Wedding cake for Sylvia & Mike


About this design:

I began taking cake decorating classes in March 2010, as a creative outlet (in addition to beading.) A frenzy of baking ensued! A friend of mine (and one of my "tasters") liked my cakes so much that she recommended me as a baker to her daughter's best friend, Sylvia, who was getting married in September 2010. Sylvia hired me to make her cake - she told me that guests said that the cake was the best they'd ever tasted! She was thrilled with it, and has recommended me to others - several of whom have ordered special occasion cakes as well.

Components:

Four tier wedding cake covered with ivory fondant, cranberry ribbon, fondant pearls and gilded fondant leaves with a topper of matte silver initials. Bottom tier was a Kentucky browned butter cake with caramel Swiss meringue buttercream, second tier was chocolate cake with mocha Swiss meringue buttercream, top two tiers were dark chocolate cake with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream.

    Thanks for all the kind comments! I have a new batch of baking projects coming up – a Captain America cake for my soon-to-be 5 year old son this weekend, and a two-tier Kentucky Derby themed cake next weekend. The Derby cake design is set – now I just have to figure out how to make a fondant Captain America figure!

    Yes – I started in March 2010, and my first cake (for sale) was in September 2010! It was a bit gutsy of me to take on this project (for which I was well paid), but I wouldn’t have done it if I thought I couldn’t handle it. I made sure I did LOTS of practice cakes – I was making 3-5 cakes a month before I did this one, so I had the opportunity to perfect my technique. The bride was thrilled – and so was I when I heard that she was happy!
