“AKUMAL~Place of the Turtle”

Description from Deb Harding: When I went to Mexico this is the little town I stayed in. Its about 70 miles south of Cancun (thank heavens). It is a small beach front tourist community with hotels, cottages, houses, condos. A beautiful white sugar sand beach where you can snorkel. About a mile north is Ya Kul Lagoon an absolutely amazing snorkeling site, saw my first barracuda (teeth!!!!). So many fish, clear water. YOU CANNOT WEAR SUNTAN LOTION THERE! Because of the ingredients in suntan products lots of snorkeling sites/water parks prohibit the use. Great restuarants serving fresh seafood and mayan inspired dishes. Loved the Super Chomack grocery, fresh baked pastries every morning. Almost everyday I had this thing that was sugared on the outside and had some sweet cheese and ham!!!(yes ham) inside. Awesome!!

Oh Terri you should go. Its not that expensive in that area. There are houses you can rent so you can go in with several families. I stayed in half a little concrete block cottage. All kinds of birds were outside.the window every morning. Its so untouristy in ways. The little town is where all the people that work live and everyone was nice. I was in Cancun for all of 4 hours (after getting off the plane) & hated every minute of it). Its not far from Tulum, GORGEOUS!!

Forgot to say in description that there is a coral barrier reef here, I think the 2nd largest. The town is home to a scuba diving school. The beaches here are turtle sanctuaries. There is also an artist community. Xcaret an ecological water park is about 30 miles north and amazing. Tulum is south, also Xel Ha (another ecological water park), & Coba’s archeological site is west of Tulum. Chichen Itza is west of Cancun but worth a day trip.

This sounds like a vacation I’d love, except for one thing. Is there wifi?(Yes, I’m addicted.) I love turtle picks because turtles/tortoises are my totem animal. They teach us that while protecting oneself is good and necessary, you don’t get anyplace without sticking your neck out. Lovely, lovely pick.

LOL that’s a good philosophy MKK.
They probably have wifi. When I went there, 8 years ago, wasn’t wifi. Its just one of those places you never forget.

Thanks for all the fantastic tips!! Hubby and I will definitely put this on our bucket list!! I extracted a promise for a beachy vacation a few months ago and now I know where to use that. :) And your pick really fires up the imagination for this glorious place!

Sounds like a great place, my motto for vacation is- no phones or computers so I would be happy by just looking at the turtles , great pick, Deb :D

Deb, your pick is amazing — great colors & love those turtles! Your vacation sounds fabulous! The only problem I’d have is the “no sunscreen” rule. I look like Snow White & have to wear SPF 200 — LOL — so I don’t burn. Sigh.

Thanks everybody. I’ve been wanting to do this pick for awhile…I would start it…then delete it.
Lynn you can wear sunscreen…you just cant wear it in the water. So you have to go shower off. I think they also sell safe ones at the ecological water parks. No oils. The guy actually ran his finger down Dan’s (my ex) arm & told him to go shower. LOL

Oops — I misunderstood the “no sunscreen” rule. It makes sense that they wouldn’t want it in the water. Funny story about Dan! LOL

Count me in! Love the no sunscreen rule and the turtle sanctuary. Fortunately there are now garments available which are sunscreens themselves. LLBean sells terrific shirts and trousers as does EMS and REI.
This is a gorgeous aquatic pick Deb! Into my faves immediately!
