“The Swallow's Nest”
Description from Mary - Sweet Chick: On our porch we have a colony of Barn Swallows that have set up their summer residence. I keep an eye on their progress and a few weeks ago I noticed something wasn't right with one of the nests. Saddly one of the adults had died in the nest and to keep any possible disease from spreading we knocked the nest down. To our horror we found three baby swallows at pin feather stage! Now what do we do?!
Knowing these guys are colonists I wondered if we could foster them into another nest? There were three nests available. Two had eggs so we decided against those. A third nest was empty and seemed to be unused. So we gently place the trio into that nest and I carefully watched and waited. One baby fell out and we replaced him. Several hours later I noticed an adult visiting and that gave me hope that they would accept the change.
I don't know the full extent of the success. And I don't know if it was the remaining parent or the whole colony that took charge. But I do know that one baby fledged this week!!! And somebody is rebuilding a new nest at the old nest site! Wow! What a learning experience! I'm so glad we made the effort.
