What We Woke Up To This Morning

Posted by Kevin on December 19 at 10:31 am

Winter has technically been here for awhile, but it didn’t really feel like it… Until this morning that is. We woke up to the snowstorm that you’ve probably been hearing about on the news for the past couple of days. As promised by weather forecasters nationwide, it hit.

For those of you in warmer areas, this may be hard to believe, but we’re actually happy about it! It means a white Christmas, which is one of the few joys of Michigan winters. For those of us that don’t ski, snowboard, or own a snowmobile, a white Christmas is very important to keeping a positive attitude during the winter months :)

Here are some photos taken this morning from our office window:

2 plow trucks, a guy blowing snow, and a Starbucks. All winter essentials.

Ha! I’ve never seen anyone skiing on a sidewalk but that is so cool! Getting a good workout, enjoying the snow and being “green” all at the same time. This could catch on! Can you imagine all of NYC skiing to work?! lol :)

I’ve walked to work in the snow before, but I, myself, have never skied to work. My Dad and our good friend John have skied to work (Dartmouth College) before, and I often see people in our neighborhood skiing into town.

When I was in high school we had school get out early only once because of a snow storm (we’d have storms, but the school wouldn’t close, just stop the buses running), and two of my friends and I walked downtown for ice cream cones. We then walked home in the snow eating the ice cream of course, we got quite a few strange looks for that. I would never do that now, unless it was for a hot fudge sundae, ha ha.

Okay guys, those of us here in the frozen northwest get to see people sking down the hills of Seattle on the nightly news. check out Komotv.com or Kingtv.com and you will see. I’m working from home (my new DSL) because the roads are just too dangerous. pretty but ice on top of snow on top of ice. Stay safe guys. Electronic commuting is great. bonnie

Kevin, I think you got our snow from Las Vegas, Nevada. National news said Las Vegas got 3.4 but I live right next door in the town of Henderson and we had more than 8 inches on Wednesday. Now freezing temps last night. Stayed home all day Thursday and just beaded my little heart out. You can still see snowflakes coming down when I took these at 3 in the afternoon. It snowed until well after 9 p.m. Add to more great memories of Chicago, my hometown.

Hi Bonnie-lets hear from more of us here in the very cold blowing (70 mph gusts!) Pacific Northwest. Talk is we will (already are?) have record
breaking lows for much longer than we are used to. Grateful that we have a woodstove & that I can bead by candlelight if necessary! Still have some last minute gifts to finish up:)

Hi Beadaholchick – BRRRRR! I really hope that those wind gusts aren’t heading this way (East). We had that bad ice storm last Thursday, snow on Wednesday (a couple inches), snow yesterday and ALL DAY TODAY (14 inches), and we’re expecting another 10 to 16 inches tomorrow (Sunday), with another storm on Christmas Eve. Our trees here in New England are still ice and snow covered, and some people STILL haven’t gotten power back from the ice storm, over a week later (lucky my power only went off for 30 seconds). If we get those winds….OUCH!

I hope everyone stays warm and cosy. Happiest of holidays to all!

We just got another big blast of winter snow and its expected to snow until the year ends. Yucky driving. East Coast – they are expecting the storm to make its way east real soon. Temps in the teens, snow and wind. Oh the fun that is winter. It is differnt to have dry snow and not our usual slushy snow. I5 looks Ok (Wa DOT Cameras) but its getting to I5 that looks like it is the problem. Stay safe and warm. Bonnie

    Good morning!

Kevin, your photos show what the Pacific northwest has been like for a couple of weeks – we got repeated snow storms that blew our way, just like much of the midwest and northeast also got. I too have seen folks in Seattle using skis to get around on icy and snowy streets and sidewalks, brrhh…
Bus service to my neighborhood was pretty marginal – the 3 routes that run up and down 40th Ave. were all on snow routes so many of us were housebound for several days!
We finally have had the snow and ice slowly melt away beginning last Friday, thru the weekend! Now we only have rain and wind storms to look forward to :)
