Peggy3 says:What are the shell type beads?
On Jan 13, 2013 at 3:50 pm #
Laud says:Thanks! This piece kind of put itself together. These ammonites have exquisite cobalt and turquoise coloring. (I wish LB would get in another shipment.) The ribbon is still in stock. The shell-type beads are really sunstone nuggets. They have natural sparkle, which I think complements the matte glass and raku.

Julie Shane says:Laud, you’ve amazed me again! I’ve never been able to figure out the alure of what I see as “odd” ammonite beads. Why would someone want a bead shaped as a nautical shell? As a native Floridian, I would just use a real shell.
However, you have now shown me their appeal. This is fantastic! Love the mix of textures!

Julie, I didn’t know there were native Floridians still around! I’ve never met one in the 8 years I’ve been here!

PPR says:Laud: Amazing and fantastic!

Laud says:Julie, I was thinking of the ammonites as fossils rather than seashells. Real fossils would cost a small fortune and be heavy, so the glass ones have some advantages. Still, I tried to combine elements that didn’t look too manmade, as though someone had simply found the items and strung them together. That was the concept, anyway.

Jsnana says:Hi, I’m new but you all sound like so much fun I couldn’t resist joining in. I thought those really were fossils until I read all your notes. I have always wanted to do some work with real ammonites and I saw a small slice of conch (sp) filled with tinted resin that looked like amber. It was just one thin slice but it got me hooked and eversince I’ve wanted to do something like that as an asemmetrical focal. Now yall know my deepest design secret. Oh well if someone else makes it I want to see it.

Laud says:Welcome aboard! LB is a fun place; hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I made a real fossil necklace about two years ago. It uses fossil rounds and a large ammonite focal. It’s nice, but it’s heavy, and the colors are all grays. By comparison, this necklace weighs nearly nothing and is brighter. Each has its merits, I guess.
