Holiday Hint #4: Handling “Helpful” Kids

Posted by Ali on November 10 at 12:24 pm

This post is part of a series for the 2011 Holiday Season… Follow along on the Holiday Page!

I am always trying to find a spare second at home when I can try to be creative. Lately this task has become even harder with Payton not consistently taking an afternoon nap and Christmas gift creations looming. She loves to try an help me make jewelry, but isn’t always all that helpful, so I came up with something easy for her to do at my desk while I work on my own designs – button jewelry. I have a couple cigar boxes full of vintage buttons with big holes that make it easy to string hemp or twine through. She loves this because they are colorful and sparkly and she can do it all by herself. I love it because she stays preoccupied so that I can think straight and design something myself.

Payton's Vintage Button NecklaceHere is a necklace that Payton made the other day. I made a loop clasp for her to put the final button through as closure.

Materials needed:
2′ hemp or twine
old buttons or even big hole beads

Holiday Hint #3: Hang your Ornaments in Style…

Posted by Ali on November 03 at 01:42 pm

This post is part of a series for the 2011 Holiday Season… Follow along on the Holiday Page!

One of the things I don’t look forward to during the holidays is reaching my hand into that dreaded box of pointy ornament hooks, only to stab myself and ruin the spirit. This year, I’m taking a different route using some beads and leftover Artistic Wire.

With just a few inches of Artistic Wire and some sparkly helpers, you can hang your ornaments in style. Check out the tip on making ornament hangers on the Tips & Techniques page!

The Results Are In!

I think the scariest thing about these Fresh Pick Challenges is how creative our customers are! When Steve gave everyone the ability to create their own Fresh Picks, we weren’t sure how it was going to go. I think this goes without saying, but it’s been wildly successful.

Here are the four lucky Fresh Pickers who came out on top of the latest Fresh Pick Challenge:

Best Composition: Artful Accents’ “October Skyline

We had a hard time picking just one for this category because there were so many picks with great composition. The more I look at this pick, the more I like it. You can tell just how much care went into picking each and every product. Just look at how that Lillypilly Verde Patina Copper Sheet works so well with the Red Creek Jasper!

Best Use of Color: D Gooding’s “PumpkinHead is Snoring

I would bet that D Gooding was taking a shot at the “Best Story” prize for this one. Even though it was a finalist for that category, we really liked the bright, pumpkin-esque colors. If you haven’t already read the story, I suggest you give it a read.

Best Story: Kitty Chicky Cat’s “origami garden

“The perfect hostess; gentle as a dove, with the willow’s grace, welcoming as a warm embrace. Yet she is mournful as the wind that ever caresses her dwelling place and cold as the stars that light the eyes of her pretty face.” This story literally gave me the chills. I think I’m going to have nightmares about being folded up into a pretty little lily…

Top-notch storytelling aside, this is a great-looking pick!

People’s Choice: Mary S – Sweet Chick’s “Pumpkin Vines

I’d have to agree with all of you on this one! Great composition, great use of color and beautifully crafted. We’ve come to expect this level of creativity from a seasoned veteran like Mary. She has almost 350 Fresh Picks under her belt!

The winners will receive their $25 Gift Certificate code in an email from me within the next few hours. If for some reason you don’t get the message, just let me know in the comments.

Again, we really appreciate everyone who contributed to make this contest so successful. Hopefully, we’ll have another one of these up our sleeve in the coming months.

Holiday Hint #2: Make it Personal

This post is part of a series for the 2011 Holiday Season… Follow along on the Holiday Page!

With all of the great mixed-media jewelry supplies out there right now, it’s more fun than ever to create something that has a personal touch. This year, I’ll be designing some pieces that contain resin components, keepsake pendants, stamped blanks, and other personalized pieces.

Resin and keepsake pendants are fun because you can include anything you want, as long as it fits. It could be a photo, a birthstone, or even a little note, or any other little trinkets that have sentimental value.

If you’re comfortable with tools, stamping blanks is a great way to give a personalized gift. You can write anything you want and then texture the blank, or use gilders paste to add some color.

Here are some links to items that help you make it personal:

Fresh Pick Challenge: Halloween 2011

Posted by Matt on October 26 at 09:55 am

It seems like this is becoming somewhat of a Halloween tradition around here. To keep you busy during Scream Week, we decided to resurrect the Fresh Pick Challenge! There will be 4 prizes, one for the winner of each of the following categories:

  • Best Composition: The overall composition is one of the most important qualities of a beautiful Fresh Pick. It’s what makes Fresh Picks so unique. Creating the best possible color & texture arrangement is key to winning this category.
  • Best Use of Color: When it comes to beading, is there anything more important than color? It doesn’t necessarily have to be all spooky colors. You can use things like your favorite Halloween candy, a costume that you remember wearing when you were younger, or even your favorite horror flick for inspiration.
  • Best Story: We know how you love to write stories to go along with your Fresh Picks. That’s why we’re going to read each and every description that you take the time to write. It could be a scary story, a tale about your favorite childhood Halloween memory, or anything else your creative mind comes up with :)
  • People’s Choice: We want our Pickers to make the call! The Fresh Pick with the most favorites will win this prize. Even if you’re not submitting a pick, be sure to add your favorite fresh picks to, well, your favorites!

With the exception of the people’s choice winner, the Lima Beads team will choose the winners of each category. We’re excited!

The Prizes

The winner of each category will receive a $25 Lima Beads gift certificate. Also, there is a special prize for the winner of People’s Choice: A beautiful assortment of gemstone beads, pendants and pearls!

If you can’t quite tell from the photo, there’s Carnelian, Amethyst, Kyanite, Amazonite, Peru Rhodochrosite and more!

When you’re ready to submit your Pick, just select it from the drop-down menu in the comment form below. You’ll be able to choose from your 10 most recent picks. Choose the one that you’d like to submit to the contest and “Voila!” Not sure what a Fresh Pick is? Find out on the Design Your Own Fresh Picks page!

Let me lay down a few ground rules before you get started:

  • Only one (1) submision allowed per person. If you make multiple submissions, only your most recent one will be counted.
  • All Picks must be submitted as a comment on this blog post by Monday, October 31st at midnight.

Here’s the Tricky Part

You have to use at least one product from ONE of these categories:

Czech Glass Coins Czech Glass Coins
Luster Silver Crystal Beads Luster Silver Crystal
Red Creek Jasper Beads Red Creek Jasper

IMPORTANT: You DO NOT have to include one product from each category! We’re not that cruel. :)

We’re not done yet! You also need to include at least one product from our Artist Beads section. We have hundreds of artist beads and we think they’re the most creative beads in our entire shop. They should help to inspire some awesome picks!

All you have to do is create a new Fresh Pick and upload it in your comment below. Time to pick!

Holiday Hint #1: Gift Brainstorming

Posted by Ali on October 20 at 02:29 pm

This post is part of a series for the 2011 Holiday Season… Follow along on the Holiday Page!

It’s always around this time every year that I start to feel the stress of holiday gift making. This year, I’ll be making an untold number of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings for all the wonderful ladies in my life. They all have different tastes, styles, and favorite colors.

Over the past few years, I’ve come up with a way to get my thoughts organized and my creativity flowing. I start by making a list of everyone that will need a gift. Then, next to each of their names I write down everything I know about their style and fashion preferences — what they like to wear, where they fall on the funky-to-conservative scale, where they like to shop, their favorite colors and anything else I think will help me design something they’ll love.

Starting off with this list has served me well. It has helped me design gifts that are well-received, decide which beads and supplies I need to purchase, and last but not least, it has helped me get a grip on just how much work I have to do before it’s too late!

I hope this helps. If you have something that works for you, please share it in the comments!

A Call for Halloween Designs and Fresh Picks

Posted by Steve on October 06 at 01:28 pm

Here’s to all the creepy creatives on the Lima Beads site… we want to have a little fun this Halloween, starting with collecting some Fresh Picks and Designs that are scary, spooky, or just plain fun like those odd-shaped pumpkins carved with big silly faces. We’ll be featuring these Fresh Picks and Designs on at our Halloween HQ for the rest of the month. We think it’s going to be a cool source of October inspiration!

Here’s how to participate…

To join the fun, start by designing a Fresh Pick or uploading one of your beading designs to our Design Gallery. There’s an easy way to specify that your new pick or design should go on the Halloween 2011 page. If you’re uploading a design in the Design Gallery, you’ll see the following option when filling out the entry form:

If you’re designing a Fresh Pick, first finishing adding all the items to your pick. Then go to the My Fresh Picks page. You’ll see a choice next to each of your picks that allows you to choose the Halloween promotion. Just like the bottom of this example:

You can always go back and choose the Halloween promo later, so don’t feel like you need to finish everything in one sitting. One last thing… only picks that area created in September and October 2011 will be featured on the Halloween HQ page. No fair using “creativity of old” this season :)

As always, feel free to ask any questions in the comments. And have fun!

Call for Creepy Creativity…

Posted by Steve on September 29 at 01:24 pm

Lima's costume last year...

Believe it or not, it’s that time of year again. No, I’m not just talking about visiting the local cider mill or U-Pick pumpkin patch. I’m talking about getting scary-creative with your halloween designs. This year, we’re going to put your “creepy creativity” on display… but we can’t do it without you!

Next week, we’ll be putting up a page on our site that features halloween-themed designs from the Design Gallery, as well as Fresh Picks with a halloween twist. We’re not sure exactly how we’re going to gather them all up yet, but we’ll make an official announcement next week (so you don’t need to begin creating anything immediately unless you’re super excited about it). Check back here on the blog for more info next week!

Using Multiple Discount Codes

Posted by Steve on September 22 at 11:40 am

I’ve got some news that will make some long-time Lima Beaders happy. After a lot of thinking and a little elbow grease, we’ve lifted the restriction of only one coupon code for every order! We hope this makes shopping at our web site just a little bit easier.

The Back Story

If you’ve taken part in our promotions like the Easter Egg Hunt or the Crossword Puzzle Sale, you’ll know that we occasionally offer coupon codes that can save you money on certain items on our web site. In the past, we had a rule that you could use just one coupon per order–which ended up being a big hassle once in a while. So, we decided a while back to change the rule, and we recently launch an upgrade to our web site that accommodates this change.

How it Works…

Here’s the scoop. If you have a couple coupon codes, just enter them on the bottom of your shopping bag one at a time. After you enter each one, the total at the bottom of your bag will update with a summary of how much you’re saving. Every penny counts! Plus, we made it so you always get the maximum discount for every item. So if you have a “10% off charms” coupon and a “15% off Vintaj” coupon, you will get 15% off any charms made by Vintaj. In other words, each item can have one discount applied to it, and the highest discount wins.

Want to try it?

OK, OK. I know. You want try it out, but you don’t have 2 discount codes? I can help there, too ;) If you sign up for our e-mail list, you should get a coupon to save on regular price items across our site. That’s one. And I had a special coupon code made just for this blog post. If you enter coupon code RE98432, that will save you 15% off all regular priced metal beads in our shop. This coupon will expire on September 30, 2011 (just a few days away), so don’t want too long to try it out.

A final word

We really strive to make our web site a pleasure to browse and shop, and we hope this makes it a little easier along the way. If you have any questions, you can always leave a comment below or send us feedback. Thanks for being a Lima customer–and keep your eyes on this blog in the coming months for more announcements, promos & contests.

Steve’s First Buying Trip

Posted by Steve on September 01 at 01:22 pm

Over the past 7 years at Lima Beads, I’ve had to play a lot of different roles–from packing orders, to answering phone calls, to managing the web site. But until this month, I had never gone on a buying trip… and boy, that was an experience!

It all started innocently… I had other business in the city where one of our suppliers has a showroom, so Kevin asked me if I wouldn’t mind stopping by their shop and picking out some items. It seemed easy enough, so I said “of course” and planned to spend some time picking through beads.

A familiar sign...

I’ve spent enough time digging through boxes of beads at our own warehouse, so I figured I would be prepared to pick out some sparkly additions that our customers would enjoy.

I had a long drive ahead of me, so I packed a bag, hopped in the rental car, and rehearsed my strategy while humming along on the expressway. I knew I would have about five hours to pick out beads, so I wanted to find a handful of new additions, plus some trusted favorites that we’ve carried in the past. Lo and behold, near the start of my trip, I passed a road sign that gave me a chuckle: “Lima Rd.” I figured it was a good sign!

When I arrived, I was really shocked at how many beads there were! I only made it through a portion of them by the time I had to leave. There were so many sparkles in one building! I picked out a selection of beads that I really hope you’ll love, and we just added them to the web site this week. Check them out! And if you don’t love them, you know who to blame (you can blame Kevin :) ).

$500 Contest Winner Announced…

Posted by Steve on July 06 at 06:24 pm

One of the great pleasures of our jobs here at Lima Beads is to surprise one of our customers with the news that his or her name has been drawn as the winner of our $500 shopping spree. I personally had the pleasure of contacting our latest winner, Beth from Cleveland. Congratulations again, Beth!

Every few months, we select a new winner for the $500 shopping spree. Sometimes, the lucky winner is a little skeptical, and might call us back just to make sure. Other times, there might be a few days that go by and we don’t hear anything… only to find that the winner was on vacation–and very surprised when checking their messages upon their return! In Beth’s case, she celebrated with a “happy dance,” which we thought was pretty awesome.

Congratulations again, Beth! We hope you enjoy your beads. For everyone else, head on over to the contest page and you can enter the next one. We’ll announce the winner here on the blog. Happy beading!

The Perfect Time to Try Resin

Posted by Kevin on June 30 at 01:33 pm

All Resin is 20% off through Wednesday July 6th. Get yours now! If you’ve never used resin before, it’s easy! You can create custom components to make your designs your own. We’ve added several tips & techniques today to help you get started.

Today, we’ve published several new tips & techniques to answer some of the most frequent questions we get about resin.

Technique 1: How to seal materials for use in resin

Before using porous materials like paper or photos, you need to seal them with a crafting glue to prevent the resin from seeping in. This technique will tell you everything you need to know. See it now.

Technique 2: Preventing bubbles in your resin

This is the #1 question we get about resin. Bubbles are annoying, but easy to prevent. See how.

Technique 3: Fixing a surface mistake

Lima Studios Crystal Clear Resin is self-healing. If you make a mistake, you can always sand the surface and paint a new layer of resin over it. No one will ever know! See the technique.

Stampt Metal Last Chance Clearance

Posted by Kevin on June 23 at 01:24 pm

We’ve been selling Stampt Metal for almost 3 years now. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true… Although the line is popular, we feel that it’s time for a refresh. We’re putting almost 200 items on clearance for 50% off. This isn’t a sale — when they’re gone, they’re gone FOREVER! You can see the full selection of clearance items on the Stampt Metal Last Chance page.

We have some exciting additions on the way to the line of Stampt Metal. We plan to have lots of new styles and also a huge selection of pieces in raw brass and copper.

Why raw brass and copper? Because it’s more fun to play with! You can color it in a lot of different ways, even torch it if you want to! A few weeks ago, we added Gilders Paste, which is a great way to add your own touch without a lot of work. I also have some exciting news to share on this front — In the coming months, we’ll be adding a line of Patina to the shop. You’ll be able to treat these raw metal pieces in all sorts of fun ways.

For now, pick up some old favorites for the last time. I’ll keep you posted about the new stuff on the way!

Create & Learn at Lima Beads

Posted by Kevin on June 04 at 05:33 pm

We’ve added a whole new section to our web site today called Create & Learn. We’ve made improvements to the design gallery and fresh picks, plus we’ve added a brand new tips & techniques section. We hope it can become a place to learn, teach, collaborate, and meet new friends.

We’ll be filling this section out with tips & techniques and step-by-step projects in the coming weeks. We’re adding a lot of new products that may require a bit of instruction like this week’s Stamps, Blanks, & Gilders Paste. This new section will give us a venue to show all the cool stuff you can do with these products. Let us know what you think, but remember, it’ll be a work in progress for the next few weeks! :)

Updates to the Garden…

Posted by Steve on May 25 at 05:34 pm

Hi all, I just wanted to post a quick note about some updates to our web site. We’ve got some big changes in the works that will make Lima Beads even more fun for sharing ideas and getting the most out of beading! We can’t give away all the details yet, but I wanted to let you know that we’ve been busy behind the scenes working on The Garden. Since the launch back in the summer of 2009, we’ve watched beaders around the world share ideas and meet new friends, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results.

One area of the Garden that never really got much attention was the concept of “groups” and forums. We found that people would rather have a conversation and express ideas through creating awesome designs and Fresh Picks instead of chatting in forums. Plus, they were hard to find and use! Since there was so little activity there, we decided to take them away to make room for other things. Stay tuned to hear more about these changes!

Easter Egg Hunt 2011 Winners!

Posted by Matt on April 26 at 04:15 pm

Easter Egg Hunt 2011We’d like to send a big “THANK YOU” to all the beaders who participated in the 2011 Easter Egg Hunt. It was a blast!

The Winners…

First of all, congrats to the winners of the 3 $25 gift certificates! Those golden eggs were certainly tough to find. Here are the winners:

  • Golden Egg #1: Katie K
  • Golden Egg #2: Natures Precious Gems
  • Golden Egg #3: Cindy V

If you’re one of the three winners above, we’ll be sending you a gift certificate by e-mail today. Congratulations!

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The winner of the $250 Lima Beads gift certificate is… Griffin! She found a total of 89 eggs, which qualified her for the Top 10 on the leaderboard and a chance to win the big prize. We selected her name out of a hat in a random drawing this morning. Congratulations, Griffin!

The Second Prize is a $100 Gift Certificate, awarded to Jenny R, who was in an 18-way tie for 59th on the leaderboard with an even 75 eggs found. Congrats, Jenny! We’ll be e-mailing you and the rest of the winners your gift certificates today.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated this year in the Easter Egg Hunt. We hope you had fun! Here are some fun facts about the hunt:

  • A total of 109,839 eggs were found
  • Over 3,610 people participated with a little over 60% finding more than 20 eggs
  • Only 2 people found the third golden egg.

Since the third golden egg was so hard to find, we’re going to give you the location. If you look at this design, in the second comment, there are two photo attachments. When you clicked on the photo on the right, it was in that window that pops-up. Pretty tricky!

The eggs have since been taken off of the site, but here are some other crafty places that we hid some eggs:

Stay tuned for fun promotions in the future… we love having fun here! If you’re new to Lima Beads, here are some other cool things to check out:

The Lima Boys Turn One

Posted by Kevin on April 21 at 11:16 am

I can’t believe that it’s been a year since we announced the arrival of the Lima babies. They recently celebrated their first birthdays and they’re getting so big!

Andrew’s son Douglas has been busy learning his first words and sign language at daycare. His favorites are “gah-doo” for “thank you” and “gog” for “dog”. He also waves hello and says “hiiiiiiiiiiiiii” to everybody he meets. He isn’t walking yet, but loves crawling and pushing his trucks along saying, “vroooom!”. We think he’s going to be a good reader because he will pull all his books off the shelf and sit on the pile, flipping through each one page by page and showing us the pictures.
Matt’s son Henry is a goofball. Whether it’s eating a lemon and making silly faces, or giving his stuffed animals big, slobbery kisses, he’s constantly finding new ways to make us laugh. He’s getting more comfortable walking, but his preferred method of getting around is still crawling. In fact, the only time he’ll consistently walk is right before his bath and he’s stripped down to his diaper. Don’t all babies just love to be naked? :)
My son Gable is an explorer. We couldn’t wait for him to start crawling — what were we thinking! He’s fast and curious about everything: lamps, dog bowls, plugs, stairs, our poor dog, and especially anything breakable. We child-proofed our house for our daughter (or so we thought), but Gable is on another level. He wants to walk so badly and will stand on his own, until he realizes that he’s on his own… He loves his mommy, his sister, food, and me. In that order.

Easter Egg Hunt 2011

Posted by Steve on April 14 at 02:29 pm

Easter Egg Hunt 2011The 2011 Easter egg hunt is here! This is the third annual hunt and it’s bigger and better than ever! If this will be your first Lima Beads Easter Egg Hunt, it’s simple. We’ve hidden Easter eggs (a lot of Easter eggs) on our web site. Find them and win beads, supplies, coupons and even gift certificates.

This year’s hunt is very similar to last year’s with two exceptions:

  1. The hunt is a bit easier because I can tell you up front that there are NO eggs hidden in “The Garden” or “Fresh Pick” sections of our web site. We figured that with almost 12,000 fresh picks (wow!), everyone would go crazy looking through all those pages for eggs and we don’t need a bunch of crazy beaders running around! All other pages are fair game and may contain eggs.
  2. Second, there’s a new twist! We’ve hidden 3 golden eggs somewhere on the site. Whoever finds them first wins a gift certificate. Read below for more details…

100 Easter Eggs

That’s right, there are 100 eggs hidden on the web site RIGHT NOW (plus an additional 3 special GOLDEN eggs). They’re scattered all over the Lima Beads web site. The only pages where you won’t find eggs are those in the Fresh Picks or Garden sections, as I mentioned above. As you find eggs, you’ll see this status bar:

EEH Meter

We don’t want anyone to go crazy, so we should tell you up front: finding all the Easter eggs will be difficult. Some of them are very well hidden. It’s not really about find ALL of the eggs this year, it’s about finding the most :)

The Leaderboard

Just like last year, there’s a leaderboard that shows the top 100 hunters. It will show the position of each person, but not the number of eggs they’ve found — we’ll reveal those at the end. See the Leaderboard.

The more eggs you find, the more prizes you get. When you reach 10, 25, 50, and 75 eggs a new set of prizes will be unlocked. You can choose from a variety of FREE beads and even a collection of coupons worth 15% – 25% off various items. There are also prizes associated with the Leaderboard. At the end of the Easter Egg Hunt, the top 10 people on the leaderboard will be entered to win The Grand Prize, a $250 Lima Beads Gift Certificate. Everyone else on the leaderboard will be entered to win second prize, a $100 Lima Beads gift certificate. See all the prizes.

The Golden Eggs

goldenEggThis year, we’re also hiding 3 special golden eggs (in addition to the 100 eggs, making a grand total of 103)… If you’re the very first one to find a golden egg, you’ll win a $25 Gift Certificate to our store! If the same person finds multiple golden eggs, that lucky beader will win one $25 gift certificate for each golden egg they find. Yowza! The golden eggs don’t count towards your leaderboard total, and you can keep an eye on who’s found the golden eggs on the leaderboard.

  • The contest ends at 11:59pm on April 24, 2011 (Easter). This means you need to make sure and do the following by this time:
    • Collect all the eggs you can find.
    • If you unlocked any prizes, add them to your shopping bag and place your order—all prizes (except the discount code explained below) must be redeemed by the end of the contest. Normal shipping rates will apply.
    • If you unlocked the coupon prize, write down your coupon code (you can use it any time until the end of 2011)
    • Watch the blog for an announcement about the $250 drawing
  • There are a total of 100 Easter eggs plus an additional 3 “golden” eggs that we’ve hidden for you to collect. Those are the only ones that count toward the prizes, and you must click on them to collect them. You might see some picture of eggs in promotional materials (like the ones in the grass at the top of this page)… those don’t count toward your total.
  • We can’t offer rain checks on the prizes, so make sure to place your order when you’ve unlocked the prizes, because they’re only available while supplies last!
  • We think we have enough free beads to go around… but in case we run short, we reserve the right to substitute a product of equal value as your prize (hey, it’s free, right? :) . We can’t offer rain checks on unavailable prizes. We also reserve the right to update this list of rules if it needs clarification later.
  • Please don’t share the locations of the eggs. This ruins the fun for everyone :) Also, you must find the eggs yourself–you can’t have a robot (or a computer) do it for you. Location sharers and robots will be disqualified from winning prizes! Gotta keep it fair for the rest of us!
  • The most important rule: have fun!

My Funky Valentine

Posted by Kevin on January 20 at 03:08 pm

Is anyone else bored with Valentine’s Day beads lately? It seems like the same old little metal hearts, pink crystal and glass, and all the other things you see year after year.

Screen shot 2011-01-20 at 1.40.07 PMWe wanted to have a little more fun with Valentine’s Day this year, so we got some of our artists involved and what we came up with is pretty funky! We’ve got heart-themed beads, pendants, links, and even clasps.

Screen shot 2011-01-20 at 2.54.54 PMIt’ll be the 15th Valentine’s Day that Ali and I have been together. Sure, it’s a greeting card holiday, but it’s an excuse to spend a great evening with her, so I love it. We’ll most likely get an eager set of grandparents to babysit and go out for a relaxing dinner. With two kids under the age of 3, it’s always nice to have  a meal where you actually get to taste your food :)

What do you have planned?
