high school graduation card this weekend from a little girl I taught in 4th grade! She sent it my old address…That’s the kind of thing that keeps me going!

I know, I still am in touch with some of my children’s friends. We were the house where kids were welcome.
