Scream Week: Fresh Pick Contest

Posted by Steve on October 25 at 01:56 pm

Hulk SmashPart of the fun of Halloween is to show off your creepy, creative ideas… from decorations to costumes to jewelry. If you’re feeling extra creepy this year, then this contest is for you! The rules are simple, and the prizes are sweet (even sweeter than junior’s Halloween candy).

Make a Fresh Pick and Win

Conjure up those ghost stories, costumes, and creepy color combos… and make a Fresh Pick to share them with everyone! We’ll pick 4 winners from the Fresh Picks submitted as a comment to this blog post (instructions are below). One winner will be chosen for each of these four themes:

  • Best Composition: The overall composition is one of the most important qualities of a beautiful Fresh Pick. Creating the best possible color & texture arrangement (with a Halloween theme, of course) is key to winning this category.
  • Coolest Costume: Were you a crayon? A princess? A robot? A superhero? Show off by making a Fresh Pick inspired by your costume idea. Sure, colors are important… but try and tell more about the costume through the items you choose.
  • Scariest Story or Poem: Everyone loves a good ghost story (*ahem* most of the time). We’ll read your description that you add to your Fresh Pick. It could be a scary story, a tale about your favorite childhood Halloween memory, a poem (that you write yourself), or pretty much any type of Halloween prose.
  • People’s Choice: We’ll total up the number of favorites that each Fresh Pick entry receives… and the one with the most favorites will be the People’s Choice winner! Make sure your vote is counted by going to the Fresh Pick and marking your favorites.

Now, for the important part… :)

Annie OakleyThe Prizes

The winner of each theme will receive a $25 Lima Beads gift certificate. You can use it to buy anything from our shop!

When you’re ready to submit your Pick, just select it from the drop-down menu in the comment form below. You’ll be able to choose from your 10 most recent picks. Choose the one that you’d like to submit to the contest and “Voila!” Not sure what a Fresh Pick is? Find out how to Design Your Own Fresh Picks!

Here are a few final ground rules before you get started:

  • There will be 3 submissions allowed per person. If you make more than that, only your most recent 3 will be counted. You don’t have to match your picks with the themes above–you can do all costumes, all stories, or a mix of everything. Just remember, 3 is the limit!
  • All Picks must be submitted as a comment on this blog post by Wednesday, October 31st at midnight.
  • You can win up to one gift certificate per person.
  • The Lima Beads team will pick the winners on Thursday, November 1. The People’s Choice winner will be selected by the number of favorites received. The winners will be announced here on the blog.

OK, get picking! Good luck!

Calling All Spooky Designs & Picks!

Posted by Kevin on October 18 at 02:31 pm

Halloween is almost here, which means that Scream Week will be starting soon at Lima Beads. As usual, we’ll have some fun & spooky things planned, but we need your help! We want to showcase Halloween themed designs and fresh picks and maybe even have a little contest…

We need your designs!

When you’re ready, upload your Halloween-themed jewelry designs to the Design Gallery and/or create your spooky Fresh Picks. Be sure to select “Halloween 2012″ during the process so we know to include it in the Scream Week festivities :) If you’ve never done this before, don’t worry–it’s super easy. You can make sure your Fresh Pick is part of the “Halloween 2012″ promo right from the My Fresh Picks page. And for designs in the Design Gallery, you’ll see that choice right on the form you fill out to upload your design.

I’ll leave you with a picture of a few spooky designs and picks from last year… and get ready for another fun week!

Fossil Day 2012 Sale

Posted by Steve on October 17 at 08:00 am

I was seven years old when I went to school and told my second grade teacher that I wanted to be a paleontologist. I don’t know if it was the books, the movies, the Discovery Channel, or the inflatable pterodactyl in my bedroom… but something about fossils and dinosaurs was fascinating to me.

So, I didn’t become a paleontologist, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work with fossils every day :) And there is no excuse not to celebrate National Fossil Day on October 17th here in the US. For three days only, we’re putting all fossils and fossil-like items on sale! This includes a bunch of fossil coral, turritella agate, ammonite, and more up to 20% off. Fossils might last, but these prices won’t! The sale ends Friday night (Oct 19) at midnight.

Check out the items on sale!

Fossil Day 2012

Encourage Curiosity and Creativity!

Resin or Dinosaur Eggs?

Leftover resin? Or dinosaur eggs??

For me, it started with curiosity about T-Rex and his pal Stegosaurus. For someone else, a passion might be sparked by an art exhibit, film festival, math problem, or a mountain range. The other day, I found some leftover resin from Kate’s Wine Party project and it reminded me of dinosaur eggs captured in time. You never know what will inspire you! Head over to the National Fossil Day website to learn more, and check out the items on sale today thru Friday.

The Re-Purposeful Life

Posted by Kate on October 04 at 01:12 pm

I’m not one to go out and buy the latest and greatest. My friends are amazed I still don’t have a “smartphone” (at least not quite yet!) because my old flip phone still works, why would I need a new one? And I tend to wear the same sneakers until the sole comes apart. And I’m driving an old 1997 Honda Accord (because “Hondas can go til 250K at least!”). Using things until they don’t work any longer is something I inherited from my father (thanks, Dad!). My mother has taken my desire for usefulness to another level, however, and tapped into the other side of the coin: re-purposing.

Re-purposed items

Mom recently sent me an email with some creative ideas on how to re-purpose things that may have fallen out of use the way they were originally intended. I thought I’d share some of them with you here, since we’re of the creative “think outside the box ” type. See anything you might find re-useful? :-)

This will come in handy for our craft, right?!

Lima Outside-the-Box

All this re-purposing got me thinking. How can we re-purpose some of our left over beads that didn’t make it into a project? Ali took some of her odds n’ ends beads, strung them up to create a multi-layer bracelet with that new McLees clasp and she did it again using orphan beads in her leather cuff charm bracelet. What about ways to use beads in other non-jewelry ways? (Gasp?) I asked some of our warehouse packers what they would use our pave collection for, if they weren’t beaders. Here’s a few of their ideas:

  • center piece — fill a small vase as a sparkly centerpiece to come home to on your kitchen table! Buffer tea light candles with pave beads to catch more sparkle during dinner.
  • ponytail holder — tie two pave beads into an elastic (Boston way of saying hair tie/ponytail holder/rubber band) for the Punky-Brewster-style look. A chandelier-like throwback to the 80s!
  • flower pot sparkle — toss a few pave beads into your potted plants so when they catch a bit of sun for photosynthesis, they’ll also catch a little additional sparkle. Match ‘em to the bloom or pick a contrasting color for a little more zing.
  • pen topper — I’ve seen folks create beautiful flower petals out of feathers or even scrap quilting material and then adorn the top of a pen or pencil with the topper. Ever thought of using a pave bead for the “pollen center” of your flower design?
  • charm & ring set

see, I even re-purposed the chip clip into a vice! Click to see in the Design Gallery!

wine charms — Little charms like this have been all the rage lately. The problem I tend to experience (and several of my co-workers agree): who can remember what their charm was after all that wine drinking?! So warehouse-picker-extraordinares, Kathleen and Kat, came up with this idea… Take one of our little bezeled adjustable rings and sprinkle some matching glitter in that bezel with some resin. Volia! Just look down at your finger to remember which charmed glass matches!

I guess the famous Shamballa bracelet isn’t the only way to put those paves to work, eh? What’s your favorite “re-purposed” invention?

If you’re feeling sinister…

Posted by Kate on September 27 at 12:04 pm

Truth Time

Halloween is not my favorite holiday. I liked it alright as a child, but I was clearly just in it for the excitement of being allowed to stay up after sundown and collecting FREE Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Now that I can stay up as long as I want any day of the week and I can buy those little magical PB cups during my weekly grocery trips… the holiday has lost some allure for me. But the rest of the Lima Team seems to like the theme quite a bit and I’ve been told I better gear up for something called “Scream Week” (coming soon). I can get pretty jumpy around haunted houses, cemeteries, dark basements… so Scream Week is making me nervous!!

Scary Movies

As you probably can guess after that paragraph, I do not care for scary movies much either. I’ve always considered this a consequence of getting very wrapped up in the story the filmmaker is trying to tell, and when you mix suspenseful scenes with suspenseful music, I’m definitely going to jump a mile when the surprise comes! I know that’s what the filmmaker intends, but I like popcorn too much to keep spilling it all over my couch! However, I can get on board with at least one Halloween-themed movie. My favorite is Hocus Pocus. Bette Midler? Love it. Sarah Jessica Parker in her early days? Refreshing. Talking cat? Wonderful. Set in historical Salem, Massachusetts? Count me in for a nostalgic 90-minute trip to Spookytown. But when it comes down to it, I’m sure I only like the movie because there is some Disney-like musical numbers, including a great rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “I Put A Spell On You.”

While I’m not always on board for the jump-out-at-you scary, I can appreciate a spooky mood. I created this little Fresh Pick to kick off the “Halloween shopping season.” I like the deep reds and blacks paired with a little hint of lighter blue and white hues– the lighter colors remind us that there is good out there, even in the midst of threatening wickedness. [insert count dracula laugh here]. This fresh pick is intended to inspire you all to start thinkin’ spooky in preparation for Scream Week 2012! Word on the street is that the residents in your favorite trick-or-treating neighborhood have been stocking up. Here are some spooky beads and charms to whet your appetite. Stay tuned!

Guess the Beads Winners Announced…

Posted by Matt on September 14 at 10:35 am

We have our winners for the How Many Beads in the Jar? contest! R Rushka has just won all of the beads in the jar! We didn’t realize it when she first added her comment, but her guess of 1534 was exactly right!

The winner of the $25 Gift Certificate is SCW Designs with 1531! Just over an hour and a half after we posted the contest, I thought for sure her guess would last through the weekend and that she would be the winner of the beads on Monday.

We’re hoping to do more contests in the future, so stay tuned to the blog and our email newsletter for announcements. Thanks so much to everyone who participated and congratulations to our winners.

How Many Beads in the Jar?

Posted by Matt on September 13 at 12:01 pm

If you guess exactly how many beads are in the jar, we’ll give you the entire contents of the jar!

The rules are simple:

  • You have until 12pm Eastern Time on Monday, September 17th, 2012 to make your guess(es).
  • Guesses can only be submitted in the comments of this post.
  • The winner will be the closest guess (without going over).
  • If there’s a tie, the earliest entry will be the winner.
  • You can guess up to once per day. At the end of the contest, only your most recent guess will be considered.

The Prize

The winner will receive the entire contents of the jar. There’s no way of knowing the exact dollar value, but guesses around the office have been between $200-$350! Just look at the photo and you’ll see just how much cool stuff is in there! There are agate slabs, pearls, crystal, coral roses, cubic zirconia, lapis, pyrite, fire agate, and much, much more. The winner will also be announced here on our blog by the end of the day on Monday, September 17th.

Also, the first person to guess within 25 beads of the actual amount (either over or under) will receive a $25 gift certificate, so hurry and start guessing, but remember — you only get 1 guess per day!

Back into Beading

Posted by Kate on August 30 at 01:43 pm

Hi All! Kate here. I’m the newbie here at Lima Beads and this is my first blog post. (You can read more about me and where I come from on my bio page). Today I wanted to introduce the inspiration behind this week’s Tip & Technique: the Simple Knotted Leather Cord Bracelet.

I just recently created and posted my first Fresh Pick and was really struck by the Lima Community and their encouraging words regarding my pick. (Thank you!) The truth is, I haven’t done much beading lately– not since high school when my hippy friends and I spent Friday nights in someone’s parents’ basement making hemp necklaces and listening to Phish or Dave Matthews or Smashing Pumpkins (OK, I know that last one wasn’t very hippy-esque, but we liked Billy Corgan’s voice). What are your earliest memories of pursuing “the craft”?

Watch "The Simple Knotted Leather Cord Bracelet"So, after working here at Lima for a few weeks, I’ll be honest, I’ve been blown away by the creativity flowing through your fingers in the Design Gallery and Fresh Picks! I asked Ali what would be the next step for me, acknowledging my limited experience in hemp all those years ago, and she suggested a leather cord bracelet. It’s simple enough for me to do :-) AND Ali’s years of experience point out some great tips for anyone who’s using the knotted technique or working with leather cord in some other way.

We made this video after our chat about the technique. Check it out! And I’d love to hear about your earliest memories of jewelry making!

Pantone Colors for Fall 2012

Posted by Ali on August 16 at 02:00 pm

Alright Lima Beaders! We’re ready to delve into this magical and mystical thing called Fashion Week. “What? This is a beading website!” you might be thinking, but Fashion Week does have a certain relevance to our humble age-old craft: color schemes.

Fall Fashions: Pantone Color Report

New York Fashion Week was way back in February, but at the time we had no intention of thinking about the Fall. Ew, here in Michigan with all its sloppy, soupy snow in February (it was a mild winter, but winter nonetheless) if anything, we were dreaming of Spring. But now the Autumn season is upon us. (I know because I’ve started buying all the back-to-school pencil cases, lunch boxes, and back packs for Payton.) And now I feel it’s an appropriate time to start matching the new Fall Fashion colors with some of our offerings here at Lima Beads.

I wanted to be really selective when matching these colors. For example, when you see Bright Chartreuse in the Pantone chart, you’re not going to see every green thing we carry. You’re going to find the best components for creating something with this color scheme in mind. I also tried to group some of our multi-colored beads conveniently so you can instantly recognize how hip these beads will be in your new Fall creations.

New Designs

My sense of design and style drew me in to these Pantone colors because of the versatility of the colors. There are some great accent shades–Tangerine Tango? Pink Flambé? Some wonderful neutrals (“blendy” as Payton might say)– French Roast and Titanium. As well as some “cool” yet bold hues to work with– Ultramarine Green and Rhapsody.

Lately when designing, I’ve been really drawn to the raku by XAZ. It’s going to pair extremely well with the Ultramarine Green, Titanium and Honey Gold. Of course I would need to throw in a Turquoise and few rusty harvest colors to make it pop – maybe from some boro glass beads of Sea Shore Glass or some carnelian and amber. It’s always fun to have something new to play with and I feel like the possibilities suggested by Fashion Week 2012 for the Fall are nearly endless. What strikes your fancy? I’d love to see some ideas from you! Fresh Picks anyone?

Ann Arbor Art Fair!

Posted by Ali on July 19 at 12:58 pm

Greetings all, from the Ann Arbor Art Fair!

Aly's booth

My apologies for not unveiling a new Tip or Technique this week, but I’ve been super busy unveiling my jewelry at the 45th annual Ann Arbor Art Fair at State Street. If you’re in town this weekend, please come on by and say hello! We’re camped out on the strip of S. State Street, between E. Liberty and E. William. (Right across from local watering hole, Ashley’s– and they’ve been tempting us with hot dogs and beers–sounds like Summer to me!)

Ashley's hot dog booth

I guess it is possible that I am giving away all my trade secrets by broadcasting this, but many of the designs I’ve shared on Tips & Techniques, as well as in the Design Gallery, are beautifully laid out on my table in this sweltering heat. (Big thanks to my little sister who came up from Florida to hang out with me and haul loads of necklaces, bracelets and earrings downtown).

Sister, Lauren

Did you love learning the Ladder Stitch from this video? That piece is here! The Transparent Resin Frame tutorial turned into these cool earrings, also displayed at my humble table. Boardwalk at Twilight bracelet? Got ‘em. Garden Droplets? Check.

frame earrings

This isn’t just one big advertisement for my super-awesome booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. :) But I wanted to let you all know where I have been for the past few weeks (longer if you count all the hours crafting!). Do you participate in Art Fairs? They are a lot of work! As somewhat of a veteran at this point, my number one tip is to always always put your sparkly pieces in the sunlight (eye catchers!) and of course, have a card with your name, contact info, AND location in the fair. Seems simple enough, but those simple things are the easiest to forget sometimes! Those are my tips, but I like to consider myself a life-long learner, so I’d be curious to know, what is your #1 Best Advice when hitting the Art Fair circuit?

The Big Green Bead Machine is Mobile!

Posted by Matt on May 01 at 11:53 am
Big Green Bead Machine on iPad

Here it is on an iPad

Over the last few months, we’ve been hearing a lot of people asking us to let them shop the Big Green Bead Machine on their iPads, smartphones, and computers that don’t have Flash installed. Well, a couple of weeks ago, we did just that.

One of the goals of our new website was to make sure that everything looks and works on mobile devices just as well as it does on our desktops and laptops. Now that we’ve updated the Big Green Bead Machine, every product is shoppable, every video is viewable and every page is accessible from your smartphone or tablet.

How Lima’s Big Green Bead Machine Works

For those of you who prefer to think of what we do as “magic” and don’t really care exactly how this stuff really works, you can tune out now. :)

When we first developed the Big Green Bead Machine back in February of 2008, the iPhone was just over a year old and nobody had ever heard of an iPad. Back then, we had to use a technology called Flash to build  interactive features on our site. Now that iPad and smartphone usage is on the rise, Flash is one of those things (along with mice) that is being left behind in what Steve Jobs called the “Post-PC Era.”

Most of the new web browsers out today allow you to build things that are pretty and interactive without the use of Flash. In fact, even Adobe, who owns the Flash technology, has decided to move away from it in lieu of these new browser technologies.

Now that we’ve removed the Big Green Bead Machine’s dependency on Flash, you can use it just about anywhere.

Over the last two years, look at how much mobile web browsing has grown! In March 2012, 13% of all visitors to our website were using a mobile device. Last March, it was 5% and March of 2010 was 1%. What do you think these numbers will look like in 3 years?

We hope you like this update to the Bead Machine. If you have any questions or feedback, feel free to leave a comment!

What’s Fresh?

Posted by Steve on April 26 at 12:09 pm

What's Fresh at Lima Beads?Today, we’d like to announce a new feature on our website that we think will make it easier to stay on top of everything that’s going on at Lima Beads. We’re calling it What’s Fresh and you can find it by clicking the “Fresh” option at the top of the website. We really hope you like it.

What’s the big deal?

I’ll be very honest with you all. With the hundreds of Fresh Picks, design ideas, tips & techniques, new products, restocks, and more that happen here every month, it’s really hard for us to keep track of it all. So we started thinking of ways to combine it all into one easy view, organized by date. We’re thrilled with the results.

When we were creating this page, one thing was abundantly clear: we have our customers to thank for so much of what goes on around here. We’re grateful for everyone’s willingness to share their design ideas, Fresh Picks, comments, pictures, and more. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Your feedback is important to us!

As always, we would love your feedback on the new What’s Fresh page. You can leave your comments below!

Spring Rain Wrap-Up

Posted by Steve on April 18 at 05:20 pm

Well, it’s on from one thing (Easter Egg Hunt) and onto the next (Spring Rain Contest Wrap-up). The winners have been selected… and you’ll find the results below.

The Winners

There were 50 Spring Rain designs submitted, racking up over 700 “Add to Favorites!” Based on the number of favorites and activity, here are the three winners of the Vintaj Spring Rain contest:

First Place: Spring Rain – Dance in the Rain by JustImagine – Val

From the designer:

“Made from the Spring Rain Necklace Kit. I did a little play on words and made my own “Spring(s)” for this design. This was so much fun!”

This was by far your favorite design in the contest. Not only were there a ton of favorites, JustImagine – Val also received a lot of praise in the comments. Here are a few comments:

“Very beautiful and creative. A one of a kind piece.” – R Grizzuto

“Absolutely stunning! The “springs” are a wonderful detail! I love the colors!” – Violet D

This is such a beautiful piece and so creative. I would love one just like it. And the photos to display it were very unique. Good luck, Val!

Second Place: Raindrops & Posies by D Beach

From the designer:

“The thing that I love most about Spring rains, is how the lingering raindrops seem to bring out the beauty and color of the flowers. I wanted to create a bracelet that combined the beauty of raindrops and flowers.”

Designer D Beach mentioned in her comments that this was the first time she entered a piece into a contest! So much for practice makes perfect… :)

Third Place: It’s Raining, It’s Pouring! by Bucci Handmade Jewelry

From the designer:

“I made this piece for the Vintaj Spring Rain contest. I made dangles of all the glass and pearl beads and hung them from some Arte Metal chain. The simple S-hook clasp allows you to adjust the length of the necklace to suit your desire.”

The pearl and glass drops in this necklace are the perfect metaphor for the “Spring Rain” theme. It’s great to see how far super-creative people like Bucci Handmade Jewelry can push the limits of a basic kit.

All of our winners will be contacted shortly with their gift certificate codes. Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest, and we want to give a special thanks to Vintaj. This was our first time working this closely with them, and we hope that you had as much fun as we did! We’re looking forward to working with them again in the future.

Lima is Vintaj’s Online Bead Partner This Month

Posted by Kevin on April 10 at 03:12 pm

Vintaj called us early this year and asked us to be their April online bead partner. They wrote a nice blog post about us and posted some photos of Ali’s work. You can see it here:

This was exciting! We’re really enjoyed working with Vintaj on the Spring Rain promotion this month. They’re a talented group of people!

Easter Egg Hunt Winners

Posted by Steve on April 09 at 07:05 pm

The 2012 Easter Egg Hunt was a crazy ride! 4,338 people hunted for eggs and every egg was found at least once this year. I’d like to announce the winners and address some of the concerns from this year’s hunt.

The Winners

First of all, congrats to the winners of the 3 $25 “Golden Egg” gift certificates! Here are the winners:

  • GypsyMom
  • Jeanne S
  • B Miller

If you’re one of the three winners above, we’ll be sending you a gift certificate by e-mail. Congratulations!

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The winner of the $250 Lima Beads gift certificate is… J Pilkington! She found a total of 77 eggs, which put her in 9th place on the leaderboard with a chance to win the big prize. You can watch the video of how we picked her name on Facebook. Congratulations, J Pilkington!

The Second Prize is a $100 Gift Certificate, awarded to Snowy, who was in an 8-way tie for 65th on the leaderboard with 55 eggs found.

Congratulations to you both! We’ll contact you directly with your prize.

The Golden Eggs

We never imagined how quickly the golden eggs would be found this year. We thought the hiding places were super hard! Here’s a picture of where the three golden eggs were hidden:

The pictures above show the golden eggs on the following pages: the 12mm Winter Shell Pearl Mix, a search for “golden egg”, and on the “Add to Fresh Pick” screen for the Abalone 1″ Silk Ribbon. Congrats to those who found the golden eggs first. We’ll contact you directly about your prize.

The Hardest Hunt Yet…

It’s been widely publicized that the hunt was more difficult this year than last year. We agree! We thought it would be a nice surprise to launch a new web site for the hunt, but doing so made the eggs difficult to find. We weren’t able to gauge how good our hiding places would be because we hadn’t had a chance to spend much time on the new site. As it turns out, they were very good hiding places. We’re sorry it was so difficult. We hope that the extra prize helped and YES, it’ll be easier next year :)

Shipping Fees

Some people expressed displeasure with the shipping fees. Our goal is to make the Easter Egg Hunt as cool as possible, and we wish we could ship the prizes for free–but we just can’t afford to. We always put a statement in the rules about how normal shipping rates apply to set expectations, but some people were still disappointed–and we want you to know that we totally understand. We know it’s not the cheapest thing out there (in fact, it costs us MORE than the $4.95 we charge you). Even though it’s a little more expensive, we keep using USPS Priority Mail because it’s fast and trackable. It wasn’t the most popular choice, but rest assured that we are never out to make money on shipping fees.

Thanks Again!

Even though it was hard, we hope that everyone had fun finding those blasted eggs. We’re turning our attention to the rest of 2012 now, and we have some awesome things in store. One thing is for sure… we think we have the best customers on the planet, and we’ll continue to try as hard as we can to put together fun & crazy promotions for everyone to enjoy. Thanks again for making this the most exciting week of the year for us, and keep your eyes on the blog for more fun in the future.

Special Buy Alert: Crystal and Shell Pearls!

Posted by Kevin on April 05 at 12:38 pm

There’s a bunch of crystal and shell pearls that just got added to the special buy section. Special buys happen at Lima Beads for a number of reasons. In this case, some of the items in a shipment didn’t match the colors of our previous stock. We’re very picky about the color consistency of our crystal and shell pearls. So, if it arrives here and doesn’t match perfectly with the color we’ve sold you before, we won’t sell it as the same color — we make it a special buy. If you like the colors you see, you can pick them up at a discount, but you may never be able to get them from us again. When they’re gone – they’re gone! See all special buys now.

Easter Egg Hunt 2012

Posted by Kevin on April 02 at 07:49 pm

The 2012 Easter egg hunt is here! This is the fourth annual hunt! If this will be your first Lima Beads Easter Egg Hunt, it’s simple. We’ve hidden Easter eggs (a lot of Easter eggs) on our web site. Find them and win beads, supplies, coupons and even gift certificates.

This year’s hunt is very similar to last year’s with two exceptions:

  1. We’ve tried to make the hunt a bit easier by not hiding eggs in any blog posts, designs or fresh picks that were created before 2012. So, you don’t need to go digging through thousands of blog posts, fresh picks and designs…
  2. Second, there’s a BIG twist this year. We’ve just launched a completely new web site. We’ve been working day and night to get it ready for the hunt, which is why the hunt launched a few days later than normal :) We hope you love it. We set out to make it as easy as possible to find what you’re looking for… Unless you’re looking for eggs. We hid those really well!

100 Easter Eggs

That’s right, there are 100 eggs hidden on the web site RIGHT NOW (plus an additional 3 special GOLDEN eggs). They’re scattered all over the Lima Beads web site. The only pages where you won’t find eggs is on blog posts, designs or fresh picks that were created before 2012. As you find eggs, you’ll see this status bar:

EEH Meter

We don’t want anyone to go crazy, so we should tell you up front: finding all the Easter eggs will be difficult. Some of them are very well hidden. It’s not really about finding ALL of the eggs this year, it’s about finding the most and getting to the top of the leaderboard!

The Leaderboard

Just like last year, there’s a leaderboard that shows the top 100 hunters. See the Leaderboard.

The more eggs you find, the more prizes you get. When you reach 10, 25, 35, 50, and 75 eggs a new set of prizes will be unlocked. You can choose from a variety of FREE beads and even a collection of coupons worth 15% – 20% off various items. There are also prizes associated with the Leaderboard. At the end of the Easter Egg Hunt, the top 10 people on the leaderboard will be entered to win The Grand Prize, a $250 Lima Beads Gift Certificate. Everyone else on the leaderboard will be entered to win second prize, a $100 Lima Beads gift certificate. See all the prizes.

The Golden Eggs

goldenEggThis year, we’re also hiding 3 special golden eggs (in addition to the 100 eggs, making a grand total of 103)… If you’re the very first one to find a golden egg, you’ll win a $25 Gift Certificate to our store! If the same person finds multiple golden eggs, that lucky beader will win one $25 gift certificate for each golden egg they find. Yowza! The golden eggs don’t count towards your leaderboard total, and you can keep an eye on who’s found the golden eggs on the leaderboard.

  • The contest ends at 11:59pm on April 8, 2012 (Easter). This means you need to make sure and do the following by this time:
    • Collect all the eggs you can find.
    • If you unlocked any prizes, add them to your shopping bag and place your order—all prizes (except the discount code explained below) must be redeemed by the end of the contest. Normal shipping rates will apply.
    • If you unlocked the coupon prize, write down your coupon code (you can use it any time until the end of 2012)
    • Watch the blog for an announcement about the $250 drawing
  • There are a total of 100 Easter eggs plus an additional 3 “golden” eggs that we’ve hidden for you to collect. Those are the only ones that count toward the prizes, and you must click on them to collect them. You might see some picture of eggs in promotional materials (like the ones in the grass at the top of this page)… those don’t count toward your total.
  • We can’t offer rain checks on the prizes, so make sure to place your order when you’ve unlocked the prizes, because they’re only available while supplies last!
  • We think we have enough free beads to go around… but in case we run short, we reserve the right to substitute a product of equal value as your prize (hey, it’s free, right?) :) . We can’t offer rain checks on unavailable prizes. We also reserve the right to update this list of rules if it needs clarification later.
  • Normal shipping rates apply. As much as we’d like to, we just can’t afford to give away free beads AND ship them for free too. If you add your prizes to an order over $40, you’ll get the same free shipping you always get (inside the USA). If your order is under $40, normal shipping rates will apply to it.
  • Please don’t share the locations of the eggs. This ruins the fun for everyone :) Also, you must find the eggs yourself–you can’t have a robot (or a computer) do it for you. Location sharers and robots will be disqualified from winning prizes! Gotta keep it fair for the rest of us!
  • The most important rule: have fun!

We’re sorry for the delay on the Easter Egg Hunt, it’ll be live shortly. We’re working on something big…

Vintaj Spring Rain Contest

Posted by Kevin on March 14 at 11:52 pm

UPDATE: The contest winners have been chosen, and will be announced on April 18th! Stay tuned to the blog for the results!

A few weeks ago, the designers at Vintaj picked out some of our beads to use in their “Spring Rain” theme. They made some fantastic pieces using a combination of their own items and the beads we sent. The color scheme they chose was so beautiful and their designs turned out so well, that we thought it’d be fun to turn their Spring Rain theme into a Lima Beads design contest!

We’ve packaged these items into kits that you can purchase below. Here’s how it works: purchase a kit, design some jewelry, and add it to the Lima Beads design gallery and be sure to select “Spring Rain 2012” from the seasonal options at the bottom. The people with the 3 most popular designs will each win a Lima Beads gift certificate. Full details are available below. Happy designing!

Embellish your design

As you’ll see in the pieces Vintaj designed (below), they chose to use patinas to color the piece of Arte Metal from the kit. They also chose to use ribbon in their bracelet. For the contest, it’s OK to make these sorts of additions, as long as the majority of your piece is composed of items from the kit. For example, you could use leather cord or chain in place of ribbon. You could color your metal with gilders paste, acryllic paint, or just leave it alone. It’s up to you!

Here are a couple of designs from Vintaj that were inspired by the “Spring Rain” theme. See all Spring Rain designs as they’re uploaded.

Official Contest Rules

  1. To enter your design in the contest, you must start with one of the two kits above. We have a limited quantity available… when they’re gone, they’re gone!
  2. You can make anything you want–a necklace, bracelet, earrings, or anything else. Just make sure that about 75% of your design is made up from the items in the kit.
  3. To submit your design to win, you need to add it to our Design Gallery. Make sure to choose “Spring Rain 2012″ from the seasonal options when you upload your design–that’s important! When you’re finished, your design should show up with all the other Spring Rain designs.
  4. There will be three winners. First prize is a $100 Lima Beads gift certificate. Second prize is a $50 gift certificate. Third prize (you guessed it) is a $25 gift certificate.
  5. Winners will be chosen based on a combination of how many times their design was viewed and favorited–the most popular designs win!
  6. All designs must be submitted to the gallery by 11:59pm on April 15th. The winners will be announced a week later.
  7. The MOST IMPORTANT rule is this: Be yourself, get inspired, and have fun!

Crossword Puzzle Bonus Winners

Posted by Steve on February 09 at 09:37 am

It’s finally a wrap! We’d like to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to follow along with the Crossword Puzzle Sale during January. Hundreds of people solved the puzzle, and thousands of products went on sale over 31 days. We couldn’t be more thrilled with your participation. But that’s probably not why you’re reading this post… :)

The Winners Are…

As we mentioned in the rules, there were three winners to be chosen to receive one of the bonus prize packs from Nunn Design, Vintaj, and TierraCast. And the winners are…

  1. Anna C from Minnesota (she’s Anna C WonderChick if you’ve seen her around here)
  2. Maria from New York (known as NY Bella on Lima Beads)
  3. Joan M from beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada

CONGRATS! I’ve e-mailed the three winners, and I’m awaiting their choices for the bonus pack they’ll receive. In the meantime, I’ll take one last look at the bonus prizes before we pack them up and ship them out to the winners.

One Last Special Thanks

We want to give one more special thanks to our friends at Nunn Design, Vintaj, and TierraCast for sending along these awesome prize packs to give away. It was a great gesture, and we’re grateful to be able to pass along these cool collections to our customers. Thanks again!

Now… off to think about the next big promotion right around Easter… ;)
