“Wasps on the garage gable!”

Description from Chicky Red-haired Grammy: These bad boys are the honest-to-goodnes huge black wasps that don't so much sting as take a bite, which has been known to bring grown men to their knees. I am able to watch at eye level the constant activity of the hive, which is at least a foot long and a foot wide at the top and was built since we were here mid-June. An absolutely gorgeous construction; the hive is up 15 feet so I have no worries about a lost worker bee entering the house. I will attach a photo if I can decipher how to do it.

Sounds like you have a hornets nest Grammy!
Yes, they can be aggressive if you bother them. But I’ve noticed that they seem to recognize the people that live in their territory and become relaxed and simply ignore those that are always walking by.
Just don’t swing at ‘em!!! ;-)
Beautiful pick you have here too!

I once had a wasp come and fly away with a piece of steak from my plate. I absolutely fear them, but i’m loving the pick Merilee. :)

Mary S Sweet Chick, Wanda and Joyce – You are correct, Mary, this group are hornets; guess here in Northern Minnesota we call them paper wasps shortened to wasps. Wanda, are you having me on about the steak being carried off? That would have been a hungry and huge critter! Joyce, I am not having trouble with them as they are so high up I am not threat to them but I was stung once through a freak happenstance: I was still in high school, we were at our family cabin which had a nest of these black hornet on the eve, I was shaking out a blanket and a hornet flew under my arm just as I lowered it. Ow, ow, ow! As I said, a freak occurrence but I believe my dad did destroy the nest late that night as it was so close to our outside area.
