Once upon a time, by the sea, there lived a girl with red-gold hair and flashing silvery-blue eyes. She spent her days gathering herbs, nuts, flowers and fruits, and learning their useful properties. As the years passed, she became skilled in treating people and animals, relieving suffering and saving a few lives. However, not everyone appreciated her talents. Some were jealous, and started ugly rumors. Some said she had faery blood, and shunned her. (Maybe her pointy ears had something to do with this.) Sometimes the meanness of her detractors got her down, and she cried.
One Tuesday, she heard a tale from a traveling bard about a mysterious tree that grew on a remote island. The nuts of this tree had a lovely haunting flavor, like almonds with a hint of rosemary and lavender. Furthermore, a tea could be brewed from its flowers that granted heart’s ease. She decided to find this plant and add it to her collection. Not only would it be useful, but it would be good to get away from her troubles for a bit.
She readied her kayak, and followed the bard’s directions “Travel by starlight, to the northeast, until you find a silvery shore. Climb high into the islands interior. The tree grows in a protected valley strewn with sparking rosy stones.” It took her 3 tries to find the island, but a year later, she brewed her first cup of tea from the lotus-like flowers from her own small trees. As she took her first sip, a grey kitten danced into her yard. He rubbed against her ankles, mewed “I’ve found you! You’re mine”, and began to purr.
