Southwest Landscapes Series - Corn Maiden II Necklace and Earrings

About this design:

This is my entry in Art Bead Scene's September challenge, the theme of which is based on a quilt created in 1965 by Lillie Mae Pettway (1927-1990), one of a group of women who live/lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee's Bend, Alabama. A collection of the quilts is part of an exhibition at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

I am a quilter, too. I learned from my mother, who learned from her grandmothers. I wanted to try and come up with a variation of the Log Cabin quilting pattern in polymer. I also made some in a few other pieces in other color palettes.

Components:

polymer clay, horn bone, Red Jasper, Copper, Terra Cotta clay

What beautiful earthy, Southwest colors! Best of luck in winning the ABS Challenge! It’s gorgeous, Lynda!

Just wondering, how do you think this type of pendant would look with the bail on the point, made into a diamond shape? Hmmmm…..?!! :-)

Lynda, you’ve done it (once again!) — You’ve totally amazed me with your talents!!! :D These are fabulous creations! Wishing you tons of luck in the Challenge! :D

I don’t quilt, either, but I do love the various quilt patterns. It is incredible how you combine your colors and designs to look like a quilt pattern, Lynda! :D

I like Mary’s idea of positioning a pendant so it looks like a diamond shape. I’ve done that with several of my fused glass pendants and have been pleased with the look. 8)

My hats off to you for such beautiful pieces. You are so multitalented! Your work with polymer clay is incredible. I’ve worked with it before but never really got into it. Nice job!

Thank you, Judith, C and Lynn! This is easier than it might look to achieve. It is a “controlled marbling” technique using scrap clay, which can pile up in an array of colors.

Lynn, are you sure you like it, with all that ORANGE? :) LOL
