Autumn: My Favorite Season

Autumn Sunset

It’s that time of year again! Freshly harvested apples, changing colors of the leaves, apple cider, frosted pumpkin spice donuts, cider mills, corn mazes, caramel apples, weekends filled with football and nights filled with playoff baseball.

There’s also a smell in the air that I can’t quite put my finger on. Some would say it’s the smell of dying leaves, which is partly true, but I think it’s mostly nostalgia.

Some of my fondest memories take place in Autumn. My wife and I were married just last fall up in Mid-Michigan. It couldn’t have been a more picturesque weekend. The sun was shining, it was about 75 degrees, and the trees were dressed up in their full Autumn colors.

This year, for our first anniversary, we’re staying up in Northern Michigan for a long weekend of rest and relaxation. It’s a resort about 20 minutes south of Traverse City, the self-proclaimed cherry capital of the world! As cheesy as that sounds, it’s a neat little town that reminds me a lot of Ann Arbor. It has that “artisan” feel, but it’s quite a bit smaller and right on the water. Michigan’s wine country is just a drive down the Leelanau Peninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is also close by.

In between naps, we might find time to play some golf or visit the newly renovated spa. Then, we’ll take the ski lift to the top of the mountain to listen to a couple of the live bands play and soak in the beautiful scenery. On a clear day, you can see the sunset on Lake Michigan! We’re certainly looking forward to creating more wonderful Autumn memories this year and all of the years to come.

Fall is most certainly my favorite time of the year. It seems to be a favorite among our Fresh Pickers, too! There are dozens of Fresh Picks inspired by the season. Just do a search for “Autumn” or “Fall” on the Search the Picks page to see what I mean. I’ve made a pick of my own called “Autumn Sunset” inspired by my vision of how I’ll be celebrating my first anniversary.

I like your pick, and really liked the purple with the other colors. :D Congratulations on your one year anniversary!!! :-)
My husband and I have been married for 34 years and counting…Hard to believe it will be 35 years in 2010. Best wishes for you and your wife.

Thanks for making the rest of us look bad ;) I can’t let my wife read this. She’ll be jealous of your weekend plans and start to drop hints before our 5-year anniversary next summer.

Seriously, it does sound like fun. My wife and I went camping outside Traverse City this past summer over July 4th weekend and loved it.

Our 35th is the end of November. :) The Olympic Peninsula of WA would be my second choice for a place to spend it, after Marquette, MI, on the banks of Lake Superior. :)

Matt, many congragulations to you and your wife on your one year wedding anniversary!!! Seems like not so long ago you were anxiously designing a necklace for her and asking us for input on possible bead and color combos!!!

Regarding seasons of the year, my vote goes to spring, when trees, plants and flowers are “waking up” from winter and beginning to bloom, the freshness and soft bright colors attract me… but I’m glad to hear that you love autumn best, each season has its highlights!!! :)

Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary. Still newlyweds though! My husband and I celebrated our 13th Anniversary this month. We don’t travel much so your trip sounds wonderful! Have a great time and enjoy your time off.
My favorite season is summer. I love the heat. Next is Spring. I love the colors, the new flowers, the smell of newness. Fall reminds me that Winter is coming and I don’t like the cold at all. I do love the color of the leaves in the fall and when the trees on our street turn, I will take a picture of it and post it so everyone can see that Kansas has beautiful Fall foliage! The maples just burst with reds, oranges, and yellows. The flaming maples light up!

My personal favorite is summer. No work, no school, no bedtime…Warm, sunny, green summer days are my love. But, my family’s favorite season would be fall because of Halloween, pumpkin pickin, and of course my husband’s favorite hunting season!

Congratulations on your first anniversary, hope you have a wonderful weekend. It’s nice to be young, so enjoy yourself while you can.

My favourite time of year is summer if it’s not too hot. I don’t like extreme temperatures. I do enjoy spring because everything is so clean and fresh. I love the fall when all the leaves are in full colour. Winter is my least favourite. I’m getting too old to like the cold anymore, so, I usually hibernate pretty much in winter. LOL.

Congratulations on your first wedding anniversary, Matt!!! :D Such an exciting time in your life! I hope the two of you have a wonderful trip!

Our anniversary is in March and we will be married 35 years in 2010. Hard to believe the time has flown by so fast. Spring has always been my favorite season! I love the fresh, clean smells and colors, the newness and rebirth of everything — it symbolizes hope to me. :D I love the colors traditionally associated with Fall, so I do look forward to it for that reason, but not because Winter is coming. Brrrrrrr. Not a cold weather fan at all. Summer has its good points, too — fresh fruits and veggies, walks outside, sandals with pedicures. LOL I guess each season has something good and fun to offer — such as new beads and jewelry to make!!! :D

Congratulations to you and your lovely wife, Matt!

Some of my favorite memories are autumn memories, too. Being a Texan, fall never meant much to me. I’d read about it in books, of course, but it really doesn’t happen here in Central Texas. It’s just not quite as hot, I guess….

I lived in central Indiana (Greencastle) for 12 years. That’s where my children were born and spent their early years. I made adorable hand-smocked clothing for them and photographed them in the “fall foliage”. I lived in a pre-1886 house with lovely high ceilings and a wrap-around porch. My best memory is inviting my best friend and her daughter to come over for the “last warm day”. It was a tradition that usually occurred during the first week of November. I would make home-made pizza, and we would sit on the porch eating pizza and drinking wine into the wee hours, appreciating the warm evening and beautiful sugar maples. Usually a cold front would arrive later in the week, and I wouldn’t go out on the porch again until April or May. Those memories are so precious to me. Now I’m back in Texas where I enjoy warm sunny days the year ’round. I still appreciate the “last warm evening of the year”, though.
