Mokume' Patina

About this design:

Anyone that has dabbled with poly clay might know what mokume gane is, and how the effect is achieved. I won't go into in here...other than to say it is layers of clays with shapes, holes, circles poked into it so the layers distort, then you slice thin to reveal the different colors.

Anyway, with this I did different layers of the Vintaj patina, using dots and stripes and washes (at one point it looked like a watermelon!). Then I turned it over & dimpled it with the peen hammer, just whacked it a bunch. Finally I sanded off layers on the top and, based on the raised & indented parts, this is the effect. Coated with clear coat to finish.

Components:

Copper oval blank, LB flower beads, LB leaf beads, magatama beads.

Thanks for describing your technique, Cindy. Never heard of it, but you both described and demonstrated what a stunning effect it gives. Not only is your patina link fabulous, but you added just the right elements to make it a real star. Another great piece – - -

Cindy…this is sooo pretty. Like flowers to wear around your wrist.. When I did the enlarged photo, the focal reminded me of a Monet painting of his gardens. Gorgeou work!

Oh you gals! (blushing) !! I am very flattered, and thank you for the praise. I was just playing around, trying to “fix a mistake” basically, when I first did this technique. Now I am trying different textures (using different center punches for example), to see what I get. :)

I didn’t get to comment on this yesterday…dogs being bad issues. Anyway I’m glad I’m commenting after Nancy because she’s right. The focal does look like that painting. I have really got to learn hammering stuff if you get these results.
