“An Understanding”

Description from Beady Little Eyes: The Little Boy and the Old Man by Shel Silverstein

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.

This is such a touching poem, as only Silverstein can write and draw. Love his Where the Sidewalk Ends, but The Giving Tree is my favorite. Your lovely pick portrays your poem perfectly.

Beady, what a lovely pick and bittersweet poem. Sad, but endearingly true. I spoke with a dear friend of mine today. She told me she went to see her sister in a local nursing home this week, and the nursing home had put a chair outside of her sisters room window. They gave her a cell phone and that is how they had their visit. I mean she was not allowed in the building. She literally was outside -they had her sister sitting in the window, so they could see each other. It was a good effort on the nursing homes part to make a bad situation better. But… how sad it is-my heart was just broken for her!

Super pick for this Silverstein poem. His poems teach such great lessons for children and adults alike. The Giving Tree is one of my favorites though.

Robin – sorry to hear about your friend. Guess it’s better to use lots of precaution but still – bring on the vaccine.

Congrats on POD. I missed this one during my time out. Some of Shel’s stuff is great. I did a piece based on one of his children’s books. I love what you posted about The Little Boy and the Old Man–really gives us something to think about. Great pick Beady.

This brought tears to my eyes. My elderly mom is in a nursing home, and I don’t get to see her, too cold to sit outside. I know she feels like no one cares because she doesn’t always understand what’s going on in the outside world. This is a beautiful pick to depict your description.

Thanks all. CzechChick – so sorry to head about your mom. These are such difficult times.
