You all have my sympathies - just reading all the comments about Whole Foods' seductively yummy selections reminds me of the location in downtown Seattle near my school Antioch University. I've gone a few times with some students from class and we do have to be careful as you're saying with selections, esp. from the vast hot and cold foods bar so that we too don't get unpleasantly surprised at checkout. The first time I spent $11 for a small box of food and a drink! Ah, the dilemma of trying to eat healthy and sustain my wallet! :)

I love Whole Foods! Our closest one however, is in Palo Alto, somewhere between 70 and 90 miles from where I live in Oakdale, Ca., which is in the north-east end of the central valley at the mouth of the Sonoran Foothills. My husband and I have friends there, so whenever we visit we include a trip to Whole Foods. The array of organic foods and fresh produce is a treat. The prices are higher then regular foods, but not out of the ballpark for organic. We don't usually buy prepared foods, so the sticker shock at the register isn't too bad. We stock up on some items that can't be found anywhere else. I wish we had one closer, but we do have Trader Joe's half an hour away.

Here in New Hampshire we have Co-op Food Stores in my town, and they have something similar. The food is "too die for" good, but $$$$$$, as they too charge by weight. It's great for an occassional splurge though (especially their chicken salad with grapes and dried cranberries, yum).
