As we approach Christmas, there are many who are grieving a loss and some might be considering taking their own lives. The hotline for Suicide Prevention is 988. Please share this widely because it just might save a life!

dolllady aka Pam says:Beautiful pick! It does affect way too many families. I can’t understand why some cultures don’t even discuss it to help themselves heal. My brother died by suicide in 1988. It is still hard to understand. He was 34 years old.

Pam, I am so sorry you lost your brother to suicide. Even in our culture we are often afraid to discuss suicide. I suffered from severe depression when I was younger and 37+ years ago I attempted suicide. Thankfully, I was unsuccessful, and after 3 days in ICU and 3 weeks in the hospital I was able to go home to my two young children. Since then I have been a staunch advocate for the mentally
ill and do all I can to let people know that there is help for those who are feeling desperate. Let’s spread the word about the 988 hotline for suicide prevention.

I am so relieved that you came safely through your ordeal and are willing to share your story. Earlier this year our local telephone provider joined the 988 system.
Why is there such an onus on discussing depression? I take an antidepressant every day and have for a few decades. I consider it my “insulin”.

dolllady aka Pam says:Suicide is a greater problem than many people realize. I worked for 12 1/2 years. It is surprising the number of patients we cared for who had attempted suicide and the variety of ages. There was a young man in his early 20′s who had tried and basically would ask people who were regular workers on his safe that after several years could not remember there names of seeing them before. Right after I left our children’s unit a 12 year old hung himself over the door in his bedroom. I blame a lot of it to people who shush family members from taking about it and the constant need to work every waking moment.
