Struttin'

Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick says…

I really love the peacock pearls and wanted to make something dramatic. I'm just afraid that the 3-strands with bali and ss is too rich for my clientele, so I might break it into 3 separate pieces.

Components:

peacock fwp, czech glass in two sizes, bali silver beads, sterling silver

    Thank you, Lorrie!
I displayed it at school this week and a few people are interested in it, but the price is scaring them. I’m in a quandry.

I hear that! Sometimes it is a very hard decision! If I just love the piece the way it is, I often tell myself the right person will come along!
If, on the other hand, I want to buy beads ;) I might decide to alter so that it is priced to sell…

I hear YOU loud and clear, Lorrie. I just might hang in a bit longer as is. I only displayed it once. I’ve got plenty of other things to sell for bead money. Trying to work off current stock, but a colleague wants a bracelet with turtle beads, so I just had to order last night. LOL

I can just whip up a few single strands for the weak of heart and wallet. ;)

This is a beautiful piece of art. Where are you marketing your work? Maybe you need to find a more sophisticated clientele. Try finding a local boutique with those over-priced jeans, bags, and jewels, and ask them if they would take your work on consignment. Label your pieces as “one of a kind” and leave a stack of pamphlets telling about you, your work, and some pics. Tell potential buyers that you can custom make anything just for them. They pick the stones, colors, etc. etc.

You have a lovely sense of design. On a piece like this, I would use nothing but sterling silver. Yes, it ups the price, but buyers for something like this know the difference and are willing to pay for quality.

What is your pricing? In my market, this would go for $85 – $100.

I have another question, Jeanne. What are you using to photograph your work. My Cannon SureShot just isn’t cutting it. My pics always look out of focus and there’s always a glare, with or w/o flash.

Can you give me some photo pointers, please?

You ladies are going to make me blush!

Bev – you are so sweet! I’m using a Sony cyber-shot. mine’s last year’s model dsc-T77. We have a favorite sales person at pc richard’s who discounts our purchases.

I try to shoot as much as I can in natural light. But this one may have had flash as it is indoors in my living room.

The camera does have a close-up setting which I often use for earrings and close-ups of a focal piece.

You’re right, Bev, this should go for at least $85, but I only priced it at $75. I’ve only brought it into work so far. And I know from experience that my colleagues usually don’t like to spend more than $50.
The local bead shop keeps telling me to bring things in for consignment. One of these days i’m going to take her up on it.

Hi Anita -good to see you!

    Dragons Chicky says:

I too agree with everyone! :) Not only is the design exquisite but the workmanship is beyond reproach!! The problem with consignment is the consignor usually takes a huge % for selling the item but maybe you can “make a deal” ;D . Your designs deserve the very best!!

  24. RubberT aka Plucky Chick
    RubberT aka Plucky Chick says:

Here’s my 2 cents: I think you should leave it as it is and add a matching three strand bracelet!!

  25. Bev aka Lyric Chick
    Bev aka Lyric Chick says:

Jeanne–tell your colleagues you’d be happy to make them a necklace for $50…out of pony beads!!!! LOL

Don’t sell yourself short. You’re much better than that.

  26. Bev aka Lyric Chick
    Bev aka Lyric Chick says:

Yeah, you take a hickie on consignment at first, but it’s a very good way to get name recognition. After you get that established, you begin to run holiday specials in the local newspaper and start making the regional art shows (stay away from “craft”…anyone can do crafts…you are a jewelry designer…an artEEEst). Pay particular attention to your “branding”. Find a logo and typography that says “you” and stick with it. Give this considerable attention…you want the public to recognize the same way they know Apple, Coke, BMW, Tiffany’s, etc. (OK maybe Tiffany’s is a little over the top, but you get the idea.) :)

    Fluffy Chick aka Faith says:

This necklace is stunning. The shop in St. Augustine Fl where my husband bought my pink opal would be selling this for a lot more than $75 or $80. I agree, do not tear it apart. If someone really likes it they will be willing to start higher and work down. Offer 10% off for seniors, but allow for it in your pricing. Check out the better retail stores for simple strands of pearls. I think you’ll find a buyer. Patience, hang in there. It is a work of art. Keep em coming. How about Ebay? New to this so I don’t know all your options. The make fewer strands or fewer beads a little chain or what ever to keep your cost down. Go for it 32 years of selling, can you tell. LOL

  28. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Jeanne, this just Right as is. It really is time for you to consider other venues, if you can’t sell something this gorgeous at a fair price. Another idea, maybe this one is a “keeper”. Sometimes we are our own best walking advertisements for what we can create. I have 2 orders for simple rings that people have seen me wearing. I am keeping the original–already my size, and making more to sell, and gave 2 as gifts. :D

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and thoughts. I’ve only displayed it once so I’m not giving up on it yet. Not to worry, though, I will not take it apart. And I definitely will wear it.
It cracks me up when people see a piece displayed and ask – “don’t you have one just like this?” Um, yeah – this is it – LOL
