Updates to the Garden…

Posted by Steve on May 25 at 05:34 pm

Hi all, I just wanted to post a quick note about some updates to our web site. We’ve got some big changes in the works that will make Lima Beads even more fun for sharing ideas and getting the most out of beading! We can’t give away all the details yet, but I wanted to let you know that we’ve been busy behind the scenes working on The Garden. Since the launch back in the summer of 2009, we’ve watched beaders around the world share ideas and meet new friends, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results.

One area of the Garden that never really got much attention was the concept of “groups” and forums. We found that people would rather have a conversation and express ideas through creating awesome designs and Fresh Picks instead of chatting in forums. Plus, they were hard to find and use! Since there was so little activity there, we decided to take them away to make room for other things. Stay tuned to hear more about these changes!

Easter Egg Hunt 2011 Winners!

Posted by Matt on April 26 at 04:15 pm

Easter Egg Hunt 2011We’d like to send a big “THANK YOU” to all the beaders who participated in the 2011 Easter Egg Hunt. It was a blast!

The Winners…

First of all, congrats to the winners of the 3 $25 gift certificates! Those golden eggs were certainly tough to find. Here are the winners:

  • Golden Egg #1: Katie K
  • Golden Egg #2: Natures Precious Gems
  • Golden Egg #3: Cindy V

If you’re one of the three winners above, we’ll be sending you a gift certificate by e-mail today. Congratulations!

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The winner of the $250 Lima Beads gift certificate is… Griffin! She found a total of 89 eggs, which qualified her for the Top 10 on the leaderboard and a chance to win the big prize. We selected her name out of a hat in a random drawing this morning. Congratulations, Griffin!

The Second Prize is a $100 Gift Certificate, awarded to Jenny R, who was in an 18-way tie for 59th on the leaderboard with an even 75 eggs found. Congrats, Jenny! We’ll be e-mailing you and the rest of the winners your gift certificates today.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated this year in the Easter Egg Hunt. We hope you had fun! Here are some fun facts about the hunt:

  • A total of 109,839 eggs were found
  • Over 3,610 people participated with a little over 60% finding more than 20 eggs
  • Only 2 people found the third golden egg.

Since the third golden egg was so hard to find, we’re going to give you the location. If you look at this design, in the second comment, there are two photo attachments. When you clicked on the photo on the right, it was in that window that pops-up. Pretty tricky!

The eggs have since been taken off of the site, but here are some other crafty places that we hid some eggs:

Stay tuned for fun promotions in the future… we love having fun here! If you’re new to Lima Beads, here are some other cool things to check out:

The Lima Boys Turn One

Posted by Kevin on April 21 at 11:16 am

I can’t believe that it’s been a year since we announced the arrival of the Lima babies. They recently celebrated their first birthdays and they’re getting so big!

Andrew’s son Douglas has been busy learning his first words and sign language at daycare. His favorites are “gah-doo” for “thank you” and “gog” for “dog”. He also waves hello and says “hiiiiiiiiiiiiii” to everybody he meets. He isn’t walking yet, but loves crawling and pushing his trucks along saying, “vroooom!”. We think he’s going to be a good reader because he will pull all his books off the shelf and sit on the pile, flipping through each one page by page and showing us the pictures.
douglas_post
Matt’s son Henry is a goofball. Whether it’s eating a lemon and making silly faces, or giving his stuffed animals big, slobbery kisses, he’s constantly finding new ways to make us laugh. He’s getting more comfortable walking, but his preferred method of getting around is still crawling. In fact, the only time he’ll consistently walk is right before his bath and he’s stripped down to his diaper. Don’t all babies just love to be naked? :)
henry_post
My son Gable is an explorer. We couldn’t wait for him to start crawling — what were we thinking! He’s fast and curious about everything: lamps, dog bowls, plugs, stairs, our poor dog, and especially anything breakable. We child-proofed our house for our daughter (or so we thought), but Gable is on another level. He wants to walk so badly and will stand on his own, until he realizes that he’s on his own… He loves his mommy, his sister, food, and me. In that order.

Easter Egg Hunt 2011

Posted by Steve on April 14 at 02:29 pm

Easter Egg Hunt 2011The 2011 Easter egg hunt is here! This is the third annual hunt and it’s bigger and better than ever! If this will be your first Lima Beads Easter Egg Hunt, it’s simple. We’ve hidden Easter eggs (a lot of Easter eggs) on our web site. Find them and win beads, supplies, coupons and even gift certificates.

This year’s hunt is very similar to last year’s with two exceptions:

  1. The hunt is a bit easier because I can tell you up front that there are NO eggs hidden in “The Garden” or “Fresh Pick” sections of our web site. We figured that with almost 12,000 fresh picks (wow!), everyone would go crazy looking through all those pages for eggs and we don’t need a bunch of crazy beaders running around! All other pages are fair game and may contain eggs.
  2. Second, there’s a new twist! We’ve hidden 3 golden eggs somewhere on the site. Whoever finds them first wins a gift certificate. Read below for more details…

100 Easter Eggs

That’s right, there are 100 eggs hidden on the web site RIGHT NOW (plus an additional 3 special GOLDEN eggs). They’re scattered all over the Lima Beads web site. The only pages where you won’t find eggs are those in the Fresh Picks or Garden sections, as I mentioned above. As you find eggs, you’ll see this status bar:

EEH Meter

We don’t want anyone to go crazy, so we should tell you up front: finding all the Easter eggs will be difficult. Some of them are very well hidden. It’s not really about find ALL of the eggs this year, it’s about finding the most :)

The Leaderboard

Just like last year, there’s a leaderboard that shows the top 100 hunters. It will show the position of each person, but not the number of eggs they’ve found — we’ll reveal those at the end. See the Leaderboard.

Prizes

The more eggs you find, the more prizes you get. When you reach 10, 25, 50, and 75 eggs a new set of prizes will be unlocked. You can choose from a variety of FREE beads and even a collection of coupons worth 15% – 25% off various items. There are also prizes associated with the Leaderboard. At the end of the Easter Egg Hunt, the top 10 people on the leaderboard will be entered to win The Grand Prize, a $250 Lima Beads Gift Certificate. Everyone else on the leaderboard will be entered to win second prize, a $100 Lima Beads gift certificate. See all the prizes.

The Golden Eggs

goldenEggThis year, we’re also hiding 3 special golden eggs (in addition to the 100 eggs, making a grand total of 103)… If you’re the very first one to find a golden egg, you’ll win a $25 Gift Certificate to our store! If the same person finds multiple golden eggs, that lucky beader will win one $25 gift certificate for each golden egg they find. Yowza! The golden eggs don’t count towards your leaderboard total, and you can keep an eye on who’s found the golden eggs on the leaderboard.

Rules

  • The contest ends at 11:59pm on April 24, 2011 (Easter). This means you need to make sure and do the following by this time:
    • Collect all the eggs you can find.
    • If you unlocked any prizes, add them to your shopping bag and place your order—all prizes (except the discount code explained below) must be redeemed by the end of the contest. Normal shipping rates will apply.
    • If you unlocked the coupon prize, write down your coupon code (you can use it any time until the end of 2011)
    • Watch the blog for an announcement about the $250 drawing
  • There are a total of 100 Easter eggs plus an additional 3 “golden” eggs that we’ve hidden for you to collect. Those are the only ones that count toward the prizes, and you must click on them to collect them. You might see some picture of eggs in promotional materials (like the ones in the grass at the top of this page)… those don’t count toward your total.
  • We can’t offer rain checks on the prizes, so make sure to place your order when you’ve unlocked the prizes, because they’re only available while supplies last!
  • We think we have enough free beads to go around… but in case we run short, we reserve the right to substitute a product of equal value as your prize (hey, it’s free, right? :) . We can’t offer rain checks on unavailable prizes. We also reserve the right to update this list of rules if it needs clarification later.
  • Please don’t share the locations of the eggs. This ruins the fun for everyone :) Also, you must find the eggs yourself–you can’t have a robot (or a computer) do it for you. Location sharers and robots will be disqualified from winning prizes! Gotta keep it fair for the rest of us!
  • The most important rule: have fun!

My Funky Valentine

Posted by Kevin on January 20 at 03:08 pm

vdaybanner

Is anyone else bored with Valentine’s Day beads lately? It seems like the same old little metal hearts, pink crystal and glass, and all the other things you see year after year.

Screen shot 2011-01-20 at 1.40.07 PMWe wanted to have a little more fun with Valentine’s Day this year, so we got some of our artists involved and what we came up with is pretty funky! We’ve got heart-themed beads, pendants, links, and even clasps.

Screen shot 2011-01-20 at 2.54.54 PMIt’ll be the 15th Valentine’s Day that Ali and I have been together. Sure, it’s a greeting card holiday, but it’s an excuse to spend a great evening with her, so I love it. We’ll most likely get an eager set of grandparents to babysit and go out for a relaxing dinner. With two kids under the age of 3, it’s always nice to have  a meal where you actually get to taste your food :)

What do you have planned?

Calling all lovers!

Posted by Steve on January 19 at 03:41 pm

lima cupidUPDATE: Here’s a big, loving “THANKS” to everyone who created a Fresh Pick in the past day about hearts! Random picks are featured on the bottom of the Funky Valentine page, and you can see all the heart picks here. You rock!

Cupid’s headed for Lima Beads… and we need some Fresh Picks to show him love! We’ll be collecting all heart-centric Fresh Picks over the next few days, and it’s easy to get involved. If you create any new Fresh Picks with either “Heart” or “Valentine” in the title, we’ll gather them up and show them off on a special page later this week. Here’s an example pick that I just created.

heartsWe hope it will be fun to show off your lovely picks! If you have any questions, just leave a comment. And if you’re new here, you can find out more about designing Fresh Picks. Thanks everyone! Check back soon!

Using Smilies in Your Comments

Posted by Steve on January 11 at 09:43 am

Hi all Garden members! I haven’t spoken to any of you since 2010 (haha)! :P

We’ve gotten some questions lately about how to make smiley faces in your comments about Fresh Picks and Designs. Here’s a chart that will hopefully make it easier to put some emotion in there! ;)

To get these different smilies in your comments, just type the text equivalent and The Garden will automatically turn it into the appropriate smiley. :o

Crossword Sale 2011

Posted by Kevin on January 01 at 10:17 am

crosswordSaleHappy New Year, everyone! We’ve decided to start 2011 off the same way we started 2010 — with a Crossword Sale! That means there’s going to be a new sale EVERY day in January. We’ve put together a crossword puzzle with 31 hints, one for each day in January. The answers indicate which items are on sale for that day. The puzzle is a little bit harder this year, so sharpen your pencils!

The sales last 24 hours each, so you need to add the items to your shopping bag that day in order to get the reduced prices. Once they’re in your bag, you have 7 days to complete your purchase (all the details are available on the Shopping Bag page).

The Bonus…

lima with pencilAs a bonus, if you complete the crossword puzzle early, you have the chance to unscramble a secret series of letters to reveal a hidden message. If you guess right, you’ll get a prize! So head on over to the crossword page, and check back daily to see what’s on sale!

Give (or get) the Gift of Beads

Posted by Kevin on December 02 at 01:52 pm

Buying a gift certificate from Lima Beads just got a whole lot easier!

There are now three ways to get a gift certificate:

1. Have it e-mailed instantly to you or the gift recipient. Just type in an e-mail address and we’ll do the rest. The surpriserecipient’s inbox will be full of joy in seconds! If you prefer to print it out and give the gift in person, no problem. Just type in your own address and we’ll send it to you.

2. Have it sent via US First Class Mail. No more expensive shipping. Just provide a mailing address and we’ll send a fancy hand-written paper copy, complete with sparkly paper and envelope! We’ll mail it via First Class Mail to the address you provide.

kevin-garden3. Send a gift certificate directly to someone in the Lima Beads Garden. We now have gift certificates starting at a value of $5.00.  As long as you know their garden name, you can send a gift certificate to someone’s email instantly! What a great way to make a lucky beader’s day :)

We’ve also set up an easy to remember page if you want to tell your friends or family that you’d like a Lima Beads gift certificate this year. It’s www.LimaBeads.com/Gift – that will take them straight to the gift certificate page!

Enjoy!

This year, we have more free gifts than ever before. There are over 30 things to choose from: gemstones, A grade peridot, tools, Beadalon, Czech glass, pendants, cubic zirconia, even a resin kit! These are hands down the best free gifts we’ve ever had. I’ve been collecting awesome, limited availability stuff all year for this :)

We only have 30-40 of some of the free gift items and they will sell out before the end of the year, so if you have your eye on something, don’t wait too long. We will replace anything that sells out with another item of similar value.

Finally, I want to thank all of you for another wonderful year. From the entire Lima team – have a safe and happy holiday season and enjoy your free beads!

If you get a chance, please let us know what you think of this year’s gifts in the comments below!

Halloween Fresh Pick Challenge Results!

Posted by Matt on November 01 at 02:17 pm

There’s nothing quite as frightening as a bunch of beaders who are all competing to win free beads! Seriously, we’re all really impressed by the amount of thought that went into each and every submission for the latest Fresh Pick Challenge. There were certainly some bone-chilling combinations and thrilling stories. Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest.

Here are the winners of the $25 Gift Certificates:

Best Composition: BeadAddict’s “Before I Fly South

One of the most popular trends in this contest was the use of C-Koop Enameled Metal leaves in Fresh Picks! It was a pretty obvious choice because of the crafty, colorful, autumn-esque designs. However, BeadAddict was able to surround those beautiful pieces with a nice supporting cast of gemstone beads, pearls and metal. Just one look at this pick and you’ll be longing for a fall retreat in upstate New York.

Best Use of Color: Brenda S’s “The Zombie

We all really enjoyed her eerie story, but the most impressive thing about this pick is the way Brenda used color to complement that story. I’ve never compared our Labradorite to the decaying skin of a zombie, but the greenish-gray luster of the stone has never looked so creepy. The red accents of garnet are a bloody-brilliant touch as well. Great pick.

Best Use of Color: Kitty Chicky Cat’s “out of the seaweed rising

“Seaweed comes to form her hair, a floating, tangled, grasping mass, writhing there like medusa’s snakes, free to hunt again and take hold like wet fingers anything that lingers.” This sounds like it belongs in the latest collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories. We also really liked the composition. All around great pick!

People’s Choice: Eeka Mouse’s “Midnight Decision

It’s the pick with the most favorites, and it’s not hard to see why. The story is great and the colors are fantastic. Not many of you were brave enough to throw Rainbow Fluorite in the mix, but Eeka Mouse did it quite well. As we mentioned before, the winner of the people’s choice award will also be receiving a pumpkin full of beads!

The winners will receive their Gift Certificate code in a message from me in The Garden. If for some reason you didn’t get the message, just let me know in the comments.

Again, we really appreciate everyone who contributed to make this contest so successful. Hopefully, we’ll have another one of these up our sleeve in the coming months.

Fresh Pick Challenge: Halloween

Posted by Matt on October 28 at 01:12 pm

I honestly can’t believe that it’s Halloween already! It seems like yesterday that we held our first ever Fresh Pick Challenge.

A lot has happened since that Valentine’s Day inspired contest. Our three new baby boys are almost 7 months old now, we’ve added Lima Studios epoxy and resin kits, how-to projects, 4 new artists and a ton of new gemstone beads!

Since we had so much fun with the last Fresh Pick Challenge, we decided to have a Halloween inspired contest to keep you busy during Scream Week. We’re giving away $25 gift certificates to the winners of each of the following categories:

  • Best Composition: The overall composition is one of the most important qualities of a beautiful Fresh Pick. It’s what makes our Fresh Picks so unique. Creating the best possible product arrangement is key to winning this category.
  • Best Use of Color: When it comes to beading, is there anything more important than color? It doesn’t necessarily have to be all pinks, reds and purples. Maybe your favorite romantic movie, love song, or the restaurant of your first date inspires you!
  • Best Story: We know how you love to write stories to go along with your Fresh Picks. That’s why we’re going to read each and every description that you take the time to write. But please, try to keep it as short as you can! I have the feeling that we’re going to have a lot of story-tellers submitting their picks.
  • People’s Choice: We want our Pickers to make the call! The Fresh Pick with the most favorites will win this prize. Even if you’re not submitting a pick, be sure to add your favorite fresh picks to, well, your favorites!

Also, there is a special prize for the winner of People’s Choice. A little pumpkin full of beads!

pumpkin

When you’re ready to submit your Pick, just select it from the drop-down menu in the comment form below. You’ll see your 10 most recent picks. Choose the one that you’d like to submit to the contest and “Voila!” Not sure what a Fresh Pick is? Find out on the Design Your Own Fresh Picks page!

Let me lay down a few ground rules before you get started:

  • Only one (1) submision allowed per person. If you make multiple submissions, only your most recent one will be counted.
  • You must create a pick specifically for this contest. We all love recycling too, but we want to see some awesome new picks!
  • All Picks must be submitted as a comment on this blog post by Sunday, October 31st at midnight.

Here’s the Tricky Part

You have to use at least one product from ANY of these stones:

Labradorite Beads Labradorite
Copper Green Opal Beads Copper Green Opal
Rainbow Fluorite Beads Rainbow Fluorite

IMPORTANT: You DO NOT have to include one product of each stone! We’re not that cruel. :)

All you have to do is create a new Fresh Pick and upload it in your comment below. Now, get Picking!

Heirloom Lockets at Lima Beads

Posted by Kevin on September 23 at 02:59 pm

There’s something about lockets… It’s the nostalgia of an old photo combined with the feeling of wearing a vintage piece of jewelry. Lockets allow you to carry memories with you. Whether it’s a photo of a loved one or a photo of your favorite vacation spot, these things are never far from your heart when you’re wearing a locket.

Filigree Time Piece Locket

Filigree Time Piece Locket

Today we’re adding a line of lockets that I’m very proud of. They range from large to small, from plain to ornate and when you hold one in your hand, you know you’re holding something of quality.

These lockets are made 100% in the USA by old companies, some of which opened their doors in the 1940s. That’s the thing I love most about this line of heirloom quality lockets — if my grandmother had purchased a locket when she was young, she would have gotten the same product that we’re selling today. These are made on the same machines that they were 50 years ago!

lockets

Our heirloom lockets are made of good quality, thick brass. We have them available in plated finishes like antique copper or antique brass, which feel older and more classic, but we also have more trendy, popular finishes like gunmetal.

Photo Frames

Most of our lockets come with the option to purchase a photo frame kit. This kit includes a photo frame setting that snaps into the locket, a backer for the photo, and a clear piece of acetate to protect the front of the photo. These are optional. You can usually cut a photo, push it into a locket, and have it stay put without a frame, however, if you’re considering using a valuable photo or want it to look perfect, we would suggest a frame kit.

Do you have an old locket — maybe a family heirloom locket? We’d love to see it! You can include photos in your comments below.

First Come, First Served Special Edition: Ali’s Stash

Posted by Kevin on September 16 at 02:49 pm

Ali's Stash

We’ve got an amazing edition of First Come First Served products–you really have to see them to believe them! These are spectacular items at prices you probably don’t see too often. Here’s the back story…

FCFS itemsAli and I go on a lot of buying trips, and we see some truly amazing products. Sometimes, we take a few strands back to the warehouse as samples to buy later. But Ali always finds a way to sneak some goodies in her personal stash to design with, too. (How could a beader resist?)

Over time, she has built up quite a stash of gorgeous beads, pearls & more. I know, you’re thinking “how could you ever have too make beautiful beads,” but I’m telling you, there are too many. So we’re going to sell them as a special edition of First Come First Served! The quantites are extremely limited, and most items we’ll never see again around the shop. So don’t miss out, and check out the deals.

Important Notes

  • The quantities are extremely limited!
  • In order to secure these items, you need to place your order and complete the transaction. If they sell out before you do that, they will be removed from your shopping bag.
  • These items are all FINAL SALE, so we can’t accept returns for them
  • We can’t offer rain checks–when they’re gone, they’re gone! :)

Cathy’s Collection 20% off

Posted by Kevin on July 29 at 01:43 pm

It’s that time of year again — we just did inventory. Every bead, finding, cabochon, pearl, and foot of chain has been counted.

Cathy and her team did an awesome job getting it all counted. They even uncovered some items that weren’t already for sale at Lima Beads. We’re calling them “Cathy’s Collection” in honor of all their hard work during this year’s inventory. :) We’re also putting them on sale for 20% off for a limited time (see below for details).

Cathy's Collection

They found some great stuff. There are a lot of gemstone strands that range from boulder opal to ruby crazy lace agate. They also found some awesome midnight blue and sky blue freshwater pearls!

See all of Cathy’s Collection now!

Things to remember…

The sale ends on Sunday night at midnight (August 1, 2010). We can’t offer any rain checks, so make sure to place your order by that time in order to get the sale prices! Start saving now!

Design Gallery Feature: Lynn G

Posted by Steve on July 22 at 10:20 am

In between all of the busy work it takes to put up new beads on our web site every week (not to mention ship out all the orders!), we make sure to keep a close eye on all of the inspiring work being done in the Design Gallery. Our customers really have amazing talent! One of those designers that caught our eye recently is Lynn G. Have you seen her PMC pendants? They’re awesome! Check out all her designs.

Some of Lynn's PMC Pendants

Some of Lynn's PMC Pendants

I corresponded with Lynn over e-mail to ask a few questions about her experience & inspiration with her work in PMC and beyond. I hope you enjoy some great information she was able to share.

Getting Started with PMC

Lynn says: “It all started when I wanted to add something different to my jewelry, and I started checking out books from the library, and came across PMC. I read them and I decided to go for it. I purchased a kiln and some other supplies. I started practicing, I think that’s the best way to learn.”

Planning...

Planning...

Advice for Beginners

Lynn had some good advice for those who haven’t worked with PMC: “I recommend reading books like I did. I can suggest a very good one: Metal Clay for Beaders by Irena Meich. If you can’t afford a kiln you can torch some things, but you are limited, or some local bead stores have kilns and will fire for you.” Here’s another great nugget of advice from Lynn: “You have to have an idea ready, because the clay dries out fast!”

Inspiration

Lynn has always been clear that nature is a huge inspiration to her. You can see this in her Owl in Flight, Sea Shell pendants, Strawberry Fields Forever, and even in the leafy adornments she uses in her photographs.

Get inspired!

Get inspired!

I love nature, too, but I wondered how people would get inspired if they lived in a big city and couldn’t go for a quick walk in nature. Lynn advises: “You can make just about anything with a good imagination. If you don’t live by nature, you can use many things around the home: old buttons, lace, perchaced molds and stamps with texture, houseplants, and so much more.”

Final word

I thought Lynn’s final piece of advice was simple and inspiring. She says simply, “if you dream it, you can do it.” Lynn wanted to let everyone know that she’d be happy to answer questions from anyone getting started. You can send her a message from her profile page in The Garden. Thanks again, Lynn, for your time and all your great work!

The winner will receive a Lima Beads $100 gift certificate. The gift certificate can be used for absolutely anything in the Lima Beads shop and must be redeemed within 1 year. The winner will also be announced on the blog, so the whole beading world will know how incredibly awesome you are!

Geode

The "Cool Geode"

The first person to guess within 100 feet of the actual amount will receive a cool geode, so hurry and start guessing, but remember — you only get 1 guess per day!
