My First 6 Months at Lima
Posted by rachel on December 21 at 03:27 pmWell, it’s been almost six months since I started working at Lima Beads. I was pretty overwhelmed in the beginning; there was so much information to absorb, that I was certain I would never make sense of it all.
First of all, there are all of the stones. Thousands of them! Some are quite easy to recognize and have very logical names, as you all know. Others, well let’s just say I may have had a few nightmares involving gemstones in the beginning. Soon enough though, I began to remember them. I had no idea that I could learn so many stones, so quickly.
Then there are the stock locations. I have nearly memorized the exact stock location for every product at Lima Beads. Someone might say “Hey, where is the Lemon Quartz again?” and I can immediately reply “5-K.”
Now, I do have one tiny concern with all of this… Where is all of this information stored? What sorts of things are being replaced in my memory with all of this? Most likely, math may have been the first to go, considering I could never understand it anyway
The human brain is certainly mystifying.
Although, I have to say the most intimidating issue was that of our very dedicated customers! I knew immediately that Lima customers were serious beaders and I had a lot of work to do to keep up with them! It was all so foreign to me that it sometimes felt like I may never be able to relate. I feel like diving head first into the world of beading is a bit like moving to a country in which you don’t speak the language. It’s scary and overwhelming at first, but eventually (through some sort of osmosis, I’m sure) it all just falls into place.
I have also, just barely, taken up beading. Now I have really gotten myself into an Olympic sport here, haven’t I??? There are plenty of challenges, but more on my beading adventures later!
All in all, this has been a challenging but exciting six months for me, and I look forward to all of the new and interesting things I will encounter in the future!

It’s only been 6 months and she is already a go-to person around here.

Happy 6 month anniversary! Like beadaholchick, I would spend my time playing with all the beads. I laughed when I read your comment about storage concerns and what information may have been replaced with all you’ve recently learned. This may explain a few things with my faulty memory–I simply have been replacing older memory with the new things I’ve been learning. (It surely can’t have anything to do with old age…)
