I live in Colorado and our winters are also way too long. If it weren’t for mostly sunny days getting through the cold weather would be unbearable. The older we get the the less we like it. Family keeps us here. And, yes, beading and making jewelry (inside) are my favorite things to do in the cold of winter.

Hey Kevin and Crew!
I guess I am a wacko but my husband and I MOVED to ALASKA because we loved the weather and the people. Yes, we left our family, but we decided it was a good move for our children and ourselves to try something new. We already had a cabin up here, and we loved coming up for the summers and winters. All we ever did was save and dream about coming here, So we decided, well… why not? So we did. We live in Wasilla, AK on a lake with 3 labs, 1 fish, 2 cats, 2 teenagers, and a cool yellow airplane. We love it cold! We play all the time in the winter.. Lots of fun hunting, skiing (both on plane skis and XC), hockey, and so much more. Plus, you can’t beat our sunsets and sunrises! Absolutely breathtaking! It is worth the little day light to see and look forward to the seasons change. The summers are incredible here, my garden grows about an inch or 2 each day. Our near 24 hours light from mid-May to September means the locals can grow pumpkins that weigh over a ton! Corn stalks that are 23 feet long and tomatoes that weigh 5 pounds! Yeah, I get excited about growing vegies, next to beading it’s one of my most favorite things to do.

My father was in the Air Force for twenty years, we moved every three years, since I was 7. I was born in central Ill, moved to, Neb., Texas, Okinawa, Calif. When my dad retired, we moved to his home town, Amherst, Wi. For the first time I had family, besides my mom, dad, & sister !!! I can’t imagine living anywhere else, even with the wicked cold winters.

Hey Kevin,
I was born and raised in Oregon and moved to Seattle and lived there five years. My husband and I were so sick of the rain and snow and gray days and cold and shoveling snow and living in all the fog, yes, I can go on. Although I did lots of snow sports and loved them, I just hated trying to get warm again and feeling warm. So one day we decided to go on vacation in the winter to a sunny place to discover if we would like to live there. We went to Phoenix, AZ for Christmas and New Years. We tried again in the spring. One day in the winter my husband got layed off work and he decided, “this is it, we’re moving”. We did make sacrifices of leaving family, but we really appreciate living here in the winter while the rest of our friends and relatives live in the North. I also love the heat, I mean 90 is just warming up to where I put shorts on and I do work outside just about every day of the year in my yard even when it is 110. I then thank God for air conditioning. Lots of people move here from the North and people do leave because they just cannot reconcile themselves to the heat.

I’m a New England girl born and bred. When I was young I played pond hockey with my family, tried down-hill skiing (TOO expensive, plus I didn’t like taking the lessons to continue with it), dabbled with cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing, and came to the realization that I DON’T LIKE WINTER SPORTS!!! They’re too cold and require being outside in bad weather (anything below freezing with snow/freezing rain/sleet being termed “bad weather”). I guess that’s why I love beading, it’s strictly an indoor activity during the winter months. Once the holidays are over I just wait for spring, or “mud season” which comes first. The thing is I’ve never thought of leaving New England, even with my hating of winter.
