Description from J Yee smart chick: Anyone ever try to grow African violets? I've been unsuccessful over the years, they do take special care, including drainage and watering... :)

Lorrie, thanks for your advice – I have long ago given up on them.

Debra, I know what you mean: right now I have some primroses, geraniums and those charming “hens and chicks” – sempervivum, the ones that are succulents that look like little green roses, and they’re all doing okay – sssshhhh, plus a pot of kale… and would like to plant some California poppy seeds that I have… :)

I say, go for it on the poppies. Love poppies. My garden looks great right now. The roses are in full spate with all the rain we’ve had and the cooler weather. I nned to plant some larkspur and sweetpeas before it’s too late. They’ll start coming up in January……

pretty purply pick! Smart Chick! …no, don’t grow indoor plants (which they would need to be for most of the year).

Okay Debra and DD, I’ll plant those CA poppy seeds soon. Not to worry, I have definitely abandoned those “fussy” African violets, lovely plants but I don’t have the right touch with them.
Lorrie, I bet you have great African violets, my hat’s off to you for being able to raise them!!! :)

This is so lovely Joyce. I used to have African violets and I still love them but just don’t have them. They are a fussy type plant—sigh–so pretty though.

Beautiful pick and photos, Joyce! I love African violets, but have discovered I am better at killing them than growing them. :(

Love African violets and this pick! You’ve got to have an special pot for them that self waters…and then make sure you have them near a window with a certain exposure….which I can’t think of right now….my sweet mama has had African violet plants the size of dinner plates! She has “the touch” with all living things!
