Snow Queen

About this design:

I always loved the image of the Snow Queen--someone who thrived on cold. There are a few snow women in mythology, too. The necklace is right for them all.

Components:

Rock crystal, frosted/crackled quartz, opalite glass diamonds, crystal rondelles and bicones, seed beads, gold-plated clasp

Laud, I can just see her wearing this! Love the ‘icicles’ – another beautiful design. The seed beeds, bicones and rondelles add a nice touch of color. Your necklaces are always so nice!Is this one about 22 inches long?

Lovely, lovely icicles! I would have put silver with this but I LOVE the gold!! Who knew?? :) You have such a great eye for this, Laud! You do combinations the rest of us don’t even dream of. :)

    Stunning!!!

  8. Laud
    Laud says:

Becky, I thought silver made an icy pick too chilly, and wouldn’t a queen expect gold? Didn’t want too much gold, so the crystals are all Picasso finish except for the tiny light topaz bicones. I did wonder if I should use pearls?

  9. puppychick labratbecky
    puppychick labratbecky says:

    I think this is PERFECT!!!

  10. puppychick labratbecky
    puppychick labratbecky says:

I meant, if I was beginning a design with the quartz, gold wouldn’t even have crossed my mind but it works perfectly here. That is how your eye for color works. I don’t have that skill. :)

  11. Laud
    Laud says:

Sure you do. You’d have seen that the design was lacked punch. Question: Do you think I should replace the central crystals with 1) the same gold beads as in other places, or 2) very small gold ones so the icicles hang together tighter? I just don’t know.

  12. puppychick labratbecky
    puppychick labratbecky says:

I like how the spikes are splayed by the crystals. I think it looks good as is but if you want to try gold, use the bigger ones so you get the feeling of spikes. The Queen did have a frozen heart. :)

  13. Laud
    Laud says:

You’re right: spikes it is. I was thinking the icicles might look more icy if they were closer, but spikes have drama. Good call.

I made a bracelet that would go perfect with this…sold it to a lady in Australia. Really a lovely piece.

  16. Gail Layne
    Gail Layne says:

Nooooo! Don’t replace anything please! The spikes look awesome spaced as they are, more like icicles found in nature. The crystals between the spikes give a sense of sunlight on the ice, gold beads wouldn’t have that impact. Just my opinion of course, but this is a stunner as is!

Oooh! I tried something similar — lots of icy stones — a couple of years back, but it ended up all blah, so I took it apart and decided it wasn’t doable. This is really good! I’ve got a feeling you would get trouble with how it falls if you put the sticks together, they would stick to each other and get all stiff and cranky, sort of? Earrings, definitely! Straight, simple stick-shape?

  23. Lois D
    Lois D says:

Yes, on the earrings and bracelet. I agree with Monica on keeping the earrings straight and simple. Mirror the icicles.
Would love to see a bracelet. I picture a cuff style, or even a multi-strand with an equally icy look to it!

    Lois D says:

PS I agree with Gail. Don’t change a thing!

Laud, this is FABULOUS! I must say I saw the picture and wasn’t looking at the name and as soon as I saw the picture I was like, “Wow this reminds me of the Snow Queen in the Narnia book.” This is absolutely perfect, PERFECT! WOW…I am at a loss for words! It is amazing! :D

You took the thoughts right out of my head Jess!!
Fabulous icy coolness Laud! Nothing needs to be changed. And yes earrings would look lovely, nice icicles hanging from your ears.

  28. Julie Shane
    Julie Shane says:

Yes! What Jess said… this is SO Narnia.
I like the little bit of gold within the silver and white. Good contrast. It’s both BOLD and subtle.

As always Laud… this has YOU written all over it!!! :)

Gorgeous! The touch of gold does bring it to life. Reminds me of late-afternoon golden sunlight on snow & ice…
    Definitely make earrings.
Last year (or the year before?) I bought some tiny white coral branchlets, and a bunch of white/moonstone/clear tiny beads, intending to make a Snow Queen piece… maybe this will kick me into action…
