New and Interesting FYI (5 posts)

Trade periodicals can be a source for exploring new trends, styles, techniques and vendors. I haven’t found one periodical which suits all my varied tastes, so I cruise the grocery store magazine isle (it’s handy) and the book stores (a quick lunch hour trip) and I purchase whatever looks interesting.

The Lapidary Journal: Jewelry Artist is my most recent find. The August 2009 issue is full of some interesting topics.

“Natures Coolest Fossil Gems, a Quick Guide” caught my attention first because I am seeing more fossils in jewelry and finding myself drawn to their unique character. This is a quick, overview of the types of fossils that can be used in jewelry, including ammolite, dino bone, amber etc.

Then, the article, “Sell Your Jewelry Online: Building an Online Following” and the magazine virtually lept into my grocery cart.
A precise treatise including the “5 Secrets for Selling Online”, for me, paid for the magazine. In addition, the comparison of ETSY, 1,000 Markets and Trunkt group sites may be useful. I would have liked to see Ruby Lane, Artfire compared but then, I am detail oriented.
Some really cool jewelry……not the “beading” variety, more for the “metal heads”, however, some great ideas.
Not affilliated, just sharing & FYI…………

I am finding that the supply and variety of beading magazines (of any medium) is dwindling in my area, even at Barns and Noble. I don’t like to purchase a book or subscribe to a magazine unless I have looked at it first.

I like the Jewelry Artist magazine, but it is way beyond my current talent of basic stringing. But I am a sucker for rocks and fossils, so I may just have to pick up this issue.

By the way, have you seen the awesome Druzy Agate Sliced Pendants from Lima Beads? I made a necklace out of one and it was snatched up immediately.

Great post, and thanks for sharing!

I keep finding new interesting bead magazines! Alot of them have free trial issues like Step by Step Beads,Wirework and Jewelry Artist, then you can see if you like it before you commit. The only one I subscribe to now is Beadstyle-love it!

OK time for something New and Interesting: some chatter concerning prevention for basemetal (Copper, Brass, Bronze) tarnish, turning, or just plain ‘not what it used to be’.
Have used the Renaissance Wax, miroccrystalline wax/polish, some use Turtle Wax….these wear off.

A relatively new recommendation, and I am closely looking at ProtectaClear by
    EverbriteCoatings.com.
Some rave reviews…Does anyone have experience with this?

Seashell, I would be interested in any recommendations on this also. I don’t use copper or brass because I’m old school and I don’t want my creations turning green on somebody’s neck.

If you do find that ProtectaClear works, that would be great and a lot cheaper than sterling silver.
