Metamorphosis

About this design:

This brooch (fibula) is a response to a class challenge. We had to turn a brass bullet casing into a piece of jewelry. After discarding several ideas, I decided to try etching the casing using the ferric chloride technique…worked great!
Make jewelry…Not war!

Components:

brass wire, picasso finish Czech beads, quartzite shard

Wow…incredible work! If you gave me a bullet casing to make into jewelry, I’d still be sitting looking at it next month! Amazing creativity!

I saw some “bullet” jewelry on Etsy once, but it was not near as cute as this little bug! Great job with the etching.

    Love, LOVE it!

Can you tell me how is the stone fixed into the casing? I’ve got a few casings that have been waiting to be used in jewelry.

    Thank you Lynda.
But what I meant was, did you glue the stone in the casing or how did you affix it?
    Thanks!

    Fresh Baked says:

Hi Mary…boy did I get that wrong!! Thanks for correcting it. The shard is a briolette type stone, so I wired it and pushed both ends up through a hole we drilled in the top on the casing. Those two little antennae are the ends of the wire. Gluing would certainly have been easier, but the teacher said gluing was ‘cheating’ in this challenge.

    Fantastic work!
I’ve been hanging onto some stick pearls that I think would fit nicely into bullet casings… call them my ‘ammo pearls’…. but have done nothing.
