“This is Me”

Description from Smoky Rose: this piece is unfinished.
90% of my pieces are unfinished.
I don't know if it is because I am unsure of myself - if I lose interest after the design challenge is met - or what....
I would imagine A.D.D. is behind it somehow. No, I'm not making fun - I wouldn't do that. I was just diagnosed in the past couple of weeks. (Boy! do a lot of things make sense now!) I've battled depression my entire adult life - and recently, in one of the deepest, darkest times I've known, I found a doc who believes I also have ADD. This dark time is when I found you ladies - and unbeknownst to most of you (I would suspect the wise, wise, owls ie: Anita, etc) could see right thru me - but to the rest who I've been hiding from - you have held my hand thru this odd and difficult time - and that is why I Picked for you a beautiful bouquet at Easter time. I am SO grateful to you all - You've been more help than you know!
Please see this piece.
Yes, it is entirely tooooo long - I have to scale it down to about 26" or so....

Mary, one of my boys has that problem and I tell him things aren’t unfinished but are a work in progress. You are a work in progress, & wonderful things are waiting to come to you. Thank you for sharing w/ us!!

Mary–if 90% of your other pieces are as beautiful as your pick and your pic, find the courage to finish! You are such a joy and an inspiration here :)

    KPJEWELS says:

Mary, I have a son and a grand-son with ADD, so I completely understand your situation. Life is not easy but if you take that beautiful necklace that is in the pic and put a few minutes at a time into it, it will work. You CAN finish it. If you think of it as a work in progress, just like mommycat said, you can do it. BTW thanks for sharing and you have produced a beautiful pick here. Now we want to see the finished necklace next. OK? We’re rootin for you.

    Thank you, girls!!!
This isn’t a lame attempt on my part to be showered with compliments and goodness – you all have already done that.
I wanted to a) stop hiding b) say thank you SO much and…. c) see if I was on the right track at all – pretty much my mom is the only one who has seen my pieces.

That’s a very nice necklace (and pick)! Sometimes I make one earring (that was rather complicated) and then I don’t finish the other one until weeks later! Or I also do that w/ necklaces!

Hi Mary, I think possibly all of us have been there, whether it be ADD or some other issue, so don’t feel alone. When I get feeling this that I always say that things can’t get much worse so they have to get better…which of course, they always do! :-) Your story has touched me. Your picks are beautiful and your wit is great…so thinks will get better and better and better because now that you have been diagnosed, you will have the tools to know how to cope. Like 3KJEWELS said..w.e’re rootin for you!

Mary, you are very brave to share that with all of us. Thank you. Being real with yourself and others can be a hard but beautiful thing, and it’s the only way to go. Each and every one of us struggles with something, whether it be low self-esteem, depression, an addiction, or just difficult life circumstances. But being honest about them is what helps bring healing. I myself have suspected for quite some time now that I may have bipolarism. (Don’t laugh! I know, I make jokes about it too!) But I can laugh at myself and now that I don’t try to hide it from those around me, I feel so much more free and ready for change. The fact that you start a project and don’t always finish it is no big deal. We all do it. (At least I know I do!!) Honestly Mary, your necklace is my favorite one I’ve seen posted so far. It’s BEAUTIFUL. And when you finish it people are going to stare in awe. ;) Keep it up and love yourself unconditionally.

OMG, Mary, you have touched my heart! I think that you are so talented, interesting, and kind you have no reason to doubt yourself. My daughter is suffering from deprssion right now too. It can be an awful thing. Hope that your dr can give you something to make you feel much better. This is an awesome necklace – absolutely gorgeous!! I always wondered what to do with that lovely brass filigree flower. This is perfect – great job. :)

  14. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Ivy – I would never laugh, sweetheart – never. Yeah, we laugh at ourselves, sure – it’s what gets us thru and keeps us from crying, I know. You guys all inspire me – a few weeks back when we were talking about difficult marriages, I wanted to speak up – just wasn’t ready. I know we all have a cross to carry – no doubt! I am far from alone – having a little circle of folks to smile with is how we keep carrying the cross – and not set it down and give up. I may sound dark, but worry not – I’m not giving up! Hugs and Kisses to you all!

  15. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Cathy – thanks! thanks so much! Oh yeah – as a pharmacist, you know – and I’m a pharmacy purchaser in the hospital setting, the doc is trying some different goodies on me – and I think this is where this recent border-line obnoxiousness is coming from (liothyronine+methylphenidate) – so, I’ll you to excuse me while we fine tune some dosing issues. I’m so sorry for your daughter. How old is she? It’s a bear – and it’s a bear hiding it. You don’t want to wear it on your sleeve, of course – I’m pretty private and secretive as it is – but when you find someone who understands, it’s like you just lost 20lbs and your lungs double their capacity!

I too have many unfinished pieces… keep buying beads and findings only to put them away for when inspiration hits… there are a lot of stuff just sitting there waiting… keep thinking it’ll happen with the next piece I get, the next one, well maybe the next one… your necklace is coming out beautiful (I’m not just saying that to be nice) you are almost finished! better sunny weather always uplifts me so maybe you too?

thank you for being so vulnerable and honest about this aspect of yourself, I’m really touched. As others are saying please be kind and compassionate to yourself, you already are with us! I definitely relate to what you’re describing in your long journeys to figure out what is going on with your lifelong depression and difficulties in finishing –
don’t set yourself any kind of “gotta have this finished by…” for that lovely necklace you shared with us okay??? just let yourself work on adding to it as you feel like it, believe me… sometimes I “dash off” a Pick too quickly and then figure later, Oh why didnt I put… and that too… :) … likewise with working on making pieces, one part of me says “why aren’t you done yet?? the other will say “okay don’t rush,…ssshhh, inspiration will come, just trust the process”…
hey Ivy, figuring out any part of what’s going on with us,especially an aspect like maybe being bipolar… no laughing here! I’ve also had periodic depression and OCD at times… it’s taken me many years and some very supportive folks to help ease those shadows…be good to yourself too, okay senorita??
like Mary, I greatly appreciate all the kindness, sympathies and support I’ve gotten from others here!!! :)

And right back to you, Monica.
I know, it’s funny – we don’t ‘know’ one another and yet we do know some intimate details of eachother’s lives. My family knows I struggle with depression, of course – but they don’t understand. Nobody knows about the ADD. My husband denies the reality of depression – not only does he not think I have it – he doesn’t think it exists…… how do you think that makes somebody feel? In many ways he’s a good man, but….this may be a line in the sand with us. I was upfront before we were married – didn’t want to pull the wool over his eyes, just because I was in ‘a good phase’ – but it’s hard getting thru something like this without support. To say nothing of the ADD! I am the villiage idiot in my house – and the villiage idiot to my in-laws – and boy! I am tired of being the villiage idiot. You guys accepted me when I wiggled my way into the clutch of Chicks – accepted me and welcomed me. As such, I wanted you to know the ‘other me’…and wow, it is great, the response, the support, and encouragement. You opened up a couple weeks back about men, as did CAS, as did Ivy and hushed up, listened, and sat here – I think that day gave me the courage to be myself today.
We do have wonderful people here. There is so much to gleen and share. I can’t imagine being anywhere else or with any other folks :)

Thank you too, for sharing Joyce – and Ivy – you call me courageous, look at yourselves! and your accomplishments! Joyce, excelling as you acedemically – Ivy, your children, your business(s) and school! – all while chasing your own demons.

DD – yes, the sun helps, you’re 100% right. This is largely why I love the SW. The love of my life, the one who got away, moved to the SW years and years ago – and introduced me to it. I never felt better in my life – physically, emotionally, creatively…. the whole 9.

  21. Fashion Chick aka SC
    Fashion Chick aka SC says:

Mary, please keep your chin up!! Beading is a wonderful tool to use when the blues strikes because as we create,we smile,we laugh,we believe and all of this helps to fade the clouds. I think that all creative people have a little quirkiness to them and that’s what makes us so GREAT!!!

    KPJEWELS says:

Mary, my doctor recommended knitting for my nerves. It was great therapy. I sort of got away from it and my grandchildren got me into beading and now that is my therapy. Hang in there girl.

  23. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Stephanie! a new face to me. Thank you! and nice to meet you!

Stephanie and Evelyn – Beading is great! Best thing I’ve ever picked up – it keeps the brain busy with deciding on color combos and searching for muses. It’s good, clean, healthy stuff!

  24. Cuban Queen Crazy Chick
    Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:

Yup, just like Stephanie C said, creative people are usually a little quirky or eccentric but that’s what makes us great! Mary, don’t let anybody label you (including yourself!) as an idiot or anything else negative because you are a divine creation and if someone can’t see that, then that’s THEIR problem!! About the lost love in the SW, would it be totally crazy and unrealistic to maybe move down there? Just a thought. I would like to eventually move there too, my father lived there for a little while and said that it was like being somewhere magical, and that it fosters creativity. Well whatever you do, keep beading!! ;)

    Mary - Sweet Chick says:

WOW! My heart goes out to each and every one of you sharing your hurts and uncertainties.
Courage Mary Smoky Chick, courage!! There seems to be a little bit more confidence and maybe even a little defiance in your tone. Hang on to that and find support wherever you can. I’m here, we’re here for you when you need support. I fully believe there are no coincidences. Maybe we found each other here for a reason.
And I do believe you have a devotion to the Blessed Mother? (forgive me, I don’t mean to offend anyone else.) You and I both know what a sweet haven of comfort and help she can be.

  26. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Funny, Ivy – my folks were ea snow birds who moved to the SW – there, they met and married and lived for several years before coming back to the Mid-west and eventually back East. They told me that if I ever went out there (more so than the other kids, they felt, that I’d never come back.) My first trip out there – within an hour, I said to myself ‘this could be home’ Yeah – I think about it. It could happen one of these days.
….and yeah, artists are usually ‘different’ – perhaps some of my/our creativity is borne of the darkness we carry, the pains we carry – I know – and I guess that’s where we can find the good in something bad, right?

Mary, Sweet Mary – yes, the Blessed Mother is with me. Nobody’s offended – I so doubt if they would be. If they believe or not, if they’re warm enough to be reading this, they’ll accept what you and I hold dear and respect it as such. I think you’re right – I think there’s a lot of reasons why this group has been drawn together. I hope I can be there for you the way you have all been there for me these last couple of months!

  27. Cuban Queen Crazy Chick
    Cuban Queen Crazy Chick says:

Oops! LOL! Sorry, got the two Mary’s mixed up! I thought you were asking me about my beliefs…sorry!

  29. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Ivy – looking back at what I wrote, I can see why you would think that – omg! sorry – no mam, you’re right – I would never push anything on anybody – Mary Sweet Chick and I know we’re both on the same page with ‘that’ subject – otherwise, I wouldn’t go there to that level.

  30. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

so many Mary’s – Smoky, Sweet + the Lady upstairs
    - just like life in all girls Catholic school for me – half the class was named Mary! The nun would call on ‘Mary’ and we’d all respond!

Smoky: I had just about decided to give up posting and picking, too, for that matter. It’s easy for me to fall into a hole and have difficulty digging my way out. But I just had to see what was going on today and read your description…I paged all the way down w/o reading the posts. I am SO sorry you’re suffering now! I have been treated for depression and panic disorder for over 15 years; I stopped driving and rarely go out. That there is ANYONE else dealing with this kind of difficulty breaks my heart!!! Wish I could reach through the computer and give you a HUGE HUG! It was brave of you to open up like you did – you are a blessing to others though you may not know it! And though a stranger, you are loved across hundreds of miles!!!!

I promise the days will get brighter. I said it once before and will say it again (even though I’m not the bestower of “Chick” names), you really are BRAVE CHICK!!! Love, Shannon:>

I have someone close to me that is seriousy depressed and has ADD and doesn’t recognize it. It is very serious, but can be over come. Your necklace is beautiful, you will finish it when the time is right.I have peices around for ever that one day I just up and finish it…

To All: Smoky needs support and love and encouragement and humor…These abound through all of you! I have just finished reading the posts…I am utterly humbled. Don’t know how many of you are religious, but I believe the shortest distance between human beings is prayer…that being said, you all may as well be in my computer room right now (boy is it crowded in here!)!! Shannon, don’t give up posting and picking, please! Do you know how much I enjoyed our conversation the other day? Do you know that it was you that I thought of this am before I did this, and thought, Gee – Shannon, I’m not such a neat lady anymore, hu? Please don’t leave – I’m so sorry for your pain too – we can do this together!

Susan Z – funny part is, I haven’t been with these gals long either. Just since late Jan/early Feb. That is how comfortable everybody has made me feel, that I can be this open, this naked. It’s a good place to be (LB, that is) I’m sorry for your dear one who does not realize…. different, but similar to my husband who does not see me. I live in secret – he does not know I see a doc, does not know I’m medicated. I prefer not to be screamed at as though I am a small child – so, I live in secret. That too, I suppose is why I had to tell the clutch – tired of my secret world, I guess… I wish the best for your dear one, that they eventually see – because each day now I feel a little stronger – and I wish that for others in my predicament. God knows there’s a bunch out there. Life is just plain too short.

seems as if part of the creative process does include those quirks and eccentricities that DO make us great artists as Ivy mentioned!!! :)
Well, wish that I could personally hug each and everyone of you! and my best wishes and prayers go out to you my sisters… one day at a time!

I have been living with depression for over 10 years and I do believe my worst days are behind me.

Smoky, Shannon, Joyce, Mrs. Chick, Ivy…to all of you…we are here on this LB blog for bigger reasons than we thought!

    Smoky…beautiful pick, stunning necklace!

I may never keep all the Mary’ and Chicks straight in my head, as I often have a problem w/ names, so apologies in advance.
Smokey, just don’t quit on yourself, please. I have a brother who has done that, and his life is not a good place.
I am so sad you can’t be honest w/your husband. But I am glad you have found a new group of friends who know you as a special, giving, creative person who deserves respect and love. Hang on, there are better tomorrows waiting out there now that you are getting the help you need.

I can tell you have made some good friends here and you are loved. your necklace is beautiful and you will finish it one day-don’t be in a hurry. maybe this is the necklace to help you though one bead at a time. I will say that your pick name should be changed to- this is me. I don’t believe its the other you-this time in your life is part of your tapestry and when its all done it will be beautiful- you just cant see the whole thing right now. I have a bff who has struggled with depression and she went to a very dark pit but with love, support, and some good meds she is coming out of it. She is on the other side and knows there is a reason she was there- to be revealed at a later time. hang in there Smoky Chick, be proud of who you are. I will be praying for you. Debbi aka Sparkle Chick says:

Hi “Q” girls too! LOVE the BE (swirl, tap, buff!) and I must say, I am a Philosophy girl…or should I say “chick”?! I love Amazing Grace the best because it makes me feel so special. The scent just takes me away!
I am going to bookmark this page so that when I need a lift, I can read all of the inspiration on this page…Harriet, thank you…I’m not a quitter so I will hang in there…I’m too stubborn to quit!
You’ll be in my prayers as you face a tough weekend.

  120. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

I’m a limited BE gal…Mostly use Clinique (Bonus Week junkie…Buy about $21 worth and get a neat bag of some kind with a lipstick, moist’zr, mascara, etc, for FREE!) Also love the SW jewelry…always watch that one for ideas and then go straight to Lima! Is that wrong…? Like I’m gonna stop if it is!!!

  121. Michelle Downy Chick
    Michelle Downy Chick says:

Oh my gosh…I’m as addicted to Clinique free gifts as I am to this site.

Safe trip Harriet…you’re in our thoughts! :)

  122. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Good, Debbie! You hang in there!
Love the Amazing Grace – soft, feminine, not overbearing. What’s one of the new ones…in the blue box, smells like vanilla + blueberries? cannot warm up to that one at all. If you like it, I can give it to you at the BEAD RETREAT ;)
We should tell Leslie Blodgett about the BE Chicks! She’d get a howl out of it!
Really though – isn’t it the best? I had awful acne, much better now – still a tad oily. I wonder where BE was all my life. I agree w/the infomercial, if you have troubled or oily skin, how can you put that wet goop on it? ugh! Been BE since May 2004 – no turning back!

  123. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

Shannon, that’s not wrong! Check it out, Carolyn Pollack was on the other day, right? did you see? I DVR’d it – she had turq & picture jasper. Well, I’ve been messing with non-traditional turq ideas for a few weeks – but I logged on next day, came up with a great turq + picture jasper + smoky + …. what else? (Land of Enchantment IV?) Hers was a pendant. I ‘saw’ a super long necklace with mine, wrapped around approx 3 times. – it’s not idea stealing, my love, it is Inspiration!

  124. Smoky Rose
    Smoky Rose says:

OK Girls, I’ve got to scoot again.
    Will catch you all tomorrow.

  125. Cathy H Chocolate Chick
    Cathy H Chocolate Chick says:

So glad to hear that you girls are also addicted to QVC! I have not been watching nearly as much since I found this site. I didn’t even watch Leslie the other day and usually you can’t tear me away when she is on. I have so many eye shadows that I need about 10 more eyes to use them I also love Carolyn Pollack and often use her pieces to get ideas for my own. I love the colors in her rodeo romance. (What about you Smoky?) Now that I have LB I can’t see paying the price for her pieces!

  126. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

Ditto, Cathy & Smoky! Glad to know I don’t have to give up the gratuitous pilfering of ideas from the Q! I’ll have to replace it with another guilty pleasure! Btw: I loved your pick with the Turq! A really long necklace would be so nice – those and chokers are my faves! Oh, and Lariat-style, that, too!

Cathy: 10 more eyes?…I just laughed and laughed – Today, 10 more eyes would’ve been a bad thing – Would’ve had to call Servicemaster to clean up after the flood! Ha!

  127. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

    OK – I’m gonna run for a bit…

By the way, Michelle, got the last Clinique bonus and it had a little baby blush in it – I love it – Bet I can make it last a year…!Talk to you later…:>

I felt compelled to hop in on this conversation…About 3 years ago, I went through a very rough time…maybe someday I will share with you all…Through this difficult stage of my life I “found” beading. It has become my therapy, along with a little happy pill…I have found inspiration through the beads I buy and of course the compliments I get on my designs. I never thought of myself as a creative person, but sometimes I can’t believe what I have created. The Lord works in mysterious ways. At such a low time, I never expected so much joy to emerge. I love this community of beaders I have found on LB!!! Now I know we have far more in common than just beading. Thank you for being such a beautiful group of people.

  130. Elaine aka Belly Chick
    Elaine aka Belly Chick says:

Hi Everyone, just thought I’d jump in and say that I’d bring the coffee and Bailey’s Irish Cream to the retreat! And I really have to laugh at Ivy’s description of a bunch of women showing up at LB door with chocolate in hand (I’d have Bailey’s in the other hand so someone would have to open the door for me)!
Classy Chick, I’m really glad now that you won the Easter Egg Hunt after hearing a bit about your story. It’s amazing the things we all have in common!
    Goodnight everyone! :-)

Jill, so sorry you had to endure a very rough time a few years ago, but it brought you to the therapeutic world of beading…sometimes good things come out of dark times. I think yesterday could also be called “stripping the layers”…

  133. Shannon aka Silly Chick
    Shannon aka Silly Chick says:

When we want to leave a thought or message in support of one another, this should be our page of reference. Jill, so glad you were led to this site…and glad you’ve come out on the brighter side of a dark time! :>

Thanks Girls! You are the sweetest bunch of people. It would be a dream to meet one day at a LB Retreat!!!! Wouldn’t that be awesome? I wonder if there is some sort of convention center there? I think LB should organize one!!! I would be there!!!! :)

Mary Smoky Chick — love your pick and your beautiful necklace! Don’t worry, you’ll complete it when the time is right. I am so blown away by this page –the openness, honesty, friendship. I have marked it to my faves so I can return to it easily. What an amazing group of women we are! Beading truly is therapeutic for me and now I realize it is for so many others. Stay strong and we will all get through our trials together!

Harriet — my prayers are with you during this difficult weekend.

Jill — I’m sorry to hear you had such a rough time a few years ago. I, too, never felt I was a creative person until I discovered beading. Now I can’t imagine my life without it!

Beading retreat + chocolate + Lima Beads + new beading friends = priceless!!!

By the way, I live in Kokomo, Indiana. Anyone else from around here?

We got back late last night, @11:00. Long drive, but glad to be home. My cat was gld to see us, too. We left her inside for safety, and she doesn’t like being inside that long.
Btw. , my cat looks like the one I use for my photo.hmmm…maybe she needs a pick designed around her colors?
