Some Much Needed Planning

Posted by Kevin on October 27 at 05:08 pm

The Lima team spent most of today planning out the next few months. It was cold and crisp in Michigan this morning. That late-fall kind of cold that you’re not prepared for and takes you by surprise when you step out the door to start your day. After getting our (essential) morning coffee, we all crowded around the conference room table at 9:00am, and started talking. Depending on our role here at Lima Beads, we all have different priorities and concerns to talk about.

Ali wanted to talk about our winter advertising campaign.  With each new season, we try to come up with a new look for our BeadStyle, Bead&Button, and Stringing ads. The next round of ads will come out in late December, which means it’s too early to start talking spring, but too late for a holiday theme. We’re thinking of focusing on silver (and metal in general) because we plan to have our line of silver available by then :) What do you like to see in bead magazine ads? What catches your eye and makes you want to visit a web site?

My big issue of the day was trying to convince everyone that we need to enhance Fresh Picks. I want Lima shoppers to be able to start discussions about specific Fresh Picks right on the Fresh Pick page. I’d also like to have a “My Account” feature that would allow people to upload photos of pieces they’ve made with beads from Lima. If these designs were inspired by a Fresh Pick,  I would *love* it if photos of the design could also appear on the Fresh Pick page. I think everyone would love to see some finished pieces. We made some progress on this issue!

Steve’s concern is improving the navigation of the blog. Now that we have so many posts, we’re going to group them into categories like: Fresh Picks, Product Additions, Ali and Rachel’s vintage jewelry projects, Life, etc.. We’re also going to make it easier to browse the blog posts by author and date. He also wants to change the top of the blog to show more information about things happening on the Lima site *right now*. For example, which items are in the Big Green Bead Machine, how many new Fresh Picks have been created today, and more information about upcoming lunch specials. We all feel that the main page of The Fresh Daily blog should be a one-stop resource for seeing everything that’s happening at Lima at any given time!

It was a great meeting! We’re going to have another one on Wednesday to make all of our final decisions. These decisions will dictate everything that happens at Lima from now until February, 2009. As you can see, the conference table gets a little messy :)

What do you think? Any ideas that can help us finalize everything on Wednesday would be awesome!

    Ali (Kevin and Steve too),
What tends to catch my eye most in ads is color, and than a novel or different way of presenting it.

When I first saw your “fresh picks” flowers I was drawn to them immediately. The fun in picking out from the larger design all of the smaller components, like a mosaic, makes your ads different from many others because of their ability to draw you in, “engage” you. It’s the “oh, I didn’t notice that before” suprise effect that makes them successful (plus a whole lot of fun). And it’s what made me go to your site the first time.

Because it’s too late for the holidays, and too early for spring, as Kevin pointed out, why not the larger design a winter theme – snowflakes, patterned hats & mittens, snowmen etc… or a fantasy theme – an unicorn bedecked in “fresh picks” flowers, a castle with stained glass windows, a tropical paradise etc… I’m sure we “Lima Bead”er’s could come up with some picks for you, or other suggestions.

I just want to say how much I enjoy reading your blog! I like how easy it is to go directly from the blog to the website, but wonder if you could save some room by just linking to the main topics (such as ‘shop for beads’, ‘fresh picks’etc.) instead of listing each bead type separately.

What catches my eye as far as an ad is lots of beads all grouped by color or theme spilling over a big portion of the page so I can drool over them all. Winter makes me think of silvery ice and glittery frost, and your new line of silver just may fit that bill. By the way, I’m excited that you will be offering sterling. You are quickly becoming a one-stop-shopping place.

I also like the idea of being able to upload photos of pieces made with the Fresh Picks and/or beads purchased from you. In fact, all of the ideas on the table sound wonderful!

    Keep up the good work!

Oh, by the way, when will you be offering another shopping spree? Christmas is right around the corner…

YES! Photos of finished jewelry using Fresh Pick beads. This has been on my mind for some time and I am glad to see it is a feature you are considering. Enjoy this site sooo much. I totally agree with Kitty. The “new” Fresh Daily Blog setup looks super, and is extra easy to navigate (not that it was “hard” before). Please keep up the good work, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

I’d love to see a “my fresh picks” tab under the “my stuff” section in the sidebar for easy access. (I’m so lazy sometimes;) )
