About this design:
Crystal Suncatchers: I bought the beautiful crystals that you have on sale and they were so sparkly that I just had to put them on display so everyone could enjoy them. Friends have asked me to make them as gifts for Mothers Day (see photo).
Components:
Large Crystal 30mm or desired size, soft flex beading wire (med), crimp tube, German style wire (20 gauge), 14mm crystals, 4mm crystals, oval jump rings, large jump ring (18 gauge)Step-by-Step Instructions:
|
Step 1: Insert small piece of softflex wire (about 10 inches) through opening at top of large crystal. |
|
Step 2: Thread crimp tube on to softflex wire. (Insert both ends of softflex wire through crimp tube and slid the crimp bead down close to the large crystal. Use plier to flaten crimp (give it a little tug to make sure the wire will hold the weight of the crystal. |
|
Step 3: Add a 14mm crystal and another crimp bead to the softflex wire. Set aside while you do step 4. |
|
Step 4: Cut 3 inch piece of German Style wire and make a wrapped loop on on end (wrap wire three times). Add a 14mm crystal and do another wrapped loop. |
|
Step 5: Go back to the large crystal and run the softflex through the loop you made in step 4. Pull the softflex wire through the crimp tube and use plier to flaten the crimp. Check to make sure wire does not slip through the crimp. |
|
Step 6: From this step on make a wrapped loop, connect it to the already formed loop and then wrap 3 times. Add 14mm crystal, make loop, wrap three times, and continue to do this until you have the desired lenghth. |
|
Step 7: Attach last loop to large 16 gauge jump ring. Use small oval jump rings to attach whatever you want to add to your project (small beads, charms, etc.) |

ScarletBegonias says:so gorgeous! at first I thought they were earrings – ha! What a beautiful and thoughtful gift!
Just wondering how big your leaf is at the top. I love the leaf but am hoping to find something a little more crystal to finish the end off with crystal.
You’ve given me a great idea for an affirmation bracelet I’m building for my niece too!

M Young says:Thanks for your kind words. Scarletbegonias, the green leaf is 2-1/2″. Total length of the suncatcher is about 11 inches. Got the large crystals on Amazon.com for a very reasonable price.

Erin Sue says:How cute would these make for “mismatched” Earrings? I would make them slightly smaller with the same for the long parts on both sides then pick complimentary crystals for the bottom. Love them!

Tres Chick says:Erin Sue, great idea – they’d really work as mismatches (aka “non-identical twins”, with a bow to Ali). _So_ pretty.
