Storm at Sea

About this design:

One box I inherited from my friend Nancy was marked "Blue Pietersite". Inside, I found this fabulous stone already glued to brown felt, plus a box of mixed beads, silver-blue fw pearls, and what looked to me like other projects. I tried to imagine what she'd had in mind for the items she grouped together. This is what I came up with.

Components:

Pietersite focal with natural opalescent shimmer (the colors seem to move like waves when you shift the stone to catch light differently), glass beads, freshwater pearls, gunmetal chain and clasp

Gorgeous Laud! That focal looks stunning! Is that St. Petersburg stitch?

    Laud says:

No, it’s a plain spiral weave. I took some pictures showing it neatly laid out with the beads perfectly organized (all the transparent squares along the outside edges), but of course, the pictures didn’t come out so I got frustrated and just took ones with the beads jumbled….

LOVE that St. Petersburg stitch–I’ll have to learn it.

Wow I don’t even know what to say. The focal is just beautiful. I know that it holds a special meaning for you and working on it was probably emotional. Your necklace is so lovely. I’m sure she would approve.

Thank you all! This is the first piece I made with the stitched-on beadwork. After years of embroidery, the stitching wasn’t hard, but I learned that the backing fabric and side parts of the design have to be wide to support the weight of stone focals. Oh, and I learned that it helps to check each bead to make sure it’s perfectly formed (didn’t do that and so got some uneven places…). I think I’m ready to attempt one of those embroidered cuffs. Wish me luck!

Fabulous work! I think you did your friend proud! THat is the bluest chunk of blue Pietersite I have ever seen! What a fantastic gift from your friend.

    Laud says:

I started wondering if I’d gotten the name wrong, but I googled it and found other very blue stones. There are lots of colors, ranging from yellows to reds to brown/blacks to blues. Oh, and I learned a new word: chatoyancy, which means “an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones” (Wiki). Pietersite is a type of tiger eye found only in Namibia and China.

  17. puppychick labratbecky
    puppychick labratbecky says:

Thanks for the lesson! I had heard chatoyancy in regards to cat’s eye quartz and Seraphinite. It must be when minerals line up a certain way inside the stones. Again, this is absolutely beautiful! Wear it in remembrance and you will feel her with you. xoxo

Laud, this piece is truly beautiful. The focal bead is fantastic. If you use ultra suede as your backing your cab will be much better supported. Hope you do more of this design. It has a definite Wow factor!

  20. Laud
    Laud says:

Nanci, thanks for the tip. I have some ultrasuede and also fabric stabilizers that would be good stiffeners. This focal was already on the felt. I could have added more backings–but I didn’t think of that!
