Jess, I just googled wire wrapping pliers and am intrigued. Can you recommend a size to start with in order to learn to make clasps?

thank you for the gauge ifo. I’ve tried a clasp with 20 ga. and it was too weak so I will try the 18 ga.

do you need to hammer the clasp to work harden? I guess I worry about the metal chipping.

Thanks Becky, Alice, Wanda and Angela! :D

I talked to Gail about the pliers already but if anybody else wants to know…I have two sets of pliers that have 3 barrels each…one set has 5, 7 and 10 mm barrels and the other set has 13, 16 and 20 mm. They are great for wire wrapping and making your own earwires! :D

Peggy3: Your welcome! :) 16 and 18 gauge are both good for clasps…I don’t always hammer it..I guess it just depends on what look you want…I honestly haven’t had any trouble with it chipping…I’m sure anything is possible which is why it’s good to wear eye protection ;) …but generally the wire flattens right out! Hope this helps. :D

Hey Jess and Peggy, I just want to chime in on the issue of work hardening your wire. I always work harden my clasps, jumprings and charms and it’s really simple with no chipping issues. You just place the piece between a doubled up paper towel and hit it lightly with a rubber or rawhide mallet 6 to 8 times on both at sides. Don’t hit it hard enough to make dents in your wire. You’ll see that the light hammering will make it so much stronger!

Thanks Angela! :D I am still new to making my own clasps too! :)

This reminds me of my Mother. Holly Jolly Christmas was her favorite song. Every time we hear that song, my daughter and I tear up. She wasn’t much of a jewelry person, but I know she would love this!

The name Holly also reminds me of my beloved Dad. He wanted to name me Holly since I was born in December. Thank god he didn’t because my last name starts with Ho… lol

  28. Gail Layne
    Gail Layne says:

    Peggy,
Me too! I was also born in December and my dad wanted to name me Holly. Can you imagine “Holly Layne” ? I’d have to continuously explain that it really was my name and not my address!

    SweetBirchDesigns says:

Thanks Deborah, Gramnan and Judy! :D

Peggy and Gail, you all are too funny! I am glad so many sentimental memories can be shared! :D Thanks for the smiles and the great memories!
I have to say though that Holly Layne does have a certain ring to it! ;) It just sounds so Christmasy!
